What is Leadership? Everyone Can Be a Leader!
That was the first day of the third grade, and the sunlight outside the window flowed into the classroom like golden honey, coating every desk and chair with a warm, golden glow. Xingxing sat by the window—a little boy with a round face and sparkling eyes whose favorite thing was asking "why." His little head was always full of all kinds of questions, as numerous as the stars in the sky.
This morning, their class teacher, Ms. Chen, stood at the podium with a mysterious smile on her face. Her hair was short and fluffy like a mushroom, and there was always a warm gleam in her eyes. The students all called her "Little Sun Teacher" because when she smiled, the classroom seemed to light up instantly.
"Class," Ms. Chen clapped her hands lightly, her voice clear as spring wind chimes, "in two weeks, our long-awaited spring outing will finally arrive! But this time, our class gets to decide where to go all by ourselves. Can you do it?"
"We can!" The students answered in unison, their voices as loud as firecrackers.
Xingxing sat in his seat with excitement, his little body straight as a pole, his eyes shining like two little light bulbs. He loved spring outings more than anything! Last year, the whole class went to a strawberry farm, and Xingxing personally picked a whole basket of bright red strawberries. The sweet taste still lingered in his memory.
But the problem appeared almost immediately.
"I want to go to the park!" Xiaomei was the first to raise her hand—she was the sports star of the class, always winning first place in sprint races. "The park has a huge lawn where we can have picnics and play soccer!"
"No no no," Xiao Jie pushed up his little glasses and shook his head. "The museum is more interesting! We can see dinosaur fossils and ancient treasures, and learn so much knowledge!"
"What's so great about that?" Little Fatty pouted, his round face full of dissatisfaction. "I want to watch a movie! That latest sci-fi blockbuster, it's so cool! I want to see big dinosaurs running out of the screen!"
Students chimed in, one after another, and the classroom instantly became bustling. Some supported going to the park, others insisted on the museum, and still others shouted about watching a movie. Their voices grew louder and louder, like a swarm of buzzing bees, with nobody able to convince anyone else.
Xingxing sat in his seat, watching the bustling scene before him, feeling a bit anxious inside. He wanted to help everyone figure things out, but there were so many people and everyone's ideas were different. What should they do? He propped his chin in his hands, his little head spinning rapidly, yet he simply couldn't come up with a good idea.
"Teacher teacher! I have an idea!" Just then, a voice came from the back of the classroom. The students all turned their heads to look—only to see a little girl with a ponytail standing up. Her name was Qiqi, known as the class's little "clever girl," always able to come up with ideas that others couldn't think of.
"I think we should vote!" Qiqi blinked her eyes triumphantly. "The minority follows the majority—this is the fairest way!"
"Great idea!" Xiaomei immediately agreed.
"Hmm..." Xiao Jie pushed up his glasses, looking thoughtful. "Voting is pretty fair..."
But Little Fatty frowned: "If we vote, there will definitely be few people who want to watch a movie, so won't our suggestion be ignored?" He scratched his head, looking aggrieved.
The voting idea sounded fair, but Xingxing always felt something wasn't quite right. If the minority's ideas were always ignored, wouldn't they feel sad? But if they didn't vote, how would they decide? Xingxing's little brow furrowed even tighter.
Just then, Ms. Chen gently laughed. Her laughter was like a gentle spring breeze, dispersing the tense atmosphere in the classroom. "Students, you've all shared your own ideas, and that's wonderful!" she said. "However, before making a decision, I want to tell you all a story. This story is about a little ant."
"A story?" The students' attention was instantly captured. Having a story during class discussion was so interesting! Everyone sat up straight, their eyes shining as they looked at Ms. Chen, their ears perked up high, afraid to miss a single word.
Xingxing also widened his eyes—he loved listening to stories the most. What story would Ms. Chen tell? About little ants... could it be the story about little ants moving big watermelons? He waited curiously, the little question marks in his heart starting to pop up again.
Ms. Chen drew a little ant on the blackboard. That little ant had a round head, thin antennae, and six strong little legs. Although it was just a simple sketch of a little ant, under Ms. Chen's brush, it looked so spirited, as if it was about to go do some great and mighty deed.
"Long, long ago, at the edge of the forest lived a group of little ants," Ms. Chen's voice became soft and mysterious, as if telling an ancient secret. "Next to these ants' anthill stood a big tree, and every summer, the tree was full of sweet fruits. The ants would collect the fruits and store them in underground warehouses, so when the cold winter came, they wouldn't have to worry about food."
Xingxing was completely captivated, and a picture formed in his little mind: a group of little ants bustling around a big tree, their antennae touching each other as if saying hello. What a warm scene!
"But," Ms. Chen turned the tables, "one summer, something terrible happened."
The classroom was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. All the students held their breath, staring intently at Ms. Chen.
"That summer was especially, especially hot. The blazing sun was like a giant fireball, baking the earth until cracks appeared in the ground." As Ms. Chen spoke, she drew a winding crack on the blackboard. "The stream dried up, the grass withered, and even the fruits on that big tree became much, much scarcer than usual."
"Chirp—chirp—" Little Fatty mimicked the sound of cicadas, whispering, "So hot!"
The students all laughed, and the tense atmosphere slightly eased.
