Chapter 1: The Fragmentation of Anatolia: Power Vacuum in 13th-century Anatolia and the Rise of the Ottoman Tribe
On June 26, 1243, the wind over the Kösedağ Plain in eastern Anatolia carried the stench of blood and scorched dry grass. The war banner of Sultan Kaykhusraw II of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum was pierced by Mongol arrows and slammed heavily onto the flint-covered ground—this battle not only rewrote the fate of Anatolia, but also laid the first cornerstone for the rise of an obscure Turkic tribe that had been lingering on the edge of the sultanate's ruins. No one at the time could have imagined that this small tribe, struggling to survive on the margins of the collapsed realm, would cross Europe, Asia and Africa in the next 600 years and become the founder of the last truly land-based empire in world history.
To understand the rise of the Ottoman tribe, one must return to the fragmented power pattern of Anatolia in the 13th century. In 1071, the Seljuk Turks defeated the Byzantine Empire in the Battle of Manzikert, opening the door to the Anatolian Plateau. In 1077, Seljuk noble Suleiman established the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum in Konya, which controlled most of Anatolia at its peak and became the Anatolian branch of the cross-Eurasian Seljuk Empire. However, after the 12th century, the Sultanate of Rum gradually became feudalized: in order to win over local nobles, the sultan distributed large amounts of land to Turkic tribal leaders, these nobles known as "Bey" (Turkic for "chief, leader") gradually built up their own armies and formed independent local separatist forces, and the sultan's authority continued to decline. By the early 13th century, the Sultanate of Rum had actually split into dozens of large and small beyliks, and the sultan could only control the core area around Konya, and the entire Anatolian plateau was in a state of de facto anarchy.

However, after the 12th century, the Sultanate of Rum gradually underwent feudalization: in order to win over local nobles, the sultan distributed large amounts of land to Turkic tribal leaders in the form of the *iqta* system—a land tenure system prevalent in the Islamic world that granted military nobles the revenue from fiefs as salary in exchange for military service. While the land was theoretically not hereditary, in practice it often gradually became the private property of the nobles. These nobles, known as "Bey" (Turkic for "tribal chief"), gradually built up their own armies and formed independent local separatist forces, and the sultan's authority continued to decline. By the early 13th century, the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum had actually split into dozens of large and small beyliks, and the sultan could only control the core area around Konya, and the entire Anatolian plateau was in a state of de facto anarchy.

Hulagu, the grandson of Mongol Great Khan Batu, led the Mongol expeditionary force into Anatolia. Sultan Kaykhusraw II of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum led an army of 100,000 to meet the enemy, but was badly defeated by the Mongol cavalry, and the sultan himself was seriously injured and died shortly after the battle. After the war, the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum became a vassal of the Mongol Ilkhanate (one of the four Mongol khanates, ruling Persia, Anatolia, Iraq and other places from 1256 to 1335), and had to pay a large amount of tribute to the Ilkhanate every year. The sultan completely became a puppet of the Mongols, and the local beys took the opportunity to completely break away from the control of the sultan and become independent forces. At this time, Anatolia formed a tripartite power pattern: the Ilkhanate in the north was the nominal suzerain, but had weak actual control, only stationing a small number of troops in major cities to collect taxes, and basically adopted indirect rule over the inland beyliks; the remnant of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum in the south was just a puppet regime; the Byzantine Empire in the west was severely weakened after the Fourth Crusade in 1204, with Constantinople occupied by the crusaders, and the empire split into three successor regimes: the Empire of Nicaea, the Despotate of Epirus and the Empire of Trebizond, only controlling a few coastal strongholds in northwestern Anatolia; while the inland plateau was divided by dozens of Turkic beyliks, attacking each other, and the whole region fell into an unprecedented power vacuum.
The Origin of the Ottoman Tribe: From the Oghuz Migration to the Söğüt Fief
