What Is Negotiation? Way More Fun Than You Think!

A Story About Swings
On a sunny autumn afternoon, Xiao Ming rushed excitedly to the swing set in the park. He loved swinging more than anything. That feeling of flying up and down made him feel like a little bird soaring through the sky.
But when he reached the swing set, he found a little girl already sitting on the swing. She was happily swinging, her braids dancing in the wind, her laughter ringing clear and sweet.
Xiao Ming stood there, watching the swing longingly. He really wanted to swing! But the little girl looked so happy, and he felt awkward asking her to give it up.
“Xiaohong, can I have a turn on the swing?” Xiao Ming gathered his courage and asked.
Xiaohong turned her head, looked at Xiao Ming, then at her favorite swing. She didn't want to give it up either!
Something strange happened then...
Suddenly, Xiaohong jumped off the swing and said to Xiao Ming: "How about this - I'll swing ten times, then you swing ten times. We take turns. How does that sound?"
Xiao Ming's eyes lit up: "Great! That's a wonderful idea!"
And so, the two little friends happily took turns swinging. After Xiao Ming swung ten times, he politely passed the swing to Xiaohong. After Xiaohong swung ten times, she happily passed it to Xiao Ming. They chatted as they played, their laughter echoing through the park.
Do you know what just happened?
That's right! Xiao Ming and Xiaohong just completed a negotiation!

What Is Negotiation?
You might think: "Wait, is that really a negotiation? I thought negotiation was something grown-ups do, like company bosses sitting in big conference rooms, signing very formal documents!"
Actually, you negotiate every day! Negotiation isn't that mysterious, and it isn't that scary. It's just like what Xiao Ming and Xiaohong did: when two or more people want the same thing, everyone talks together to find a solution that makes everyone happy.
Let's say it in more formal terms:
> Negotiation is a process in which two or more participants communicate, discuss, and bargain to solve a problem or meet their individual needs, ultimately reaching a mutually agreed-upon outcome.
Sounds a bit complicated? Don't worry! Let's look at a few more examples, and you'll understand!

A Little Negotiation at the Library
Imagine that the last copy of your favorite comic book is available. But it's not just you who wants it - your best friend really wants to read it too!
What would you do in this situation?
Option one: You and your friend get into a fight, both saying the book should be theirs. What happens? Everyone loses. Neither of you gets to read the book, and you might even lose a friend.
Option two: You pretend to be generous and let your friend have the book, then go home feeling upset. Although you tolerated it this time, you feel unhappy inside. You might remember this unpleasant feeling every time you see that book.
Option three: You and your friend sit down and talk it through: "How about you read it first for two days, then lend it to me for two days? Or we could read it together, one page at a time?" This is negotiation!
Through negotiation, both of you get to read the book, and your friendship stays intact. Isn't that much better than fighting or making yourself unhappy?

Negotiation Is NOT a War
When many people think of the word "negotiation," images flash through their minds like this: two groups of people facing off tensely, pounding tables and glaring, fighting to the death.
This kind of thinking is completely wrong!
Negotiation is NOT a war. In war, there's always a loser and a winner. The winner is happy, the loser is sad. But you know what? Even winning isn't always a good thing. For example, you might beat your little brother in a fight, but then he cries, Mom scolds you, and you don't feel good inside either.
But in negotiation, we're not pursuing "you lose, I win." Instead, we're pursuing "win-win"!
Win-win means: after everyone discusses together, each person gets something they wanted, and no one feels like they got a bad deal.
The swing story between Xiao Ming and Xiaohong is the perfect example of win-win. Xiao Ming got to swing, Xiaohong got to swing, and both were happy. That's the power of win-win!

Three Golden Rules of Negotiation
Now you know what negotiation is. But how do you do it well? There are three especially important rules, like three keys that open the door to successful negotiation:
Rule One: Stay Calm and Polite
When you have different ideas from someone else, the most important thing is to stay calm. If you start shouting right away, or angrily say "No way! This is how it has to be!", the other person will get angry too, and in the end, nobody can think clearly.
Imagine if Xiao Ming had stomped his foot and yelled when he saw Xiaohong on the swing: "That's my swing! Get down right now!" Xiaohong would have gotten angry too, and the two might have ended up fighting.
But Xiao Ming was smart. He asked politely: "Xiaohong, can I have a turn on the swing?" This sentence made Xiaohong feel respected, so she was willing to respond nicely.
Politeness is the best starting point for negotiation.
Rule Two: Learn to Listen
Negotiation isn't just about stating your own ideas. It's more importantly about understanding others' ideas.
Why didn't Xiaohong want to give up the swing? Because she was in the middle of swinging and having so much fun! If Xiao Ming had only thought about himself, he would never have understood this. But Xiao Ming thoughtfully considered: "She's playing and doesn't want to stop. That's understandable!" Because of this understanding, Xiaohong was willing to suggest taking turns.
Good listeners become negotiation masters.
Rule Three: Find Common Ground
Successful negotiations are often built on common ground. What
