*In March 2016, DeepMind's AlphaGo defeated world champion Lee Sedol 4:1 in Seoul. At that moment, the world believed "AI has surpassed humans." Yet just three years later, a robotic arm from the same research team, asked to "place the red block into the blue box," took a full 30 minutes to complete the task — while a three-year-old child needed only 3 seconds.*
*The gap between these two facts is enormous. It is not a difference in algorithmic capability, but a difference in whether the AI has a body.*
*This is the core question we want to answer in Chapter 1:*
> > *Why doesn't an AlphaGo that plays chess equal a robot that pours water? What is the fundamental difference between embodied intelligence and "screen AI"?*
*Let's start with an ancient story.*
---
1.1 盲人摸象:当 AI 失去了"身体" / The Blind Men and the Elephant: When AI Loses Its "Body"
The Ancient Fable
*Once upon a time, five blind men had never seen an elephant. They each touched different parts of the elephant — the ear, the trunk, the leg, the tail, the body — and an argument arose:*
*(The first said, "An elephant is like a big fan!")*
*(The second said, "An elephant is like a water pipe!")*
*(The third said, "An elephant is like a pillar!")*
*Each was right, and each was wrong. Because each of them only touched a fragment of the elephant, lacking a complete "world model."*
*This story, 2500 years later, still perfectly describes the problem faced by traditional AI.*
1.1.2 "屏幕 AI"为什么是盲人 / Why "Screen AI" Is Blind
*Almost all AI running on our phones and computers today — the ones playing chess, writing poetry, drawing pictures, answering questions — can be classified as Disembodied AI. Their common characteristics are:*
*(No body: They have no hands, no feet, no eyes, no ears.)* 2. *(No physical world: They live in digital characters, pixels, and matrices.)* 3. *(No time pressure: When playing chess, you can take back a wrong move; when writing wrong, you can delete and start over.)*
*This kind of AI is like the blind man — it can "see" data but cannot "touch" the real world.*
(Let's look at an example):当 ChatGPT 告诉你"水是湿的"时,它并不"知道"湿是什么意思。
*When ChatGPT tells you "water is wet," it does not "know" what wet means. It has simply learned from billions of texts that the words "water" and "wet" often appear together. It has never put its hand in water.*
Robots Need a "Body" to Build Common Sense
*Our human "understanding" of a glass is far more than the dictionary definition. It includes:*
*(**Visual**: It is transparent, fragile, with a smooth surface.)*
*(**Tactile**: It feels cool and slippery.)*
*(**Auditory**: When struck, it produces a crisp "ding." )*
*(**Weight sense**: It has mass; gripping requires applying moderate force.)*
*This knowledge doesn't come from reading, but from bodily experience. If we deprive a child of their body and only let them read a dictionary, they will never learn to "handle the glass carefully."*
*This is the core idea revealed by one of the most important discoveries in cognitive science since the 1980s — the Embodied Cognition Theory.*
---
Embodied Cognition: The Mind as an Extension of the Body
What Is Embodied Cognition
*Embodied Cognition is an important theory in psychology and cognitive science. Its core claim can be summarized in one sentence:*
> > *The mind is not a program run independently by the brain; the mind is the product of real-time interaction among the brain, the body, and the environment.*
*This sounds philosophical, but its practical implications are very concrete. Let's look at three pieces of evidence from real research:*
(Evidence 1: Temperature affects social judgment)
*(Experiment: Participants held a hot coffee in one hand and iced coffee in the other, then evaluated the personality of the same person.)*
*(Result: Those holding hot coffee rated the person as "warmer" and "friendlier.")*
(Evidence 2: Cleaning behavior changes moral judgment)
*(Experiment: Participants were asked to recall a morally tainted event, then some went to wash their hands.)*
*(Result: Those who washed their hands showed significantly reduced guilt about past immoral behavior.)*
(Evidence 3: Body posture affects confidence)
*(Experiment: Participants held "high-power poses" (chest out, head up) or "low-power poses" (curled up, head down) for two minutes.)*
*(Result: Those holding high-power poses performed more confidently and were more willing to take risks.)*
*All three experiments show: the state of the body directly affects the mind's judgment. This is not "psychological suggestion" but the result of deep coupling between the brain's neural network and the body's sensory system.*
*Understanding embodied cognition, we can see the fundamental problem of 20th-century AI.*
*From the 1956 Dartmouth Conference, mainstream AI research took a "symbolist" path. Its core assumption was:*
> > *As long as we give the computer a correct symbolic system (e.g., "if...then..."), it can think like a human.*
*The fundamental error of this assumption: it treats "intelligence" as pure computation in the brain, ignoring the role of body and environment.*
*Consider a simple example. Imagine you tell an AI that has never seen a table: "Put the cup on the table."*
(Symbolist AI's approach):
- "放" → 触发动作算子 `place(cup, table)`
*Sounds flawless? But in a real scenario, the AI needs to answer at least these questions first:*
1. 桌子上已经有东西了,怎么办?*(There's already something on the table, what to do?)* 2. 杯子里有水,水会洒出来,怎么办?*(The cup contains water, it will spill, what to do?)* 3. 桌子腿有点摇晃,杯子放上去会滑,怎么办?*(The table leg is wobbly, the cup will slide if placed, what to do?)* 4. 桌子的边缘距离机械臂太远,怎么办?*(The table edge is too far from the robot arm, what to do?)*
*None of these questions can be described by symbols. They require "experience"
