Chapter 1: Finding Shenzhen – The Tiny Dot on the Map
Hey kids, did you know that on the world map, there’s a once-insignificant tiny dot that has now become a shining star? That’s Shenzhen! It’s like a magical seed that grew from a small fishing village into a bustling megacity. Today, let’s play a “Map Treasure Hunt” game together and uncover the mystery of Shenzhen’s transformation. Ready? Let’s start our time-traveling adventure from that tiny dot on the map!
First, please take out your world map (or open the map app on your tablet). We’re going to be little detectives and find Shenzhen step by step. Step 1: Find the huge continent of Asia—it’s in the east of the map, looking like a proud giant bird. Step 2: In eastern Asia, locate China, which resembles a rooster with its head held high. Step 3: In southern China, find Guangdong Province—it looks like a butterfly spreading its wings over the South China Sea. Step 4: In southern Guangdong, near Hong Kong, there’s a tiny mark—that’s Shenzhen! See, it’s just a tiny dot on the map, but that dot later underwent an incredible transformation.
Now, let’s zoom in and see what Shenzhen was really like before 1979. At that time, Shenzhen wasn’t even called “Shenzhen”; its name was “Bao’an,” which means “treasure and peace.” There were no skyscrapers, no crowded streets—only patches of green rice fields, quietly flowing rivers, scattered fishing villages, and simple rural homes. People made a living mainly by farming and fishing. At dawn, roosters crowed at the village entrance, and farmers carried hoes to the fields; at dusk, fishing boats returned loaded with fish, and children chased each other along the ridges. Life was simple and peaceful, like a soothing pastoral poem.
To help you feel that era more vividly, let’s look at some old photos. Photo 1.1, taken in 1978 in Nantou, Shenzhen, shows: vast rice fields stretching to the horizon, with a few farmers transplanting rice seedlings, their straw hats glistening in the sun. Not far away, several low mud-brick houses puffing smoke, with old oxen grazing in front. In the corner of the photo, a small wooden boat is docked—probably used by fishermen. The whole scene is quiet and simple, as if time had slowed down here.
Now look at Photo 1.2, which shows the Lo Wu Bridge area in 1979. Lo Wu Bridge connected Shenzhen and Hong Kong, but back then, only a few bicycles and pedestrians crossed it. On this side of the bridge, there were a couple of two-story buildings surrounded by fields and vegetable plots; on the other side, Hong Kong’s already bustling area with skyscrapers. This stark contrast was like a border between two worlds: one side peaceful countryside, the other a busy city.
In these old photos, you can also spot many interesting details: children wearing patched clothes playing in the mud; women washing clothes by the river, the sound of wooden clubs echoing; a small shop with just a counter selling candy and matches. There were no cell phones or internet back then, but people’s smiles were genuine, and neighbors helped each other like family.
So, what exactly happened in 1979 that triggered Shenzhen’s dramatic change? That leads us to an important grandpa—Deng Xiaoping. He put forward a great idea: establish an “economic special zone” in southern China, like a “test field” to try new economic policies and attract foreign investment and technology. Shenzhen was chosen as the first special zone! From then on, waves of builders from all over the country poured in, bringing dreams and sweat to construct buildings, roads, and factories. The name changed from “Bao’an” to “Shenzhen,” where “zhen” means a path through fields, symbolizing a development road emerging from the countryside.
In just a few decades, Shenzhen grew like a magical fast-growing seed. The endless rice fields of the past are now replaced by skyscrapers; the small fishing boats have become underground subways and airplanes in the sky; the muddy village paths have turned into wide roads and sea-crossing bridges. Let’s use comparison images to feel this change vividly. Image 1.3 shows a before-and-after of the same location—Luohu, Shenzhen: on the left is the 1980 scene with only low houses and fields; on the right is the 2023 scene with the Ping An Finance Centre and other skyscrapers towering into the clouds, busy streets, and twinkling neon lights. The speed of this change is extremely rare in the history of human cities!
Numbers tell the story: In 1979, Shenzhen’s population was only about 300,000—the size of a small town; today, Shenzhen’s permanent population exceeds 17 million, more than many countries! In 1979, Shenzhen’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) was almost negligible; in 2023, Shenzhen’s GDP surpassed 3 trillion yuan, equivalent to the economic output of a medium-sized province. From “fishing village” to “megacity,” Shenzhen achieved this in just over forty years—a real-life “miracle”!
Now, it’s your turn to get hands-on! The task of this chapter is: draw your own “Past Shenzhen vs. Present Shenzhen” comparison image. This isn’t just a drawing; it’s your way of talking to history. With your paintbrush, you can recreate that peaceful fishing village or portray that brilliant future. Ready? Let’s take it step by step.
Step 1: Gather Inspiration Look for some old and current photos of Shenzhen for reference. You can find history books at the library or search online for “Shenzhen old photos 1979” and “Shenzhen aerial view today.” Pay attention to details: old buildings, transportation, people’s clothing; current buildings, streets, greenery. If you have a chance to visit Shenzhen, be sure to go to the history museum (like the Shenzhen Museum) to see real artifacts and videos.
Step 2: Draw “Past Shenzhen” Take a large sheet of paper and divide it into left and right halves. On the left, draw Shenzhen before 1979. Think: what color were the rice fields? What did the fishing boats look like? Were the village houses flat
