When you gently close your eyes and say goodbye to the last rays of sunlight in a day, you are doing something incredibly important—something that will take up approximately one-third of your entire life. Every night, when your eyelids grow heavy and your thoughts begin to drift away, you are not "wasting time." Instead, you are embarking on a magical journey. During this journey, your body is repairing itself, your memories are being consolidated, and your imagination is running free.
This may sound absolutely extraordinary, but sleep—this phenomenon we experience every day yet often overlook—is actually one of the most mysterious common characteristics shared by nearly all living creatures on Earth. From tiny fruit flies to massive blue whales, from octopuses in the deep ocean to migratory birds soaring across the skies, every living organism needs sleep. Scientists are still exploring the mysteries of sleep today, and every new discovery makes us more amazed by the incredible complexity hidden behind this seemingly simple daily behavior.
What Is Sleep? The Scientific Definition of Sleep
From a scientific perspective, sleep is not simply a state of "switching off" consciousness. When a person sleeps, their brain doesn't stop working—instead, it becomes busy in an entirely different way. Sleep is a reversible state of consciousness in which the body's muscles maintain basic tension, although movement is significantly suppressed, and the brain undergoes a series of complex, predictable cyclical activities.
Let's use a metaphor to better understand sleep. Imagine your brain as a bustling city, and you are the mayor of this city. During the day, you, the mayor, need to handle all sorts of matters: going to school, playing, learning new knowledge, communicating with others, making decisions, solving problems... This city is bustling from morning till night with heavy traffic. By evening, the city needs rest and reconstruction—the streets need repair, the power systems need maintenance, schools and shops need organizing. This is when sleep comes into play.
The Two-Way Door of Sleep: A Magical State You Can Wake From Anytime
An important marker that distinguishes sleep from coma or anesthesia is that sleep is "reversible." This means you can be awakened from a sleep state and return to a state of wakefulness. Like a two-way door that can be opened and closed at any time, sleep allows you to quickly regain consciousness when needed.
In contrast, coma is a prolonged, unconscious state from which recovery typically takes much longer and often requires external medical intervention. Anesthesia, on the other hand, is a temporary loss of consciousness induced by medication, usually used during surgical procedures. These states are fundamentally different from natural sleep.
Sleep Is Not Stillness: An Active Brain and Body
Although we appear motionless during sleep, the body is actually engaged in numerous activities internally. In 1953, two young scientists at the University of Chicago in the United States—Eugene Aserinsky and Nathaniel Kleitman—made a groundbreaking discovery. They observed rapid eye movements during sleep for the first time and named it REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement sleep). This discovery completely transformed people's understanding of sleep.
Through sophisticated electroencephalography (EEG) technology, scientists can monitor the electrical activity generated by the brain during sleep. They discovered that after we fall asleep, the brain goes through several different stages, each with its own unique electrical wave patterns. Non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM sleep) is further divided into three stages: the drowsy stage (Stage 1), light sleep stage (Stage 2), and deep sleep stage (Stage 3). During these stages, brain waves gradually slow down, transitioning from beta and alpha waves during wakefulness to theta waves, and finally to delta waves during deep sleep.

How Much of Our Lives Do We Actually Spend Sleeping?
Let's do some interesting calculations. A typical adult needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep per day. If we calculate based on 8 hours per day:
- One year of 365 days × 8 hours = 2,920 hours = 121.7 days
This means we spend approximately one-third of every year sleeping! Continuing the calculation:
- If a person lives to 75: 75 × 121.7 days = 9,127.5 days ≈ 25 years
In your lifetime, approximately 25 years will be spent sleeping. That's equivalent to the time from birth until you finish elementary school! Converting this number into more vivid descriptions: if all the sleep time in a person's life were added together, you could watch approximately 3 million cartoon episodes (at 20 minutes per episode) or listen to 15 million songs.
Sleep Requirements at Different Ages
Interestingly, humans have vastly different sleep requirements at different ages. Sleep scientists have developed guidelines for recommended daily sleep duration at various ages through extensive research:
