Africa, a continent covering approximately one-fifth of the world's landmass, possesses over three million years of human evolutionary history and at least ten thousand years of civilization. Yet in most contemporary history textbooks worldwide, Africa is presented as an "exception" in historical development—a continent lacking civilizational traditions, historical records, and achievements worth documenting. The roots of this perception do not derive from objective study of African historical materials, but are deeply embedded in the knowledge systems and power discourses formed during the colonial era. The core objective of this book is precisely to systematically challenge this entrenched historical prejudice, reconstructing a more accurate and comprehensive picture of African history through in-depth study of Africa's great kingdoms.
The Construction of the "Dark Continent" Myth: Colonialism and Knowledge Production
The term "Dark Continent" is not an indigenous African label, but an othering tag imposed by European colonizers onto this land. To understand how this concept became the dominant framework through which the West perceives Africa, we must trace its historical formation and comprehend how colonialism was not merely political and economic domination, but also domination through knowledge production.
##### Pre-Colonial African Images
Prior to the large-scale European arrival in Africa at the end of the 15th century, European knowledge of Africa was extremely limited but not entirely negative. Medieval European maps depicted Africa as a continent filled with exotic flora and fauna and mysterious kingdoms. The 14th-century travels of Ibn Battuta provided detailed accounts of his observations in the Mali Empire of West Africa, portraying a prosperous civilization of sophisticated culture. Timbuktu, as one of the most important academic centers in the world at the time, attracted scholars from across the Islamic world, its libraries housing countless precious manuscripts. Marco Polo's accounts of Africa in "The Travels of Marco Polo," though filled with imagination and misreporting, also mentioned powerful Black kingdoms and abundant gold resources.
However, as Portuguese explorers ventured deeper along Africa's western coast—especially after Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1488 and Vasco da Gama reached India in 1498—the role of Africa in European colonial discourse underwent a fundamental transformation. Africa was no longer merely a distant, mysterious other world, but became a source of raw materials for European capitalist expansion, a strategic point for labor and commodity trade, and a potential target for religious conversion. This transformation marked the beginning of the colonization of African historical writing.
##### Academic Packaging of the Continent Myth
The widespread popularization of the term "Dark Continent" coincided with the peak of 19th-century European colonialism. Henry Morton Stanley's expeditions in Central Africa in 1876, and the subsequent European powers' "Scramble for Africa," solidified this pejorative label within Western discourse. However, what truly endowed the "Dark Continent" narrative with academic legitimacy was the rise of racial science and anthropology in the late 19th century.
During this period, Charles Darwin's theory of evolution was severely distorted and applied to human societies, giving rise to so-called "Social Darwinism." This theoretical framework divided human groups into different "races," claiming these races occupied different positions on the evolutionary ladder. Accordingly, Europe's "civilized" peoples were argued to be at the highest stage of human development, while Africa's "Black" populations were placed at the lowest level, considered "stagnant" or "degenerate" groups in the human evolutionary process. This pseudo-scientific racism provided the ideological foundation for the so-called "civilizing mission" of colonial rule.
Edward Burnett Tylor's "cultural evolutionism," proposed in 1871, further reinforced this prejudice. According to Tylor's theory of "survivals," cultures around the world were at different stages of evolution, with Africa being viewed as the "childhood" or "primitive stage" of human culture. Within this framework, African social organizations, religious beliefs, and artistic expressions were all interpreted as evidence of "primitiveness" or "savagery," rather than civilizational achievements with their own logic and cultural value.
Scholars such as the renowned archaeologist Augustus Pitt Rivers and anthropologist James George Frazer, while conducting detailed documentation of African cultures, employed recording methods imbued with strong prejudice. Their research often emphasized differences between African and European "civilization," presenting Africa as an early stage of human development, while ignoring the complexity, internal diversity, and historical transformations of African societies. This paradigm continued to dominate Western academic understanding of Africa until the mid-20th century.
##### Historical Distortion of the Atlantic Slave Trade
The Atlantic Slave Trade had a profound impact on distorting the understanding of African history. Historians estimate that between the 16th and 19th centuries, approximately 12 to 15 million Africans were forcibly transported across the Atlantic and sold into slavery. This largest forced migration in human history not only destroyed thousands of African communities and distorted African social structures, but fundamentally shaped Western perceptions of Africa.
In European colonial discourse, the slave trade was used to argue for the "backwardness" and "savagery" of African civilizations. Europeans claimed that it was precisely because African societies lacked effective political organization an
