When we talk about artificial intelligence, the term "Agent" frequently appears, but what exactly is an Agent? How does it differ from ordinary AI programs? This question, while seemingly simple, touches on the most core concept evolution in the field of artificial intelligence. Essentially, an Agent is an intelligent system capable of autonomously perceiving its environment, making decisions, and executing actions. Unlike traditional programs, Agents possess a degree of autonomy—they don't require humans to step-by-step instruct them on what to do; instead, they can autonomously plan action paths based on environmental changes.
The key to understanding the concept of an Agent lies in grasping three core elements: Perception, Decision-making, and Action. These three elements form the basic architecture of an Agent and serve as important criteria for distinguishing Agents from other forms of artificial intelligence. Perception refers to the Agent's ability to acquire environmental information, which can be text input, image recognition, voice reception, or even sensor data. Decision-making is the process by which the Agent reasons and judges based on perceived information—this is the core manifestation of an Agent's intelligence. Action is the process by which the Agent transforms decisions into concrete executions, which might be generating text, sending an instruction, controlling a robot, or calling an external API.
To understand these three elements more intuitively, we can compare an Agent to an employee in a company. When an employee works, they receive tasks assigned by their supervisor (perception), think about how to complete these tasks and make plans (decision-making), and then take action to accomplish them (action). An excellent employee not only completes explicitly instructed tasks but also proactively identifies problems, offers suggestions, and handles unexpected situations. Similarly, an outstanding Agent should possess similar initiative—it can not only execute explicitly required tasks but also understand the user's true intent and independently find solutions when encountering problems.
To understand today's AI Agents, we must trace back through the long history of artificial intelligence development. In 1950, Alan Turing published the groundbreaking paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," proposing the famous "Turing Test" concept. The core idea of the Turing Test is: if a human judge cannot distinguish whether they are conversing with a human or a machine, then that machine can be considered intelligent. This seemingly simple test actually pointed the way for AI development—machine intelligence should be reflected in the ability to naturally interact with humans.
In the era when the Turing Test was proposed, AI research primarily employed Symbolic AI methods. Symbolic AI holds that intelligence can be achieved through symbol manipulation—just as humans think through concepts and logic. This approach gave rise to a series of Expert Systems, which encoded human expert knowledge into rules and then performed reasoning and decision-making based on these rules. Typical applications of expert systems include medical diagnosis, financial analysis, and industrial control domains; they excelled in specific areas but lacked true learning ability and generalization capability.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Machine Learning gradually became the mainstream paradigm in AI research. Unlike symbolic AI, machine learning emphasizes automatically learning patterns and rules from data rather than relying on manually encoded rules. This shift was profound—it meant that AI systems could improve their capabilities through training, without human programmers constantly manually updating rules.
The development of machine learning went through several important stages. First came Supervised Learning, where systems learn correspondences between inputs and outputs to make predictions. Typical applications include image classification, speech recognition, and many tasks in natural language processing. This was followed by Unsupervised Learning, where systems learn hidden structures and patterns from unlabeled data, with clustering and dimensionality reduction as typical applications. In recent years, Reinforcement Learning has also achieved major breakthroughs, with AlphaGo defeating human Go champions being a outstanding achievement of reinforcement learning.
However, even the most advanced machine learning models were for a long time limited to specific tasks. An image classification model trained for classification could only classify images and could not perform text generation or speech recognition. This "Narrow AI" state led many to question: Is truly general artificial intelligence possible?
GPT(Generative Pre-trained Transformer)、BERT、Claude等模型的相继问世,彻底改变了人们对人工智能可能性的认知。
In the 2020s, the AI field ushered in a true revolution—the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs). The successive debut of models like GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), BERT, and Claude completely changed people's perceptions of what artificial intelligence could achieve. These models are called "large" because they have hundreds of billions or even trillions of parameters, and through pre-training on massive amounts of text data, they have acquired astonishing language comprehension and generation capabilities.
The core innovation of large language models lies in the "pre-training + fine-tuning" paradigm. During pre-training, models learn general language patterns—grammar, semantics, common sense, and even a certain degree of world knowledge—from internet-scale text corpora. This large-scale pre-training endows the model with powerful "general knowledge" capabilities, enabling it to understand and generate text on various topics. Subsequently, through fine-tuning techniques, models can be specifically tra
