Starting from Our Home
A Small Town on Earth
The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, landing on the face of a nine-year-old girl named Xiaoyu. She rubbed her eyes, sat up from her warm little bed, and stretched her arms wide.
“早上好,小雨!”妈妈的声音从厨房传来,“早餐准备好了!”
"Good morning, Xiaoyu!" Mom's voice came from the kitchen, "Breakfast is ready!"
Xiaoyu jumped out of bed and ran to the window. Outside was her familiar little town—tree-lined streets, the neighbor's dog that always liked to bark, and the national flag flying on the school playground in the distance. She took a deep breath and caught the scent of grass and earth in the air.
This was Xiaoyu's home, the place she had lived for nine years. She knew every corner so well, could name every tree.
But sometimes, Xiaoyu would wonder: Just how big is the world we live in?
Earth: A Blue Marble
What do you think we would see if we could look down from a place so high up—higher than the tallest mountain, higher than airplanes fly, even higher than the clouds?
The answer is: Our Earth.
Earth is like a giant blue marble, floating in the pitch-black space. Most of its surface is blue because about 71% of Earth's surface is covered by water—that's why astronauts like to call Earth the "blue marble."
If you could stay in space for a whole day and night, flying around Earth really fast, it would take you about 24 hours to get back to where you started. 24 hours—just the length of one day and one night!
Now Xiaoyu understood that Earth wasn't as big as she had imagined. Flying around Earth in an airplane only takes a little over a day. Of course, Earth was still very, very big—too big for her two little legs to ever walk all the way around.
But this is only the beginning of the story. Because as big as Earth might look, when you put it in the context of the entire universe, it's small as a grain of sand.

Visiting Our Star: The Sun
The Solar System Family
One night, Xiaoyu's dad took her to an observatory to see the stars. An observatory is a round building, like a big steamed bun, with a huge telescope inside that can see extremely far away.
“爸爸,那颗最亮的星星是什么?”小雨指着天空中一颗特别明亮的星星问道。
"Dad, what's that brightest star?" Xiaoyu asked, pointing to a particularly bright star in the sky.
Dad smiled and said, "That star? It's called the Sun. It's not just any star—it's our star!"
What is a star? A star is a huge celestial body, like the Sun, that produces light and heat all by itself. The Sun's volume is 1.3 million times that of Earth! If Earth were a small cherry, then the Sun would be as big as a large swimming pool.
The Solar System is a "big family" with the Sun at its center, consisting of the Sun and all the celestial bodies gravitationally attracted to it. In this family, there are eight major planets arranged in order of their distance from the Sun:
```mermaid graph LR Sun["☀️ 太阳
Sun"] Sun --> Mercury["☿️ 水星
Mercury"] Sun --> Venus["♀️ 金星
Venus"] Sun --> Earth["🌍 地球
Earth"] Sun --> Mars["♂️ 火星
Mars"] Sun --> Jupiter["🪐 木星
Jupiter"] Sun --> Saturn["🪐 土星
Saturn"] Sun --> Uranus["🪐 天王星
Uranus"] Sun --> Neptune["🪐 海王星
Neptune"] ```
八大行星分别是:水星、金星、地球、火星、木星、土星、天王星和海王星。它们就像太阳的八个孩子,围绕着太阳不停地旋转,就像小朋友在操场上绕着旗杆跑圈一样。
The eight planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are like the Sun's eight children, revolving around the Sun constantly, just like kids running around a flagpole on the playground.
小雨的神奇望远镜 | Xiaoyu's Magical Telescope
天文台的老师借给小雨一台小小的天文望远镜,让她可以更清楚地观察星星。小雨把望远镜对准了月亮,哇!她看到了月亮的表面有好多好多大大小小的坑坑,这些坑叫做“环形山”。
The teacher at the observatory lent Xiaoyu a small telescope so she could see the stars more clearly. Xiaoyu pointed the telescope at the Moon—wow! She saw lots of big and small craters on the Moon's surface. These craters are called "impact craters."
“这些坑是怎么来的呢?”小雨好奇地问。
"How did these craters get here?" Xiaoyu asked curiously.
“是太空中的小石头和灰尘撞到月亮上形成的,”老师解释道,“太空里有很多很多这样的小天体,它们就像在高速公路上飞驰的汽车,有时候会撞在一起呢!”
"They were formed when little rocks and dust from space crashed into the Moon," the teacher explained. "There are lots of these small celestial bodies in space, like cars racing on a highway, and sometimes they crash into each other!"
小雨听得眼睛都亮了。她突然意识到,自己生活的地球也在太空中不停地旋转,就像一艘巨大的宇宙飞船!
Xiaoyu's eyes lit up as she listened. She suddenly realized that the Earth she lives on is also constantly spinning in space, like a giant spaceship!
地球每秒大约转466米! 在赤道地区,地球的自转速度最快——比高速公路上最快的汽车还要快好多倍!
Earth spins about 466 meters per second! At the equator, Earth rotates fastest—many, many times faster than the fastest car on the highway!
太阳系有多大?| How Big Is the Solar System?
“老师,如果我们想去太阳系里其他星球旅行,需要多长时间呢?”小雨问道。
"Teacher, if we wanted to travel to other planets in the Solar System, how long would it take?" Xiaoyu asked.
老师想了想,说:“如果你坐最快的飞机去最近的星球——火星,需要大约6个月的时间呢!”
The teacher thought for a moment and said, "If you flew on the fastest airplane to the nearest planet—Mars—it would take about 6 months!"
6个月! 那可是半年的时间呢!够小朋友们从春天一直等到秋天了!
Six months! That's half a year! That's enough time for kids to wait from spring all the way to autumn!
“如果去最远的海王星呢?”小雨追问。
"And if we went to the farthest one, Neptune?" Xiaoyu pressed on.
“大概需要……200年吧!”老师笑着说。
"About... 200 years!" the teacher laughed.
小雨倒吸一口凉气:“200年!那得坐多久的飞机啊!”
Xiaoyu sucked in a breath: "200 years! How long would we have to be on the airplane!"
老师解释说:“所以呀,科学家们发明了火箭!火箭飞得比飞机快多了。坐火箭去火星,大约只需要9个月左右。但是去海王星的话,最快的火箭也要飞12年左右呢。”
The teacher explained: "That's why scientists invented rockets! Rockets fly much faster than airplanes. By rocket, it only takes about 9 months to get to Mars. But to Neptune, even the fastest rocket would take about 12 years!"
小雨在心中默默算着:12年,她现在9岁,等她到海王星的时候,就已经21岁了!
Xiaoyu calculated in her head: 12 years—she's 9 now, so by the time she gets to Neptune, she'd already be 21 years old!
原来,太阳系已经这么大了呀! 小雨开始对太空产生了更浓厚的兴趣。
So the Solar System is already this big! Xiaoyu became even more interested in space.
离开太阳系 | Leaving the Solar System
那天晚上回到家,小雨躺在床上,翻来覆去睡不着。她的脑海里一直回想着在天文台看到的景象——那些闪闪发光的星星,那些遥远的星球。
That night when Xiaoyu got home, she lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. The scenes she saw at the observatory kept replaying in her mind—those twinkling stars, those distant planets.
“如果太阳系已经这么大了,那太阳系外面又是什么呢?”她自言自语。
"If the Solar System is already this big, then what's beyond the Solar System?" she asked herself.
这个问题问得真好!因为当我们把视野再扩大一点点,就会发现太阳系在宇宙中,其实也是很小很小的一部分。
