Let's start with a question: Have you ever considered that your eyes never truly "clock out" even when you fall asleep? The next morning, when the first ray of sunlight slips through the curtains, you stretch, reach for your phone on the pillow—and the moment you unlock the screen, your eyes officially start their shift.
Does your screen show "7:30" or "٧:٣٠"? Is your WeChat icon green or blue? Does it have a cute little ear? These seemingly tiny differences are actually carefully arranged by different type designers. You may never have consciously "looked at" these words, but your eyes are interacting with them every single moment.
This is what we're going to talk about today—fonts. Not the boring kind of "write nicely" lecture, but a super interesting, surprising new world.
You're Surrounded by Typography
Imagine an ordinary day.
At 7:30 AM, your phone alarm goes off. The time displayed uses a typeface called "sans-serif"—no extra little tails, clean and crisp, easy to read at a glance. You groggily check the time and roll over to sleep some more.
At 7:45, the alarm rings again. This time you really get up, wash up, and walk to the kitchen to grab a carton of milk. The box says "Pure Milk" in round, full type—warm and trustworthy.
At 8:00, you board the bus to school. Through the window, various shop signs flash by—"Lanzhou Ramen," "Yidiandian," "UNIQLO," "Starbucks." Each store's name is written in a different typeface—some bold and powerful, some thin and elegant, some lively and playful. These fonts are like the store's face, instantly telling you the "personality" of the shop.
Arriving at school, you open your textbook. "People's Education Press" on the Chinese textbook is dignified and formal. The formulas in the math book use a special math typeface, where every symbol is precisely rendered. You also notice that the main text uses "Song typeface," with varying stroke widths and a touch of classical elegance.
At noon, you and your classmates go to the cafeteria for lunch. The menu blackboard is written in chalk—those crooked handwritten characters actually have a unique sense of warmth. After eating, you buy a drink at the convenience store. "Nongfu Spring" on the bottle uses a calligraphy style, with smooth and powerful strokes, evoking images of nature's mountains and waters.
During third period in the afternoon, you secretly glance at your phone. WeChat, Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Taobao—each APP has its own unique icon and typeface design, competing for attention on the tiny phone screen, all to grab your attention in the first second after unlocking.
On the way home from school, you pass a milk tea shop. The cup the staff hands you says "520ml"—doesn't that number 5 look especially cute? That's not randomly chosen; the designer specifically selected this font to make even numbers look adorable.
At night, you lie in bed scrolling through your phone. Countless texts, images, and videos flow across the screen. Every frame, every button, every comment involves typography. The last thing you see before closing your eyes is the time displayed in the upper right corner of your phone—typography again.
The day ends. Have you calculated how many different typefaces you've interacted with today?
The answer might surprise you—anywhere from dozens to over a hundred different typefaces.
What is Typography?
After all this talking, you might ask: What exactly is "typography"?
Let's clarify a few easily confused concepts first.
字体(Typeface/Font)——这是最常说的词。
Typeface (or Font) — This is the most commonly used term. In daily life, people often use "font" and "character shape" interchangeably. But strictly speaking, a typeface refers to a complete style of letter design, such as "Song," "Heiti," "Kaiti," "Arial," "Times New Roman," etc. Each typeface has its own "personality" and "temperament."
字形(Glyph/Character)——指的是一个具体的字符的样子。
Glyph — Refers to the appearance of a specific character. For example, the letter "A" looks different in different typefaces. In Arial, both legs of the A are the same length; in Georgia, the left leg is slightly shorter, with a little "foot."
Typography — This is a professional term in the field of type design, referring to how text is arranged and combined—including which typeface to choose, font size, line spacing, letter spacing, paragraph spacing, and more. Whether a book is well-typeset depends not just on which typeface is used, but more importantly, how these typefaces are combined.
Here's an analogy. If we compare a book to a stage performance:
- **Typeface** is like the actors. Different actors have different temperaments—some are sunny and handsome, some are mature and steady, some are quirky and clever.
- **Glyph** is like the actors' appearance. Even when playing "Lin Daiyu," different actors have different costumes and makeup.
- **Typography** is like the director. Which actors go on stage, how they position themselves, where the lights shine, how the dialogue coordinates—these are all questions the director must consider.
So, type design is the art and science of creating typefaces. And typography is the art of using these typefaces to make information clearer, more beautiful, and more effective.
The Revolution Started by the World's First "Typewriter"
Before you complain that a certain font is "ugly" or "unreadable," you might find it hard to imagine how long and winding the history of typography has been to reach where it is today. Let's take a journey through time, back more than four hundred years.
In 1440, in Mainz, Germany, a goldsmith named Johannes Gutenberg was tinkering with a strange little device—a machine capable of mass-printing books. He cast complete letter molds in metal, then used these molds to arrange letters one by one into words, lines, and paragraphs, finally printing them onto paper with ink and pressure.
