The Carnian Pluvial Event: Dawn of the Triassic
---
Darkness, endless darkness.
Little Star screamed in its nightmare. It saw the sky burning, the earth cracking, the oceans boiling. Countless lives struggled in despair, unable to escape the all-pervading destruction. In the oceans, the mightiest creatures sank to the seafloor, the tiniest plankton reduced to nothing; on land, lush forests turned to ash, great beasts fell on dried-up riverbeds, their final wails echoing into nothingness.
This was no ordinary nightmare. This was an echo from the depths of memory, an ancient alarm inscribed in the genetic code of every living being.
In that era—what geologists call the Late Permian, about 252 million years ago—Earth experienced an unprecedented catastrophe. This "Great Dying," as it came to be known, remains the darkest chapter in Earth's history of life. Scientists still debate what triggered this disaster: Was it the Siberian supervolcano, erupting and releasing endless carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere? Or the sudden massive release of methane hydrates from the ocean floor? Perhaps it was all of these disasters occurring simultaneously,叠加 each other, pushing Earth into the abyss?
Whatever the cause, the results were devastating. In the oceans, 90% of species vanished forever. Those strange creatures that once swam through ancient seas—the agonisids with their spiral shells, the heavily-armored placoderms, the sea lilies crawling along the ocean floor—all became fossils, memories that could never be reached again.
The land fared no better. 70% of terrestrial life came to an end. The dense primeval forests turned to scorched earth; those giant ferns and club mosses that had thrived疯狂 in the Carboniferous period three hundred million years earlier became ash in the Permian末大火. Large herbivores found no food, large carnivores found no prey, the entire ecosystem like a wobbly tower of blocks, collapsing at some critical tipping point.
Little Star awoke from the dream, trembling all over. Its claws gripped the rough rock floor, its eyes searched the darkness for something, finding only shadows in the cave's depths. Those images—burning sky, boiling oceans, fallen giants—still lingered in its mind, as if it had witnessed the disaster firsthand, even though it was merely a young dinosaur, born into a world just awakening from the ruins.
Outside the cave, night was retreating. A sliver of faint dawn light seeped from the east, dyeing the distant horizon red. Little Star carefully poked its head out of the cave, breathing the morning's damp air. Its name was "Little Star"—in its clan, this name meant "the brightest star before dawn." Its mother had given it this name at dawn on the day it was born, hoping it would be like a star, able to find its own light after any prolonged darkness.
Little Star was an Eoraptor. This name means "dawn thief," because the first fossils of this dinosaur were discovered in Argentina's Ischigualasto Valley, the place where sunrise light first touched the earth each morning. The Eoraptor was a very primitive dinosaur, small in size, about one meter long and weighing only ten kilograms or so. Their forelimbs had five fingers capable of grasping, their hind limbs were long and powerful, good for swift running.
In the world after the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, dinosaurs like the Eoraptor were still rare species. The Earth at that time was dominated by another group of creatures—the "pseudosuchians" or "archosaurs." These animals ranged from small to large, some crawling on the ground like today's lizards, while others grew enormous bodies and became the true rulers of that era. The most famous was *Postosuchus*, an animal that could grow over five meters long, with a heavy skull and terrifying jaw power, the most fearsome predator of its time.
The place where Little Star was born was a barren plateau. This had once been the site of giant forests in the Permian, but the flames of the Great Dying turned everything to nothing. Now, the land had only bare rocks, sparse bushes, and occasional ferns. The air carried an indefinable scent—ash, the smell of death, the sprouts of new life.
Little Star's clan was small, only five or six individuals. They had no fixed nest, living a nomadic life, traveling far and wide each day just to survive. Food was scarce, water even scarcer. In this era, dinosaurs were not yet the main characters of Earth; they were merely a small part of countless lives struggling to survive.
But Little Star never gave up hope. Its mother always told it that every dawn was a new beginning, every night had an end. In the darkest moments, seeds of light were always waiting to sprout. Its mother's voice echoed in its ears: "Little Star, remember where we come from. Long, long ago, before the Great Dying, our earliest ancestors already existed. They survived that disaster, passed on life, and here we are today. The same blood flows through us, and we too will survive."
Little Star took a deep breath and completely crawled out of the cave. The morning air was cool and fresh, carrying a hint of earth and ferns. It stood at the cave entrance, gazing at the distant horizon, where a red sun was rising, dyeing the entire plateau golden-red.
Just at that moment, something in the air seemed to change.
A drop of water landed on Little Star's nose. It looked up and saw a cloud slowly drifting from the west. This was common before—during dry seasons, such clouds would occasionally pass by, but they rarely brought rain, at most a few sparse drops.
But this time, the clouds thickened and darkened with each passing moment. The drops grew denser, from one drop to a string, finally merging into a dense curtain of water. Little Star had never seen such a sight—rain pouring from the sky, as if a great hole had opened in the heavens and all the water came pouring down.
Little Star hastily retreated into the
