Imagine this: It's a bright morning, and you sit down at the breakfast table. There's a steaming bowl of oatmeal, a glass of fresh milk, and a slice of golden toast with butter melting on top. Have you ever stopped to wonder—where did all this food come from? Who worked hard to grow the wheat in your bread? Who took care of the cow that gave you that milk? How did all these ingredients travel from faraway places to land right here on your plate?
This question might seem simple at first glance, but if you think deeper, you'll discover that the journey of food is far more magical and complex than you ever imagined. Like an exciting adventure, every kind of food has its own story—and within each story lies countless fascinating facts waiting to be discovered.
Let's begin our journey with a tiny, little seed.
🌾 小麦的神奇之旅——从种子到面包 {#wheat-journey}
Every year, farmers around the world plant billions upon billions of tiny wheat seeds. Each seed is no bigger than your fingernail, shaped like a small oval pillow with a beautiful golden-brown coat. It might seem so small and ordinary sitting quietly in your palm, but hidden inside is an enormous dream—to transform into a golden wheat field, and eventually become the delicious bread in your hands!
The story begins in a warm spring. A farmer gently scatters seeds into soft, loose soil. At this moment, the seed is like a sleeping baby, resting quietly in the darkness underground. But don't think it's doing nothing! Wrapped in the soil's embrace, the seed is drinking deeply, gulp after gulp.
The germination process of a wheat seed is like a magical show in a microscopic world. When the seed absorbs enough water, amazing changes happen inside. The starch and proteins inside the seed begin to break down into nutrients the tiny sprout can use. A few days later, a small white shoot emerges from the bottom of the seed—this is the plant's first root, what we call the "radicle." At the same time, the top of the seed swells with a tiny bump, and a delicate green bud breaks through, struggling to grow toward the light.
Underground, the sprout first grows several tiny leaves, wrapped in a protective covering called the "coleoptile"—like a baby wrapped in a blanket. The coleoptile pushes upward through the soil, creating a path for the true leaves. When the first real leaf emerges from the top of the coleoptile, the plant completes its important transition from "underground life" to "above-ground life," beginning its great mission of photosynthesis.
> > Wheat seeds need only two things to germinate: water and the right temperature. When soil temperature is between 8-12°C, wheat seeds love to sprout. If the temperature is too hot or too cold, the seed will "act lazy" and refuse to germinate!
After the sprout breaks through the ground, it becomes a green little wheat seedling. This is when the real work begins for the farmer. They must water the seedlings, add fertilizer, and remove weeds—with the same care as looking after a baby.
The growth process of wheat seedlings is fascinating. During the first few months, it focuses mainly on growing roots and leaves. The roots dig deeper and deeper into the soil, absorbing more water and nutrients. The leaves multiply under the sunlight, carrying out magical photosynthesis—turning sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into the energy the plant needs.
After about two or three months, something begins to change in the wheat seedlings. Instead of just growing taller and greener, it starts pushing out a thick, strong stem from the base of its leaves. This stem keeps growing higher and higher, eventually reaching about one meter tall! Botanists gave this growth stage a lovely name: the "stem elongation stage"—meaning the wheat is growing with great effort, just like when you're growing taller.
Now comes the most exciting moment—the wheat is about to flower! However, wheat flowers are extremely tiny—so small you can barely see them. Wheat belongs to the "self-pollinating" plant family, meaning the pollen from one wheat flower can fall directly onto the stigma of the same flower, completing pollination all by itself. This clever design means wheat doesn't need bees or butterflies to help during flowering.
After successful pollination, wheat begins to form seeds. Initially, the grains are green, small, and soft, with a slightly moist feel when you squeeze them. As time passes, the grains slowly grow bigger and harder, their color gradually changing from green to golden yellow. When the grains are fully mature, the entire wheat plant transforms into a field of gleaming gold—the most wonderful sight for any farmer!
> > How many grains can one wheat head produce? You might not believe it—about 20 to 50 grains per head! Since one wheat plant usually has 5 to 8 heads, a single plant can produce 100 to 400 grains. One mu of land (about 667 square meters) planted with high-yield wheat can produce 400 to 600 kilograms of grain!

The wheat is ripe and ready—now it goes to the flour mill for its magical transformation! This process is really interesting.
First, the farmer uses a machine called a "combine harvester" to reap the wheat. This machine is amazing—it cuts the wheat, separates the grains from the stalks, and stores the grains in its own "big belly." One combine harvester can harvest dozens of mu of land in a single day—if this work were done by hand, it would take dozens of people working for several days!
The harvested wheat grains go to the flour mill. The workers there first wash and dry the grains, then use a machine called a "grinder" to crush the wheat into powder. The milling process is quite particular: the outermost layer of wheat is called "bran," and we need to re
