Meeting Zhixiao: A Robot Who Can Learn
The morning sunlight streamed through the massive glass dome of the Science and Technology Museum, casting golden patches of light across the polished floors. It was a busy weekend, and the museum was filled with excited children and curious parents. The air carried the sweet scent of popcorn mixed with something harder to name—a technological aroma, perhaps the smell of metal, plastic, and electronic components all blended together.
Ming was especially happy today. His dad had promised to take him to this city's most famous science museum, and he had been looking forward to it for a whole month.
"Dad, look!" Ming tugged at his father's hand, pointing to a gleaming exhibition area ahead. "There's a robot show over there!"
At eight years old, Ming was a boy with an exceptionally curious mind. His room was filled with science books and building toys of every kind—from rocket models to programmable robots. His dream was to grow up and become a great scientist who could invent machines to help humanity.
"Slow down, be careful you don't fall!" his dad called from behind, but Ming had already rushed toward the robot exhibition area like a gust of wind.
He squeezed through the crowd and finally caught sight of the legendary robot performance zone. There stood a row of various robots: some could play the piano, others could play chess, and still more could dance. They performed all sorts of complex movements, drawing rounds of amazed gasps from the surrounding audience.
Ming watched with rapt attention. He noticed that each robot had a small placard beside it, explaining how it worked: "This robot, controlled by programming, can play piano pieces with precision"..."That robot is equipped with advanced algorithms to analyze chess positions and select optimal moves"...
Just as Ming was carefully reading these explanations, his gaze suddenly landed on a small, unassuming display stand in the corner.
The stand was quite small and seemed rather humble compared to the gleaming giants around it. On the stand stood a little robot about thirty centimeters tall, its shape round and adorable, looking like a cute little egg. The robot's shell was light blue, its eyes two tiny light-emitting diodes that were currently blinking, as if curiously打量着周围的一切。
Ming couldn't resist walking over and crouching down to take a closer look.
"Hey there, little guy," Ming said softly.
Something amazing happened—the little robot actually turned its head, looked at him with those two glowing eyes, and then produced a series of clear, pleasant electronic sounds:
"Hello! My name is Zhixiao. I noticed you're very interested in me. Would you like to be my friend?"
Ming nearly fell backward from surprise. "You... you can talk? And greet people on your own?"
A cute smiley face appeared on Zhixiao's screen. "Of course! I'm different from those machines that can only dance or play piano. I can think, I can learn, and I can make my own decisions!"
Ming became even more curious. He looked around and noticed that unlike the other robot displays with lengthy explanations, this booth only had a small card that read:
Zhixiao—A Robot Who Can Learn
*Characteristics: Zhixiao can learn new skills through interaction with his environment, just like humans. He doesn't need someone to tell him what to do. Instead, through continuous trying, he discovers which behaviors are good and which are not, gradually learning how to accomplish tasks better.*
"Wow!" Ming exclaimed with excitement. "That's so cool! Can you show me? What can you do?"
Zhixiao blinked his eyes: "Let me think... I just arrived here not long ago and I'm still learning many things. But I can demonstrate how I learn. Look over there—"
Zhixiao pointed with his finger (a tiny mechanical arm) toward a small game beside the display. The game looked simple: in a little maze, there was a goal position and a correct path. Zhixiao's task was to find the way from the start to the goal.
Zhixiao started moving. He carefully took his first step—but unfortunately, he bumped into a wall.
"Ouch!" Zhixiao let out an adorable cry. "That hurt!"
Ming couldn't help but laugh. Zhixiao tried another direction, took a few steps, and then—
Bumped into a wall again.
Third time, fourth time, fifth time... Zhixiao bumped into walls or walked into dead ends again and again.
Ming watched with growing sympathy: "Zhixiao, you're bumping into walls so many times. Won't you break?"
Zhixiao's screen displayed a determined expression: "It's okay! I won't break. And you know what? Every time I bump into a wall, I learn something new."
"Learn something?" Ming asked, puzzled. "Can bumping into walls teach you things?"
Zhixiao stopped moving (he was on his 23rd attempt to cross the maze) and explained seriously:
"Let me tell you my secret. Actually, I have a special learning system in my head. I call it my 'Reinforcement Learning Brain.'"
What is Reinforcement Learning
Zhixiao cleared his throat (though robots don't really need to do this, he felt it made him look more like a little teacher) and began to explain:
"You know, robots like us have many different ways of learning. Just like you humans—some students learn by listening to the teacher, some by reading books, and others by watching videos."
"We're the same way. Some robots work based on programs written by human developers—like those robots you saw that can play piano or chess. Every movement they make is pre-written code."
"But I'm different!" Zhixiao said proudly, puffing out his chest. "I learn through something called 'Reinforcement Learning.'"
Ming tilted his head thoughtfully: "Reinforcement learning? That sounds very professional. Can you explain it in a simpler way?"
Zhixiao smiled (his screen displayed a smiley face): "Of course! The principle is actually quite simple. Imagine if you wanted to learn to ride a bicycle—what would yo
