Opening: A Ordinary Weekend
On a Saturday morning, sunlight filtered through the curtains into the living room. Xiao Ming's father sat at the dining table, holding a supermarket promotional flyer, his brow slightly furrowed. His mother emerged from the kitchen carrying a cup of freshly brewed tea, and the two began discussing today's shopping plans. "Oil prices have gone up—should we buy a few more barrels to stock up?" "The kid's tutoring fees are due next week—is the monthly budget still enough?" "We wanted to take the whole family to the park this weekend, but the gas prices are really making us hesitate..." Such conversations repeat themselves in countless ordinary households.
This seemingly ordinary scene actually contains the essence of all economics. When we examine closely the dilemmas facing Xiao Ming's family, we find that every problem they face—how to meet the family's needs with limited income, how to make choices among various goods and services, how to balance consumption today with saving for tomorrow—is precisely the core question that economics seeks to answer.
Economics is not merely abstract theory about money and markets; it is a discipline that studies how humans make choices. And these choices constitute the entirety of our daily lives.

What Is Economics?
The Definition of Economics
Economics is the social science that studies how human societies utilize limited resources to satisfy unlimited needs in the process of development. This definition, though seemingly simple, contains two of the most fundamental concepts in economics: scarcity of resources and the unlimited nature of human wants.
Let us carefully deconstruct this definition. When we say resources are "limited," we refer to the inputs required for producing various goods and services—land, labor, capital, technological knowledge, and so forth—which, during any given period, are fixed in quantity or grow more slowly than human wants expand. These resources are called "factors of production," and they constitute the material foundation of economic activity. Land provides natural resources and space; labor provides human physical and mental effort; capital consists of man-made resources used to produce other goods and services, such as machinery and buildings; and entrepreneurship is the ability to combine other factors and bear business risks.
At the same time, human wants are "unlimited." Here, "unlimited" does not mean literally uncountable, but rather reflects the nature of wants—the moment one need is satisfied, people quickly generate new, higher-level wants. Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory illustrates this well: when people satisfy basic physiological needs and safety needs, they pursue higher-level social needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Precisely because of this characteristic of wants, humanity is always in a state of "insatiable desire," never reaching a point of complete satisfaction.
Scarcity: The Fundamental Reason for Economics
Scarcity is the cornerstone of the edifice of economics, and the entire theoretical framework of economics is built upon this seemingly simple yet profoundly deep observation. Scarcity's importance lies in the fact that it reveals a reality none of us can escape: our desires far exceed what we can possess.
Consider the following problems we encounter every day: a recent graduate wants to buy a car, but his savings are only enough for the down payment; a young couple wants to purchase a larger house, but their income temporarily cannot support a higher mortgage; an entrepreneur wants to invest in three projects simultaneously, but the company's cash flow can only support one. This gap between "wanting" and "being able" is the concrete manifestation of scarcity.
In economics, scarcity has a special meaning. It does not merely refer to the absolute scarcity of resources, but rather that available resources are always insufficient relative to unlimited human wants. Even the world's wealthiest nations face the困扰 of scarcity. The United States must make difficult choices every year regarding spending on healthcare, education, national defense, and infrastructure; Norway, despite abundant oil revenues, must still find balance between environmental protection and economic development; Japan, a technological powerhouse, must redistribute social resources under the pressure of an aging population.
The Core Questions Economics Studies
Since scarcity is a universal phenomenon in human society, economics as a discipline has the core task of studying how to make optimal choices under conditions of scarcity. Specifically, economics attempts to answer three fundamental questions:
(What to Produce?)
This question addresses which goods and services society should allocate its limited resources to produce. In a market economy, this question is primarily answered by the price mechanism—goods with higher prices and larger profit margins attract more production from enterprises; conversely, those with lower prices and margins see reduced production. However, the formation of prices itself is a complex social process involving multiple factors such as consumer preferences, producer costs, and competitor behavior. In a planned economy, this question is resolved by the government through planning. Regardless of economic system, the decision of "what to produce" is the foremost issue every society must face.
The example of Xiao Ming's family illustrates this well. They must decide over the weekend: should they purchase this week's daily necessities or enroll their child in an interest class? Should they enjoy free leisure time at a nearby park or spend money at an amusement park? This decision of "to buy or not to buy," "to go or not to go," is precisely the "what to produce" decision at the household level.
(How to Produce?)
This question concerns the technologies and methods used to prod
