Above the Abacus: The Light of Ancient Computational Wisdom
Let us turn back the clock to approximately 2400 BCE on the Mesopotamian plain. At that time, humans had already mastered the secrets of agriculture and animal husbandry, but with that came a sweet burden: how to record and calculate increasingly abundant wealth? The number of cattle and sheep, the yield of grain, the collection of taxes—all of these required accurate measurement. On clay tablets, ancient scribes used reed pens to carve the earliest numerical symbols, and these symbols gradually evolved into the first computing aids in human history.
The birth of the abacus represents the pinnacle of this pursuit. While historians still debate the exact origin of the abacus, there is no doubt that it embodies a revolutionary computational concept. The abacus was not merely a simple counting tool; it embodied the essence of positional notation—using different positions to represent different orders of magnitude. The Babylonians, Chinese, Romans, and Greeks each developed their own abacus systems. Although these systems differed in form, they all followed the same core principle: using physical objects to represent abstract numbers, and using spatial positions to indicate the magnitude of values.
Take the Chinese abacus as an example. It typically consists of a frame, beads, and a horizontal beam dividing the upper and lower sections. The two beads on the upper deck each represent five, while the four beads on the lower deck each represent one. Calculations are performed by moving the beads to different positions. This clever design allowed even illiterate people to perform complex arithmetic operations. In an era without electronic calculators, the abacus was an indispensable tool for business activities and national financial management. Merchants, bankers, and government officials in China, Japan, and Russia all relied on the abacus for daily computational tasks. Until the mid-20th century, the abacus remained the primary computing tool in many Asian countries, its efficiency and accuracy amazing many Western observers.
However, the abacus had its inherent limitations. First, computational speed depended entirely on the operator's proficiency. A highly skilled abacus master could match early mechanical calculators, but developing such skill required extensive time and practice. Second, the abacus could not store computational processes—each calculation had to start from scratch, with no "memory" function. These limitations foreshadowed humanity's need for a new computational paradigm, one that could automatically execute calculations and store intermediate results.
The road from the abacus to modern computers was long and tortuous, but the core idea embodied in the abacus—using mechanical devices to perform calculations—laid the foundation for all subsequent computing tools. When we operate quantum computers today, perhaps we should remember that the initial spark of this idea was kindled when ancient scribes carved the first numerical symbols on clay tablets.

The Heart of Mechanism: Pascal and Leibniz's Dreams of Automatic Calculation
17th-century Europe was in the midst of a scientific revolution. The invention of the telescope allowed humans to see farther into the stars, the invention of the microscope allowed humans to discover smaller worlds, and the development of mathematics gave humanity a precise language to describe nature. Against this backdrop, two great thinkers—Blaise Pascal and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz—began contemplating a common question: Could a machine be built that could automatically perform calculations?
Pascal's calculator (Pascaline) was born in 1642, when Pascal was only 19 years old. His father was a tax official who had to process vast amounts of tax calculations every day. Young Pascal, out of love for his father, began developing a machine that could automatically perform addition and subtraction. The working principle of the Pascaline was based on gear and ratchet mechanisms: each gear represented one digit, and when the gear of a lower digit completed one full rotation, it would drive the gear of the next higher digit to rotate one position, thereby implementing the carry function. Although this machine was bulky, expensive, and could only perform addition and subtraction, it demonstrated the feasibility of mechanical devices executing mathematical operations.
Leibniz went further than Pascal. His "Stepped Reckoner" could not only perform addition and subtraction but also multiplication and division—an impressive achievement at the time. More importantly, Leibniz proposed the concept of the binary system. Although his mechanical calculator had many implementation problems and never became a practical tool, his research on binary mathematics provided an important theoretical foundation for later computer design. Binary—the system of representing all values using only the two digits 0 and 1—became one of the cornerstones of modern computers.
However, the development of mechanical calculators faced a fundamental bottleneck: the speed and precision of mechanical movement were constrained by the laws of physics. Gear wear, spring fatigue, temperature changes—all of these factors
