Imagine this: if you could ride a super-fast horse from the eastern coast of China all the way to a big city in Europe, how long do you think it would take? One month? Half a year? Or maybe a whole year? The answer might surprise you—riding on horseback across the vast lands once ruled by the Mongol Empire would take about two full years! Two years of riding from morning to night without stopping, just to travel from one edge of this enormous empire to the other!
This is the super power we're going to meet today—the Mongol Empire. It wasn't just an ordinary country; it was a gigantic empire stretching across most of Asia and Europe, creating wonders the world had never seen before. Over the next hundred or so pages, we're going to embark on an amazing journey through time to explore this magical world that existed more than 800 years ago.
You might be wondering: "Why should I learn about an empire that existed so long ago?" Great question! Think about it this way—if your grandfather told you that when he was a kid, there were no cell phones, no TVs, no cars, wouldn't you think that was amazing? The same goes for people from over 800 years ago. They didn't have the things we take for granted. But they had their own incredible skills—they could send messages across an area many times larger than all of China, and they could do it so quickly and cleverly that even we modern folks might be impressed!
Alright, let's put on our imagination hats, hop on the time machine, and get ready to meet this incredible Mongol Empire!
Did You Know? There Was Once a Super-Huge Empire in the World! 🎪
Long, long ago—more specifically, over 800 years ago—there was an extraordinarily large empire in the world. Its name was the "Mongol Empire," and it was established by an amazing leader. You've probably heard of this leader before—his name was Genghis Khan.
Genghis Khan—doesn't that name sound powerful? In the Mongolian language, his name means "the strongest ruler." And guess what? He really was one of the most powerful people in the world at that time! He went from being a poor little boy with almost nothing to becoming an emperor who ruled over tens of millions of square kilometers of land. This story is even more exciting than the best cartoon!
The Young Genghis Khan 📖
Genghis Khan didn't actually start with that famous name. When he was born, his parents gave him a simple little name: "Temüjin." His father was the leader of a small tribe—not a big shot, but they lived a decent life.
But fate can be cruel sometimes. When Temüjin was just nine years old, his father was murdered. After that, young Temüjin and his mother and siblings were left with no one to protect them. They lost their cattle and sheep, their warm home, and sometimes they didn't even have enough food to eat.
To make things worse, young Temüjin was even captured by enemies and made into a prisoner—like when the hero in a cartoon gets locked up in a castle. He was tied up tightly and almost couldn't escape. But Temüjin never gave up. He found a way to escape and kept living strong.
These difficult times lasted for many years. Young Temüjin worked as a shepherd for others and was very poor at times. But it was precisely these hardships that taught him how to survive in tough conditions, and it made him understand the people and tribes across the grasslands and their ways of life.
One day, the young Temüjin decided he was done being pushed around by others. He started uniting the small tribes around him—just like collecting teammates in a video game—and slowly, his power grew. When leaders of other tribes saw how amazing this young man was, they all wanted to follow him. Gradually, Temüjin went from a nobody to the most powerful leader on the grasslands!
In the year 1206 CE, when Temüjin was about 44 years old, all the Mongol tribes on the grasslands finally united. They gathered together for a huge meeting—called a "Khuruldai" in Mongolian. At this meeting, all the tribal leaders unanimously chose Temüjin as the supreme leader of the entire Mongol nation and gave him a grand title—Genghis Khan, meaning "the most powerful ruler of all under heaven!"
Genghis Khan and His "Super Squad" 🤝
What made Genghis Khan truly amazing wasn't just how strong or brave he was—it was that he knew how to get others to help him. He was especially good at making friends—not regular friends to play games with, but super partners who were willing to help him conquer the world and build something great together.
He had many capable generals under his command, each with their own special skills. For example, there was a man named Borjigin who had been Genghis Khan's best friend since childhood—no matter what troubles Genghis Khan faced, Borjigin was always by his side, just like our best friends. Then there was Mukhulai, a general who was incredibly good at winning battles. Whenever he was around, the soldiers felt safe and confident.
Then there was a general named Jebe, whose archery skills were absolutely legendary! They say he could hit targets hundreds of meters away, and every single arrow found its mark. In an age without guns or cannons, being an accurate archer was like being a world-class sniper today!
Genghis Khan gathered all these talented people together, like a real-life superhero team. Each member had their own superpowers, and Genghis Khan was their captain, responsible for combining everyone's strengths to achieve incredible things!
How Big Was the Empire? Let's Compare! 📏
Now that we've heard all this, you probably want to know just how big this empire really was. Let's play a "size comparison" game!
Is China big nowadays? Of course it is! When we take a high-speed train from Beijing to Guangzhou, it takes seven or eight hours; when we fly from the easternmost point of China to the westernmost point, that takes three or four hours. China covers 9.6 million square kilometers, which is like 96 million football fields put together!
But did you know? When
