Chapter 1: Don't Let Math Learning Become a Chore: Rethinking Early Childhood Math Education
On a weekend morning at a local early education center, 4-year-old Xiaoyu pushes his arithmetic worksheet away as far as he can, his face flushed red with frustration: "I hate math! Math is the worst thing ever!" His mother sitting across from him gets more and more anxious: "All the other kids in your class can already do 10 plus 10, why can't you even get 2 plus 2 right? If you don't practice now, you'll definitely fall behind when you start primary school!" Does this conversation sound familiar? Around us, too many parents equate math enlightenment with "learning arithmetic in advance" and "doing practice problems to build speed", turning what should be a fun mathematical exploration into a "chore" in children's childhood.
We always say "don't let your child lose at the starting line", but many people's understanding of the "starting line" has long gone off track: they treat math enlightenment as a knowledge competition, comparing whose child can recite the multiplication table earlier and do addition and subtraction within 100 earlier, but they completely ignore the basic laws of children's cognitive development, and forget that math itself should be a subject full of exploration fun. In this chapter, we will first deconstruct the most widespread myths of early math education, clarify the real goals of math enlightenment for children aged 3-8, and then talk to you about the design logic of this book to help you find the reading method that suits you best.
According to Piaget's theory of cognitive development, children aged 3-8 are in the transition stage from pre-operational thinking to concrete operational thinking: they can only understand abstract concepts through concrete objects and direct perceptual experience, and cannot understand abstract symbols and rules through pure memory. Forcing a 3-year-old child to recite "1+1=2" without letting him touch two apples and put them together is just rote memorization, and he will never understand what addition really means.

> Research Backing: A 2021 study published in *Journal of Experimental Child Psychology* found that there is no significant correlation between the amount of arithmetic knowledge children master before age 6 and their math performance in primary school, but there is a strong positive correlation between their interest in math and their long-term math performance.

- 不用数就能感知数量的能力:就是看到3个橘子放在桌上,不用一个个数就知道是3个,知道3比2多1,比4少1;
- 理解数字之间关系的能力:知道5可以分成2和3,7比5大2,3个2加起来是6;

For example, if your child asks you "why the moon is sometimes round and sometimes crescent", you don't need to explain complex astronomy to him. Just take him to look at the moon every night, let him draw the shape of the moon in a small notebook, and keep recording for a month. He will naturally discover the rule that "the moon becomes full every few days, then slowly wanes, and becomes full again after a few days" — this is the most basic mathematical thinking: observation, recording, induction, and finding patterns. It is much more useful than letting him recite the "15 multiplication table", because this is a rule he discovered himself, he will remember it for a long time, and he will feel that "math can be used to explain things around us".
What we often call "mathematical thinking" is essentially not the ability to solve difficult problems, but the ability to use mathematical logic to view the world and solve problems. It includes basic abilities such as classification, sorting, correspondence, finding patterns, logical reasoning, and spatial imagination. These abilities are not only cultivated by learning arithmetic, but can be practiced everywhere in daily games. For example, letting children sort toys at home by color is cultivating classification ability; letting children line up building blocks from large to small is cultivating sorting ability; letting children give each doll 1 piece of cake is cultivating one-to-one correspondence ability; letting children play puzzles and build Lego is cultivating spatial imagination ability — these abilities are the foundation for children to solve all math problems and even life problems when they go to primary school, middle school, and even as adults.
