Chapter 1: The Magical Focus Elf
Section 1: Attention That Floats Away
On Monday morning, sunlight crept through the curtain and landed softly on Youyou's pillow. Before the alarm went off, Youyou was already awake. Today was Monday — her favorite day, "Story Sharing Day." During the class meeting in the morning, every child could stand at the podium and tell the class an interesting story from their own experience. Youyou had been preparing for this for a long time. She wanted to tell everyone about the time she went to the beach with Dad and caught little crabs.
Youyou bounced out of bed, quickly put on her school uniform, and rushed to the bathroom to wash up. She carefully fixed her braids in front of the mirror and smiled at her reflection. "I must do well today!" she told her mirror self.
But when Youyou walked into the classroom with her backpack and sat at her desk, she noticed a little yellow bird hopping on a branch outside the window. The bird's feathers sparkled in the sunlight, like a small golden leaf. Youyou stared at it for a while, then suddenly remembered something — last week's science class, when Teacher Xiaosong said that birds are the descendants of dinosaurs. "Really?" Youyou thought to herself. "Could that little bird's ancestor really be a big dinosaur? I wonder if it could breathe fire…"
Just as Youyou was lost in the wonderful fantasy of "little bird and dinosaur," her thoughts drifted farther and farther away — she seemed to see the little bird growing bigger and bigger, until it became a fire-breathing dinosaur flying freely across the sky…
"Youyou! Youyou!" A voice pulled her back from her daydream.
Youyou snapped back to reality and found her teacher, Ms. Lily, standing beside the podium, looking at her with a warm smile. "Youyou, can you tell me, where were we in the lesson just now?"
Youyou's face turned bright red. She stammered and couldn't say a single word. She hadn't heard a single thing the teacher was saying. "Um… um…" She lowered her head, her voice as tiny as a mosquito's buzz.
Ms. Lily didn't scold her. She simply said gently, "Youyou, come see the teacher after class, okay?"
When the bell rang, Youyou walked toward the podium with her head down, feeling both embarrassed and wronged. She was actually very smart — she always ranked in the top ten in her class on every test. But she just couldn't control herself — during class, all kinds of thoughts kept popping into her head, like a flock of little butterflies fluttering around inside her heart, scattering her attention in every direction.
In Youyou's heart, a little voice asked: "Why is it sometimes hard for me to focus? What exactly is attention?"
This was a question she had wanted to ask for a very long time.

Section 2: The Little Helper Inside Your Brain
After school, Youyou threw her backpack onto the bed and flopped onto her fluffy teddy bear cushion. She buried her face in the cushion and let out a gloomy sigh.
"Youyou — Youyou — where are you —" Mom's voice called from the living room.
"I'm in my room —" Youyou replied without energy.
Mom pushed open the door and walked in. Seeing Youyou lying on the bed like a deflated balloon, she couldn't help but laugh. "What's wrong, our little Youyou? Who made you unhappy?"
Youyou told Mom about what happened in class today. As she talked, tears welled up in her eyes. "Mom, I do want to listen carefully. But my brain always… always gets away on its own…"
Mom sat down on the edge of the bed and gently stroked Youyou's hair. "Youyou, have you ever heard of 'focus'?"
Youyou shook her head.
Mom smiled and said, "There's a very magical little helper living inside our heads, and its name is 'Focus.' Don't underestimate it! This little helper is amazing — it's like a little police officer sent by our brain. It helps us decide, among all the jumbled information in our head, where exactly our attention should go."
Youyou's eyes widened. "There are lots of things in my brain?"
Mom nodded, pointing to Youyou's head. "Of course! Look, right now you're sitting in your room. Your ears can hear birds chirping outside the window, your nose can smell the braised pork wafting from the kitchen, your eyes can see the blue sky through the window, and your fingers feel how soft the teddy bear cushion is — so much information flooding into your brain all at once! If nobody helped sort it all out, your brain would be a complete mess!"
Youyou thought for a moment and said, "So focus is what helps my brain make decisions — what should I listen to first, what should I look at first, what should I think about first?"
"That's right!" Mom gave her a thumbs up. "Focus is like the commander of your brain. It lines up all the information and says, 'Okay, right now the most important thing to pay attention to is this! The rest can wait.' That way, we can concentrate all our energy on one thing and do it well."
Youyou's eyes gradually brightened. Then she asked, "But Mom, why does my focus always 'run away'? Sometimes I really want to pay attention in class, but after a while, my mind wanders…"
Mom was just about to answer when — the room's light flickered twice!
Youyou and Mom both froze.
Then, something incredible happened — a tiny speck of light appeared in the middle of the room. It grew brighter and brighter, until *puff!* it transformed into a palm-sized little elf!
This little elf glowed with a soft golden light. She wore a pointy little hat with a sparkling star on top. Her eyes were big and round, like two glowing sapphires. Most interesting of all, she had a pair of translucent dragonfly-like wings on her back. When her wings fluttered, they made a "ding-a-ling" sound — just like a tiny wind chime.
"Wow —!!" Youyou shrieked, her eyes as wide as saucers.
The little elf spun in the air and landed on Youyou's desk, saying in a clear, crisp voice:
"Hello there, Youyou! My name is Dingding, and I'm a Focus Elf! I heard your question, so I came especiall
