This is a book about the geography of China—about the land beneath our feet, the mountains that shape our weather, the rivers that nourish our fields, and the plateaus that watch over our plains. But before we begin exploring the fascinating details, let's start with something fundamental: where exactly is China located on this planet we call home? Understanding China's geographic position is like learning the address of a great house—once you know where it stands, you can begin to appreciate why its rooms are arranged as they are, why some corners are warm while others are cold, and why the view from each window tells a different story.
When we talk about a country's geographic position, we often begin with its location relative to the major divisions of our planet. China sits in the Eastern Hemisphere—that's the half of the Earth east of the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) that runs through Greenwich, London. More specifically, China is found in the Eastern Hemisphere, which means when it's noon in Beijing, it's still early morning in London or Madrid. This position shapes many aspects of Chinese life, from business hours to cultural exchanges with European countries.
China is also entirely situated in the Northern Hemisphere. The equator divides our planet into north and south, and China lies completely above this line. The southernmost point of China, the Zengmu Ansha (曾母暗沙) in the South China Sea, sits at approximately 4° north latitude, which means the entire country enjoys the relative warmth and seasonal patterns of the Northern Hemisphere. This shared hemisphere with Europe, North America, and much of Asia means that China experiences the same general seasonal patterns—summer days are long, winter days are short, and the cycle of four seasons brings its familiar rhythm of planting and harvest to the land.
The phrase "Eastern Asia" places China within one of the world's most diverse and historically significant regions. Asia, the largest and most populous continent, contains an astonishing variety of landscapes, cultures, and climates. As a major country in Eastern Asia, China shares borders with 14 nations, making it one of the countries with the most neighbors in the world. Its land borders stretch over 22,000 kilometers, weaving through high mountains, vast deserts, dense forests, and sprawling grasslands. This extensive border has shaped Chinese history profoundly—trade routes like the Silk Road connected China with the West, military campaigns crossed mountain passes, and countless cultural exchanges enriched both China and its neighbors.
Facing the Pacific Ocean to the east, China possesses a mainland coastline stretching over 18,000 kilometers. The Pacific, the world's largest and deepest ocean, meets China along its eastern edge. This maritime position has given China a distinctive oceanic character. Scattered along this long coastline are numerous excellent ports—Dalian, Tianjin, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and many others—each like a pearl strung along the coastal necklace, connecting China with trade partners across the globe. The monsoons from the Pacific bring abundant rainfall to irrigate the farmlands of eastern China; Pacific fish stocks have fed coastal fishing communities for millennia; and Pacific waves carry dreams of maritime strength and oceanic exploration.
If the hemispheric position tells us which half of the Earth China occupies, then its precise coordinates—latitude and longitude—give us the exact address. Geographic coordinates are like the address system of our planet: longitude tells us the east-west position, while latitude tells us the north-south position. The range of latitudes and longitudes that China spans is remarkable, among the largest in the world.
Let's start with the north-south dimension—latitude. China's northernmost point lies on the main channel center line of the Heilongjiang River, north of Mohe in Heilongjiang Province, at approximately 53°33' north latitude. This place has a romantic name: "Beiji Village" (北极村), the only place in China where you can observe the aurora borealis. Around the summer solstice, due to the long days and short nights, this area experiences the remarkable phenomenon called "white nights"—even in the deep of night, the sky retains a pale glow, and stars seem reluctant to appear. When winter arrives at the solstice, the longest night stretches to nearly 17 hours, a truly endless darkness.
China's southernmost point is the Zengmu Ansha in the Nansha Islands of the South China Sea, situated at approximately 3°52' north latitude. This is very close to the equator, belonging to the tropical zone where temperatures remain high and rainfall abundant year-round. Zengmu Ansha is actually a submerged coral reef, with its shallowest point about 17 meters below the water's surface, so people cannot step directly onto this land. Nevertheless, it proudly holds the sacred position of China's southernmost point. From Beiji Village to Zengmu Ansha, China spans nearly 50 degrees of latitude. Let me put that in perspective: the southern half of China shares roughly the same latitude as India, while the northern half reaches as far north as Sweden and Finland in Scandinavia.
This vast latitudinal span creates a wonderfully diverse range of climate types. In the Nansha Islands where Zengmu Ansha is located, coconut palms sway gently and tropical fish dart among coral reefs; people there might never need a winter coat in their entire lives. Meanwhile, in Beiji Village near Mohe, winter temperatures can plunge below minus 40 degrees Celsius, and exhaled breath instantly freezes into frost on eyebrows and beards. At the same moment, northern China might be blanketed in white, while southern regions remain warm as spring. This difference has created unique spectacles—northerners traveling south to see snow, while southerners head north to enjoy the sea. It has also shaped enormous variations in Chinese agriculture as you travel from south to north—Hainan Island can grow three crops of rice annually, while the black soil lands of the Northeast can only manage one harvest per year.
