Do you remember the first time you saw the ocean? It was a vast expanse of blue, with the water meeting the sky as if they were one giant blue puzzle, perfectly connected. The waves rolled toward the beach one after another, making sounds like "whoosh—whoosh," as if the sea were whispering secrets to you. You bent down and stepped on the soft sand with your little feet, feeling the cool seawater flow between your toes. That ticklish, cool feeling makes you want to laugh.
Perhaps you think: the sea is so beautiful! But why is the ocean so blue? Why is seawater salty? What's on the other side of the sea? These questions sprouted quietly in your heart, like a tiny seed waiting for the day to explore the answers.
Actually, ancient humans asked these same questions long ago. And their curiosity was far greater than we can imagine! They weren't satisfied with just standing on the shore watching the sea; they wanted to get closer to it, to know what was on the other side. So they did something extraordinary—they went to sea.
Part 1: From Fear to Affinity—Humanity's First Handshake with the Ocean
Long, long ago, about tens of thousands of years ago, humans couldn't build houses or grow crops. Every day was spent searching for food. When early humans saw the ocean, what did they feel?
Imagine if you were a person from that time, visiting the ocean for the first time. What would you see? An endless blue, tumbling waves, and the thunderous roar of the sea. You try to walk closer, the seawater is ice-cold, the sea wind is howling, and there's a strange smell in the air—fishy and salty.
Do you know what scared people most about the ocean? It was so big! So vast that you couldn't see the edge, so enormous that it felt like a giant monster that could swallow you whole. When the sea got angry, it was terrifying! Waves could be taller than houses, winds could knock you down, and during typhoons, the entire sea turned into a furious beast.
So early humans felt both curious and afraid of the ocean. They didn't dare get too close, let alone go out to sea. But the sea also had a gentle side. When the weather was calm, the sea brought many gifts—crabs crawling on the beach, shells hanging on the rocks, little fish swimming in the shallow water, and all kinds of seaweed and starfish.
Humans slowly discovered that although the ocean was scary, it was also a giant "refrigerator" and "restaurant." The sea had endless fish, shrimp, crabs, and many beautiful shells that could be made into decorations.
Part 2: The Earliest "Little Wooden Bowls"—Humanity's First Boats
Smart humans began to think: if we could float on the water, wouldn't we stay afloat? This idea sounds simple, but it was a huge leap in human history!
What did the earliest boats look like? You might not believe it—they might have just been big logs! Imagine holding a very long log and jumping into a river. The log floats up, and you float too! Although the log wasn't easy to control in the water, spinning around now and then, at least you didn't sink.
Later, humans discovered that hollowing out a log and sitting inside it was much more stable. This led to the creation of the "canoe"—a hollowed-out log shaped like a little bowl, where people sat inside and paddled forward with wooden sticks.
Did You Know? > > Archaeologists have discovered ancient canoe remains all over the world. Some canoes are over 8,000 years old! In the Netherlands, archaeologists found an oak canoe from over 4,000 years ago, about 10 meters long, that could hold several people!
Human imagination grew more and more creative. Some people tied several logs together to make "rafts"; others wove reeds into "reed boats"; and some stretched animal skins over wooden frames to create "skin boats." These simple vessels were humanity's first steps in conquering the ocean!
Part 3: The Phoenicians: The "Kings of Navigation" in the Mediterranean
Long ago, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, lived an amazing people—the Phoenicians. They lived in what is now Lebanon, a place full of tall, majestic cedar trees.
The Phoenicians were natural sailors and merchants. Did you know? They are considered the greatest seafaring people of the ancient world! Their fleets traveled to every corner of the Mediterranean Sea, and sometimes even ventured into the distant Atlantic Ocean.
The ships the Phoenicians built were magnificent! They used cedar wood for the hulls—light, strong, and wonderfully fragrant. Their merchant ships were filled with all kinds of goods—purple dyes, beautiful glassware, exquisite textiles, and gold and silver treasures traded from distant lands.
How amazing were the Phoenicians? It's said that once, an Egyptian pharaoh—the greatest king of ancient Egypt—wanted to know the distance from his country to the sea, but no one dared to measure it. The Phoenicians stepped forward and said: "Let us do it!" They sailed along the coastline, all the way around, and finally returned to report: "Your Majesty, starting from your country, sailing around the sea and back took three full years!"
Did You Know? > > The Phoenicians made another tremendous contribution—they invented the first true alphabet in human history! Can you imagine? Our alphabet actually developed from Phoenician letters. About 3,000 years ago, Phoenician merchants needed to keep accounts and write letters, so they created 22 simple symbols to represent sounds. Later, this alphabet was passed to the Greeks, who added more letters, eventually becoming the alphabet we use today!
The Phoenicians established many colonies—sending people to distant lands to settle and build new cities. One of the most famous colonies was called Carthage, located in present-day Tunisia. It grew so powerful that it almost defeated the mighty Roman Empire.
