The Call of Numbers: Origins and Mission of Life Code Science
In the dawn of human civilization, when the first glimmer of intellect pierced through the mists of chaos, our ancestors looked up at the starry firmament and down upon the earth, beginning to追问 an eternal question: Does this world follow some hidden order? Do the recurring phases of the moon, the changing seasons, and the cycles of sun and moon speak of some profound language? And is human destiny itself—those joys and sorrows, rises and falls—woven by some force beyond human will?
These inquiries, like seeds, sprouted in the soils of diverse civilizations, ultimately blooming into one of the most magnificent flowers of human intellectual history—the exploration of the mystical power of numbers. Numerology, or the study of life codes, as a discipline exploring the deep connections between numbers and human destiny, personality traits, and even cosmic laws, has its roots deeply embedded in thousands of years of human spiritual soil.
The opening of this book invites readers on an extraordinary journey across time and space. We shall depart from ancient Greece in the sixth century BCE, listening to how Pythagoras discovered the ultimate truth of the universe in the harmony of numbers; we shall traverse the ancient banks of the Euphrates and the Nile, exploring how Babylonian priests and Egyptian sages used numbers to predict harvests and divine fortunes; we shall enter the secret chambers of Hebrew mysticism, touching how Kabbalistic scholars transformed letters into numbers, weaving keys to interpret sacred texts; we shall also pass through the hidden workshops of medieval alchemists, witnessing how numbers played central roles in the mysteries of metal transmutation; finally, we shall arrive at the modern spiritualist movements from the Victorian era onward, observing how numerology found its place between the dawn of science and the revival of spirituality, gradually evolving into the systematic body of knowledge we see today.
This is a pilgrimage about numbers, and also a tribute to the courage of human intellect. At the end of this journey, we shall understand a fundamental truth: numbers have never been merely abstract symbols created by humans—they are cosmic invitations addressed to each individual, bridges leading to self-knowledge and cosmic truth.

I. Pythagorean Metaphysics of Numbers
When we attempt to trace the origins of number mysticism, it is difficult to find an earlier or more influential figure than the ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras of Samos (c. 570 BCE – c. 495 BCE). Although the exact historical records of Pythagoras's life remain a focal point of scholarly debate— ancient biographers often mythologized him, making the boundaries between the real and the legendary Pythagoras blurry— there is no doubt that the Pythagorean school he founded exerted profound and lasting influence on Western intellectual history, most notably in their systematic exposition of number metaphysics.
Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos off the eastern Aegean coast. According to tradition, he traveled extensively in his youth—possibly to Egypt, Babylon, and perhaps even India—absorbing the mathematical, philosophical, and mystical knowledge of these ancient lands. Around 530 BCE, he settled in Croton, a Greek colony in southern Italy, and established there a semi-religious, semi-philosophical secret society. This society not only studied mathematics but also practiced a strict code of conduct, including vegetarianism, communal living, and adherence to certain rituals and taboos.
(Number is the principle of all things)。
The central doctrine of the Pythagorean school can be summarized in a striking proposition: "All is Number." The meaning of this proposition far exceeds modern people's understanding of numbers. In the view of the Pythagoreans, numbers were not merely tools for measurement and calculation—they were the fundamental principles of Being, the basis of cosmic order, and the essence of all things. As Aristotle recorded in the *Metaphysics*, the Pythagoreans held that "number is the principle of all things."
This belief was not mere speculation but was grounded in their profound observations of music and geometry. The Pythagoreans discovered that when a taut string is divided at specific ratios, it produces harmonious musical intervals. For instance, a ratio of 2:1 produces an octave; 3:2 produces a perfect fifth; 4:3 produces a perfect fourth. These simple integer ratios—what they called *harmoniai* (concordances)—corresponded precisely to the most pleasing sounds in music. The Pythagoreans regarded this discovery as mathematical proof of cosmic harmony: if musical harmony can be reduced to numerical ratios, then cosmic harmony must also be built upon the same numerical foundation.
In Pythagorean number metaphysics, the most fundamental distinction was between odd and even numbers. Even numbers were viewed as divisible, feminine, incomplete, and fallen; odd numbers were considered indivisible, masculine, complete, and uplifting. This binary doctrine of numbers profoundly influenced subsequent Western mystical traditions. The number one (1) was regarded as the source of all things, the starting point and unity of everything; the number two represented the principle of division and difference; the number three represented completeness, being the union of the first odd (masculine) number and the first even (feminine) number; the number four symbolized justice and order, as it was the square of the first even number, representing stability and equilibrium.
(By that pure and holy four-lettered name on high)。
However, in the eyes of the Pythagoreans, the most sacred number was ten (10). Ten was the sum of 1+2+3+4—the sum of the first four natural numbers—called the Tetractys, and was regarded as a symbol of cosmic harmony and divine completeness. The Pythagoreans harbored near-r
