Welcome to the World of Robots
Have you ever wondered what happens while you're sleeping? When you wake up in the morning and stretch, there are actually many "special friends" already working hard around you! Some are sweeping the kitchen floor for mom, others are assembling cars in factories, and some are even helping doctors perform precise surgeries. These "special friends" all have a special name — Robots!
You might think robots look like humans, right? Some robots do have heads, arms, and legs, looking like superheroes from sci-fi movies. But many robots look nothing like humans at all! Robot vacuum cleaners are round and flat, like big discs; factory robot arms are long with multiple joints, like giant metal arms; and some robots are so tiny you need a microscope to see them. No matter what shape robots take, they all share the same essence — they are machines that can perform tasks automatically, sense the world around them, and "think" and "make decisions" like our brains do.
In this chapter, we'll embark on an adventure into the world of robots. We'll meet various types of robots and learn how they work. Most importantly, we'll discover the three pillars of robotics — Perception, Planning, and Control. These three pillars are like "three heroes" inside a robot's body — each one is essential, and together they make robots smart and capable!
| What Is a Robot?
Let's start with the most fundamental question: What exactly is a robot?
A robot is a special kind of machine that can perform tasks automatically and sense its environment, responding to changes around it. Simply put, a robot is a machine with "eyes" to see, a "brain" to think, and "hands and feet" to act.
You might say, "That sounds similar to regular machines! TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines are also machines that help us, but they're not robots. Why not?"
The key difference is autonomy. Regular machines need you to tell them exactly what to do step by step — which button to press, which mode to set. But robots are different! They can "think" for themselves and decide what to do next based on what they see. Just like you! When you wake up in the morning, you don't need someone to tell you "open your eyes now" or "put on your clothes." You make decisions and act based on the situation. Robots work the same way — they have "eyes" to see the world, a "brain" to make decisions, and a "body" to take action.
Let's define robots in more technical terms: A robot is an automated machine capable of sensing, planning, and acting. These three words — sensing, planning, and acting — are the three core concepts of robotics, and we'll encounter them again and again throughout this book.
A Robot's "Body" and "Brain"
A complete robot is like a superhero with its own "superpower equipment." Let's imagine the parts of a robot as a superhero team:
The robot's perception system is like our eyes, ears, nose, and skin. It includes various sensors that let robots "see" objects around them, "hear" sounds, and "feel" temperature and pressure.

The control system is like a robot's brain and nervous system. It receives information from the perception system, processes this information, and then sends commands to make the robot's parts work.
The actuation system includes motors, hydraulic devices, and pneumatic devices that make a robot's wheels turn, arms bend, and fingers grab objects.

Five Key Characteristics of Robots
After long research, scientists and engineers have identified five key characteristics of robots. Remember these five, and you'll be able to easily tell whether a machine is a robot:
1. Sense — Ability to perceive the environment and acquire information 2. Plan — Ability to think and decide what to do next 3. Act — Ability to perform actions and change the world 4. Autonomy — Ability to work independently without constant human supervision 5. Programmability — Ability to perform different tasks based on different programs
If something meets all five of these characteristics, it's a robot! If it only has a few, it might just be a regular machine or tool.
Exploring the Colorful World of Robots
The world of robots is far more wonderful than you might imagine! From your living room to outer space, robots are busy working everywhere. Let's explore together!
Service robots are the type closest to our daily lives. They provide services in our daily lives and work, helping us complete various tasks.
(Robot Vacuum Cleaners)
Do you have a round, flat little device at home that moves around on the floor by itself? That's a robot vacuum cleaner! It's one of the most common types of service robots.
How does a robot vacuum cleaner work? It has a secret weapon — Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging). Lidar is like magical eyes that shoot invisible laser beams in all directions, then measures how long it takes for the laser to bounce back. This way, it can "see" where the walls, furniture, and obstacles are. The robot vacuum uses this information to draw a "map" of the room, then cleverly plans a cleaning route to clean every corner!

(Food Delivery Robots)
Have you seen a short, round robot carrying plates around in a restaurant? It can avoid people walking by itself and deliver d
