Chapter 1: Stepping Through the Door of Ecology
Every morning, when you push open your window, a breath of fresh air greets you. Outside, birds sing happily on the branches, leaves sway gently in the breeze, and the distant sky is bright blue. Have you ever wondered what makes this world so full of life? Why do flowers bloom in spring and leaves turn golden in autumn? Why do geese fly south in autumn and return north in spring? Why can fish only live in water while birds soar freely through the sky?
These questions may seem simple, but they contain the deepest mysteries of nature. And the science that answers these questions is what we will explore together today—Ecology.

What Is Ecology?
The word "Ecology" comes from the Greek language, where "oikos" means "house" or "dwelling," and "logos" means "study" or "science." Therefore, ecology can be literally understood as "the study of the home of living things." But in reality, the meaning of ecology is much richer than this simple explanation.
Simply put, ecology is the science that studies the relationships between living organisms and their surroundings. "Living organisms" here includes all living things—from tiny bacteria to the massive blue whale, from wildflowers by the roadside to towering redwoods. "Surroundings" includes everything around organisms—sunlight, air, water, soil, temperature, and other living things.
Imagine standing at the edge of a forest. In your view, tall trees stand firmly, their roots deeply buried in the soil, absorbing water and minerals. Sunlight filters through the canopy, providing energy for the shrubs and flowers below. A squirrel peeks out from a tree hollow, looks around, then leaps to another tree's branches. A caterpillar slowly crawls across a leaf while a bird prepares to swoop down to catch it. On the ground, fallen leaves pile up layer upon layer, and fungi quietly decompose dead branches and leaves, returning nutrients to the soil.
In this seemingly peaceful scene, countless complex and wonderful interactions are actually taking place. Every tree, every animal, every small blade of grass is continuously exchanging information and materials with other living things and non-living factors. The ecologist's task is to understand these seemingly ordinary yet profound stories of nature.

The History of Ecology: From Haeckel to Modern Times
Ernst Haeckel and the Birth of "Ecology"
When discussing the history of ecology, we must recognize an important scientist—Ernst Haeckel (1834—1919). This German biologist was a devoted supporter and enthusiastic advocate of Darwin's theory of evolution, and it was he who first formally used the word "Ecology" in 1866.
Haeckel had keen observation skills and a deep love for the natural world. He was not only an outstanding scientist but also a talented artist. His book "Kunstformen der Natur" (Art Forms in Nature) contains numerous exquisite biological illustrations, still regarded as a classic combination of science and art today. In these illustrations, we can clearly see his admiration for the beauty of life forms and his deep thinking about the complex relationships in the living world.
Haeckel defined ecology as "the science of the total relations of the organism to the entire external environment." He believed that organisms and the environment were an inseparable whole, and no organism could exist independently of its environment. This viewpoint was highly forward-thinking at the time and laid an important ideological foundation for the development of modern ecology.
Ecology in China: Ancient Wisdom
However, if we think that ecology is merely a Western modern science, we are greatly mistaken. In fact, China's thousands of years of traditional culture contain rich ecological thinking, which coincides with Western science and even goes deeper in some aspects.
(Harmony between Heaven and Humans) is one of the core ideas of ancient Chinese philosophy. This thought holds that humans and nature are interconnected and interdependent; humans are not the masters of nature but part of it. As early as the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods over two thousand years ago, philosophers began contemplating the relationship between humans and nature.
Laozi, a representative figure of Taoist thought, said: "Humans follow the laws of the earth, the earth follows the laws of heaven, heaven follows the laws of the Tao, and the Tao follows its own nature." This means that the natural world has objective laws that exist regardless of human will, and humans should follow these laws rather than try to conquer or change them.
Zhuangzi, another Taoist representative, used many vivid parables to explain his ecological ideas. In "Zhuangzi: Autumn Floods," he tells the story of the River God who was full of himself until he reached the North Sea and saw the endless ocean, realizing how small he truly was. This story tells us that humans should remain humble before the vastness of nature.
Confucian thought also contains profound ecological wisdom. Confucius said: "When fishing, do not use a net; when hunting, do not shoot at roosting birds." This reflects the Confucian respect for life and the moderate use of natural resources.
Ancient Chinese agricultural production also fully reflected ecological principles. The "mulberry fish pond" system is a classic ecological agriculture model: farmers plant mulberry trees by fish ponds, silkworms eat mulberry leaves, silkworm droppings feed the fish, and fish pond mud serves as fertilizer for the mulberry trees. This circular utilization model maximizes resource use and minimizes waste, still being referenced by ecological agriculture worldwide.
The Development of Modern Ecology
Entering the 20th century, ecology entered a period of rapid development. Scientists no longer relied solely on observation and description but began using more precise
