War is the most intense form of conflict between human societies. When矛盾(conflicts)between nations or ethnic groups cannot be resolved through negotiation, diplomacy, or peaceful means, war may erupt. In war, all parties mobilize their military forces, weapons, and all available resources, attempting to defeat their opponents through force of arms to achieve their own goals.
World War II (WWII) was the largest and most impactful war in human history. This war broke out on September 1, 1939, and ended on September 2, 1945, lasting a full six years. The war swept across all six continents, involving more than 60 countries and directly or indirectly affecting 2 billion people. Given that the world's total population at that time was only about 2.5 billion, this means that 4 out of every 5 people on Earth was affected by this war.
The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that lasted from 1929 to about 1939. During this period, factories closed, workers lost their jobs, farmers lost their land, and banks went bankrupt. Germany's unemployment rate reached 30% in 1932—out of every three people looking for work, one couldn't find it.
In the chaos of the Great Depression, three ambitious leaders came to power.
Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) was born in Austria to a German family. He served as a soldier in World War I. After the war, he joined the German National Socialist Workers' Party (Nazi Party) and attempted a coup in 1923, which failed. In 1933, Hitler became Chancellor of Germany through legal elections and political maneuvering. He promised the German people that he would restore Germany's glory, reclaim territories lost in World War I, and ensure that every German had a job and bread.
Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) was Italy's fascist dictator. He seized power in 1922 through the "March on Rome" and established a totalitarian regime. Mussolini declared that he would restore the glory of the ancient Roman Empire and build a vast empire spanning the Mediterranean.
Emperor Hirohito (1901-1989) of Japan was a constitutional monarch, but real power lay with the military. Under the military's dominance, Japan embarked on a path of militarism. Japan is an island nation poor in resources, and the military believed that Japan needed to expand outward, seizing resources and territory from China and Southeast Asia to ensure Japan's survival and development.
After World War I (1914-1918), the victorious nations signed the Treaty of Versailles with Germany at the Palace of Versailles in France. This treaty was extremely harsh on Germany: Germany lost 13% of its territory, 10% of its population, all its overseas colonies, and had to pay war reparations of 132 billion gold marks (equivalent to about $500 billion today).
Germans generally viewed this treaty as unjust and humiliating. Hitler exploited this nationalist sentiment, gaining widespread support under the banner of "breaking the shackles of Versailles." His propaganda convinced Germans that it was time to overthrow this unfair treaty and make Germany great again.
On September 1, 1939, at 5:45 AM, German forces crossed the border and launched a full-scale invasion of Poland. This invasion came fast and furious—Germany deployed 1.5 million troops, 2,500 tanks, 2,300 aircraft, and 10,000 artillery pieces. Although the Polish army had 1 million soldiers and put up fierce resistance, against Germany's Blitzkrieg (lightning war) tactics, resistance lasted less than a month.
Blitzkrieg (闪电战) was Germany's innovative military tactic. In simple terms, it involved first using aircraft to bomb enemy airfields, railways, bridges, and command centers, destroying enemy communications and supply lines. Then, large numbers of tanks and motorized infantry would rapidly advance, encircling and dividing enemy forces before they could react. Finally, infantry units would mop up surrounded enemy forces. This tactic was like a choreographed dance, with different branches of the military working closely together to paralyze enemy resistance as quickly as possible.
On September 3, Britain and France issued an ultimatum to Germany, demanding German withdrawal. When Germany refused, Britain and France declared war on Germany. World War II had officially begun!
The countries fighting in World War II were divided into two major camps: the Allies and the Axis Powers.
The name Axis Powers originated from the Berlin-Rome Axis Agreement signed by Germany and Italy in 1936. The Axis Powers initially consisted of three nations:
Later, several European countries such as Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Finland, as well as Thailand and other Asian countries, joined the Axis. However, most of these countries joined under coercion or out of their own interests, and were not core members.
The Allies were a gradually expanding alliance that eventually included most countries in the world. The four most important nations were called the "Four Major Allies":
The United States officially entered the war only after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, having maintained neutrality until then. However, in the early stages of the war, Britain and the Soviet Union were already fighting Germany and its allies. China's War of Resistanc
