Opening: The Overlooked "Second Brain" – Your Gut Is Smarter Than You Think
If you’ve ever been struck by sudden abdominal cramps before a big interview and rushed to the restroom, or had a gut feeling that a job offer just wasn’t right for you, don’t blame your weak psychological resilience first — your gut may have perceived the stress before you even did, and it might even be smarter than you think.
This long-standing mainstream view of the gut as nothing more than a "sewer" responsible for digesting food and expelling waste, or at most a low-tech "processing plant", has been completely overturned by neuroscience and microbiology research over the past 40 years: our gut has an independent neural regulatory system, housing about 500 million neurons, 5 times more than the number of neurons in the spinal cord. It can not only independently complete basic functions such as peristalsis, secretion, and digestion and absorption, but also communicate bidirectionally with the brain through complex signaling pathways, directly affecting our emotions, cognition, and even decision-making. The term "Second Brain" was first proposed by neuroanatomists in the 19th century, and it was not until the concept of the Gut-Brain Axis (GBA) was put forward in the 1990s that this statement changed from an academic speculation to a widely verified scientific fact. The so-called gut-brain axis is a two-way signal network connecting the gut and the brain, covering three major pathways: neural, endocrine, and immune. Any signal change at one end will be transmitted to the other end immediately.
> 💡 Sidebar: Independence of the Enteric Nervous System > As early as the 19th century, neuroanatomist Leigh discovered that even if the vagus nerve connecting the gut and the brain is cut, the gut can still complete basic functions such as peristalsis and digestion normally. This proves that the enteric nervous system (ENS) has regulatory ability independent of the brain, which is also one of the core reasons why it is called the "second brain".
If the enteric nervous system is the "hardware" of the second brain, then the gut microbiota is its "think tank". There is a huge "microbial kingdom" in your gut: with a total number of about 10 trillion, roughly equal to the number of human body cells, it contains about 1,000 species and more than 4,000 strains of different microorganisms. The total number of genes is more than 100 times that of humans, which means you have an independent "microbial genome" living, metabolizing, and even affecting your health with you. Many people think of "gut bacteria" as pathogenic bacteria and infections as soon as they hear them, which is the biggest cognitive misunderstanding: the gut microbiota is a complex symbiotic ecosystem, like a tropical rainforest, which requires diversity to remain stable. Beneficial bacteria (such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus) and neutral bacteria occupy an absolute advantage, and harmful bacteria account for less than 1%. Only when the microbiota is out of balance and beneficial bacteria are greatly reduced, can harmful bacteria take the opportunity to reproduce and cause diseases. The "smartness" of gut microorganisms is reflected in all aspects: they can synthesize vitamin K and B vitamins that the human body cannot synthesize on its own, and help the human body absorb minerals such as calcium and iron; they can metabolize dietary fiber that the human body cannot digest, and produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are not only the main energy source of intestinal cells, but also can cross the blood-brain barrier, regulate the inflammatory response of the brain, and improve mood and cognition. Studies have found that SCFAs produced by the gut microbiota can promote the generation of neurons in the hippocampus (the brain region responsible for memory and learning), improve memory, and reduce anxiety and depressive behaviors. What is even more amazing is that 90% of the body's serotonin (often called the "happy hormone") is synthesized in the gut, and less than 10% of serotonin in the brain. Gut microbiota can directly regulate the synthesis level of serotonin, which directly explains why people with gut microbiota disorders are more likely to have emotional problems: for example, more than 60% of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have symptoms of anxiety and depression, and after adjusting the gut microbiota, not only the intestinal symptoms are relieved, but also the emotional problems are significantly improved.
The first typical case is the clinical treatment breakthrough of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is a typical disease caused by gut-brain axis dysfunction: patients often suffer from abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, or alternating diarrhea and constipation, but no organic problems can be found in the hospital, so many people are mistakenly considered to have "psychological problems" and have taken a lot of antidepressants without effect. A milestone study published in *Cell* in 2019 found that after fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from healthy donors, more than 60% of IBS patients had significant relief in abdominal pain and diarrhea symptoms within 3 months, and their anxiety scores decreased by an average of 40% — this shows that adjusting the gut microbiota can not only improve intestinal symptoms, but also directly affect the emotional state of the brain[^1]. The second typical case comes from research on autism spectrum disorder (ASD). About 70% of children with autism have serious gastrointestinal problems, such as chronic constipation, diarrhea, and bloating.
If you’ve ever had “diarrhea when you’re nervous”, “no appetite when you’re in a bad mood”, or “felt down and menta
