On August 3, 1492, when Christopher Columbus’s three caravels set sail from Palos de la Frontera in Spain, he could hardly have imagined that their voyage would permanently redraw the boundaries of human civilization. The fleet’s supplies were only enough for 90 days of sailing, and Queen Isabella’s investment of 2 million maravedís in this venture accounted for one-third of the Spanish crown’s annual fiscal revenue at the time — this was the first organized transcontinental voyage in human history, driven as much by greed for spices and the desire to explore the unknown as by the political ambition of the Spanish kingdom to seize global discourse power in the Age of Discovery. Seven hundred and sixty years later, when SpaceX’s Starship prototype rose with orange-red flames from the launch pad at Boca Chica, Texas, the two voyages across time and space formed a striking intertext in narrative logic: both are adventures in which civilization breaks through its original survival boundaries, both are mixed with complex motives of commercial interest, political game and technical idealism, and both face the core challenges of "unreliable survival systems, unpredictable environmental threats, and infeasible long-term adaptation".
The expansion history of human civilization is essentially a history of "boundary expansion": from Homo sapiens walking out of the East African Rift Valley, to agricultural civilization expanding the boundaries of arable land, and then to the Age of Discovery breaking through the continental boundaries. Every breakthrough in boundaries is accompanied by the reconstruction of underlying driving forces and the iteration of technological paradigms. The ocean exploration in the Age of Discovery did not aim at "global colonization" from the beginning. Its initial commercial logic was to bypass the Ottoman Empire’s land route monopoly and directly obtain spices from Southeast Asia, silk from China and cotton from India. The input-output ratio of a single voyage was the core decision-making indicator — Columbus’s second voyage brought 17 ships and 1,200 people, and transported gold and slaves worth 5 years of fiscal revenue of the Spanish crown from the Americas, which truly detonated the colonial wave of the Age of Discovery. This path of "short-term political/commercial goal driven → technical verification → long-term value discovery → large-scale expansion" is highly consistent with the current development logic of space colonization: space exploration during the Cold War was essentially "politically driven". The United States and the Soviet Union invested more than 0.5% of global GDP in space races, with the core goal of proving the superiority of their own systems, rather than establishing sustainable space settlements. Currently, the driving force of space exploration is rapidly shifting to the dual logic of commercial value and civilization survival: Morgan Stanley’s 2023 "Space Economy Report" shows that the global space economy is expected to reach 1.1 trillion US dollars by 2040, of which space transportation, satellite Internet, and space resource exploitation will account for 70% of the share, and the investment growth rate of long-term projects such as near-Earth orbit tourism, lunar research stations and Mars colonization has exceeded 30% for five consecutive years.
The path dependence of the Age of Discovery and the technical selection controversy of space exploration show a high degree of consistency: in the 15th century, Portuguese navigators initially chose to go to India via the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, because they inherited the ship technology and route experience of Mediterranean navigation. It was not until Columbus proposed the "fantastic" route of crossing the Atlantic that the shackles of path dependence were broken. The technical selection of space exploration is also bound by early technical paths: when Kennedy announced in 1961 that the United States would achieve manned moon landing within ten years, NASA launched an 18-month debate on the technical route, with the core disagreement on "whether to adopt reusable launch vehicles". The "heavy rocket faction" represented by Wernher von Braun believed that the maturity of reusable technology was insufficient at that time, and the Saturn V heavy rocket was the most secure choice; while the "reusable faction" represented by supporters of the Space Shuttle project believed that reusable technology was the core to reducing space transportation costs and achieving long-term space stay, and resources should be invested in research and development first. In the end, political demands overwhelmed technical rationality: Kennedy needed a moon landing goal that could be achieved within ten years and could crush the Soviet Union, and the Saturn V scheme could achieve the goal in 1969, while the reusable scheme required at least 20 years of research and development. This decision directly led to the congenital defect of the Apollo program: it was designed for the single political goal of "moon landing", rather than for "long-term space stay" — the life support system of the Apollo spacecraft could only support astronauts to stay on the moon for 48 hours, and there were no modules designed for long-term life support, radiation protection and low-gravity adaptation. The whole program cost 25 billion US dollars (equivalent to 150 billion US dollars in 2024), and was announced to terminate only 3 years after Armstrong set foot on the moon in 1969. The United States has never achieved manned moon landing again in the following 50 years.
This path of "political goal driven → technical verification → project termination" also appeared in the Age of Discovery: after Columbus’s fourth voyage, the Spanish crown stopped funding him because it failed to find the expected gold reserves. It was not until the mid-16th century when Spain discovered large-scale silver mines in the Americas that it restarted large-scale cross-ocean colo
