Cloud Quest: Chapter One — The Gateway to the Cloud
---
It was an ordinary Friday evening. The sky outside was gradually darkening, and streetlights flickered on one by one. Xiao Yun, just fourteen years old, had barely set down his school bag before his mother催促他去写作业。He sighed, flopping down at his somewhat worn computer desk, and expertly pressed the power button on his tower.
The screen glowed to life with its familiar startup sound.
The whirring sound of the computer fan filled the room. The monitor displayed Windows' familiar loading screen. Xiao Yun stared blankly at the icons on his desktop—browser, WeChat, NetEase Cloud Music, and a few game shortcuts. These were the things he used every day, just like millions of other middle school students.
However, just as the desktop fully loaded, something strange happened.
A blinding white light suddenly appeared in the center of his screen, growing brighter and brighter, almost piercing through Xiao Yun's eyes. Instinctively, he tried to close his eyes, but found his body seemed frozen in place, completely unable to move.
"What's... what's happening?" Xiao Yun whispered in terror, his voice trembling with fear.
Just as he thought he would be consumed by the light, a gentle wind chime rang in his ears. The sound was clear and pleasant, like a flowing stream in the mountains, or the rustling of bamboo leaves in the wind. Then, a voice he'd never heard before echoed through the room:
"Welcome to Cloud Continent, young adventurer."
Xiao Yun's eyes snapped open. He was no longer in his room. He sat on a fluffy white cloud, surrounded by endless blue sky, golden sunlight pouring through gaps in the clouds, bathing the entire world in warm gold.
"Where... where am I?" Xiao Yun looked at the scene before him in disbelief. "Am I dreaming?"
"No, this is not a dream." The voice spoke again, and this time, Xiao Yun finally saw who—or what—was speaking.
A tiny creature, about the size of a palm, floated before him. It was light blue in color, shaped like a fluffy cloud but with expressive big eyes and a pair of transparent wings. When it fluttered, tiny specks of light drifted down from its wings, like a miniature star shower.
"My name is Yunyun, the guide sprite of Cloud Continent," the tiny creature introduced itself in a clear voice. "Xiao Yun, welcome to the world of cloud computing!"
Xiao Yun blinked, trying to compose himself from the shock. He pinched his cheek—"Ouch," it hurt. This really wasn't a dream.
"Yunyun? You said this is... the world of cloud computing?" Xiao Yun asked carefully. "But I've only seen this term in textbooks. I've never seen what real cloud computing looks like."
Yunyun blinked its large eyes and gave a mysterious smile: "Then let me take you on a great exploration today! But before we begin our adventure, I think I should explain to you what 'the cloud' actually is, and why we need 'the cloud.'"
---
What is Cloud Computing?
Yunyun flapped its wings, descending slowly before Xiao Yun, then sat cross-legged on the white cloud, assuming a storytelling pose.
"Did you know, Xiao Yun, that the concept of 'the cloud' has a long history in the computing world?" Yunyun's voice became serious. "In the early days of computer development, if someone wanted to use a computer for calculations, they had to own one themselves. But computers back then were huge, bulky, and extremely expensive—far beyond what ordinary people could afford."
Xiao Yun nodded thoughtfully. "I've heard of those old computers. I think they were called 'ENIAC' or something, and they were bigger than an entire room."
"That's right, ENIAC!" Yunyun said excitedly, flapping its wings. "The world's first general-purpose computer weighed 30 tons, occupied 170 square meters, and cost $480,000. But the computer you're using now—" Yunyun flew over to Xiao Yun's laptop, circling around it, "—weighs less than 2 kilograms, costs just a few thousand yuan, yet its computing power is countless times stronger than ENIAC's."
This comparison astounded Xiao Yun. He looked down at his laptop, never imagining that this little device he usually complained was "too slow" contained such incredible power.
Yunyun continued: "But here's the problem. Even though personal computers have become so powerful, there are still many things that a single computer cannot handle. For example—"
As Yunyun spoke, Xiao Yun suddenly noticed the cloud beneath him beginning to move. They floated on a giant cloud, drifting slowly toward the distance. Soon, a massive city appeared on the horizon.
"Wow, what's that..." Xiao Yun's jaw dropped.
"That's the core city of Cloud Continent—Compute City." Yunyun introduced proudly. "Come, let me take you there. Once you see it, you'll understand what cloud computing really is."

City of Computation — The Core of Cloud Computing
The cloud slowly descended, finally landing on a plaza at the city's entrance. Xiao Yun hopped off the cloud, looking around in complete awe at what he saw.
The buildings in this city were unlike anything Xiao Yun had ever seen. They had uniquely beautiful designs—some shaped like giant open books, others like towers built from stacked blocks, and still others like transparent bubbles floating in the air. But what shocked Xiao Yun the most was the scale of these buildings—they grew taller and taller, stretching endlessly upward, as if reaching for the heavens.
"Xiao Yun, welcome to the model world of data centers," Yunyun said proudly, spreading its arms wide. "All the secrets of cloud computing are hidden in this city."
"Data center?" Xiao Yun repeated the term curiously.
"Exactly! You can think of a data center as a super-large warehouse," Yunyun flew beside a massive building with transparent walls, allowing Xiao Yun to see its structure clearly. "However, this warehouse doesn't store goods—it stores tens of thousands of computer servers."
