Little Ink's First Brush
In the depths of the old town district, there lies a cobblestone alley forgotten by time. At the end of this lane stands a three-story old house, its red brick walls covered with ivy, and wisps of炊烟 occasionally drifting from its chimney. The attic window of this house is always veiled in a layer of dust, like a sleeping eye that never easily reveals its secrets to outsiders.
This house is Little Ink's home.
Little Ink is eight years old, a thin and small boy. His hair is pitch black and shiny, as if dyed with ink. His mother always jokes that he must have been reborn from ink, which is why they named him "Little Ink." Little Ink has big, round eyes, and his grape-black pupils always shimmer with curiosity. His favorite thing to do is explore every corner of this old house, searching for treasures that adults have forgotten in various nooks and crannies.
This particular weekend afternoon, the sky was overcast, like a massive piece of gray silk gently draped over the city. His mother was going to a friend's gathering, and his father was huddled in his study working on the computer. They told Little Ink he could go play in the attic by himself, as long as he didn't mess up the old boxes up there.
"Attic exploration? That's my specialty!" Little Ink clenched his small fist excitedly.
He scurried up the wooden staircase leading to the attic, each step causing the old floorboards to creak, as if the old house were greeting him in its own way. The attic door was a heavy double door, painted dark brown, with two ancient brass handles that felt ice-cold to the touch.
Little Ink took a deep breath and pushed the door open.
The attic was filled with a vintage scent—mixed with wood, cloth, and old books, somewhat similar to the mothball smell in grandma's wardrobe, but not quite the same. Little Ink pulled the string of the old lamp, and dim yellowish light gradually illuminated the cluttered space.
The attic was vast, much larger than Little Ink had imagined. In one corner stood stacks of old newspapers—his mother said his grandfather had collected them when he was young, and now they've become part of history. Against the wall stood a dusty old dressing table with a slightly tarnished mirror. There were also several old chairs, an antique sewing machine, a few large wooden crates, and countless unidentified objects covered with cloth.
Little Ink wandered among these treasures, occasionally crouching down to examine an item closely before hopping up to check out the next one. His small hands traced over old photographs, yellowed notebooks, and boxes of rusty buttons. This was truly the world's best playground!
Just as he was about to explore the entire attic, his gaze was drawn to a large wooden crate in the corner. This box was different from the others—it was made of deep red wood, with peculiar patterns carved into its surface. Those patterns curved and twisted, like flowing water, or wisps of smoke, or some kind of mysterious symbols. Little Ink had never seen such an unusual box before.
He crouched down and gently brushed away the dust from the box. As the dust cleared, those carved patterns became increasingly distinct. Little Ink discovered in amazement that those patterns were three spirals—one red, one blue, and one yellow. The three spirals intertwined with each other, extending from the lid of the box all the way to its bottom, like three inseparable rainbow serpents.
"What on earth is this?" Little Ink murmured to himself, his voice carrying a hint of reverence.
His hand reached out toward the box's lid of its own accord. The very instant his fingertips just touched the wood—
Click.
The box opened by itself.
Little Ink was so startled he nearly fell to the ground. He quickly stepped back a couple of paces, his eyes wide open, unsure whether to get closer. But curiosity ultimately triumphed over fear, and he carefully peeked into the box.
The box was empty save for a deep blue velvet cloth lying quietly inside. Resting atop the velvet was something—a paintbrush.
No, wait. This wasn't just an ordinary paintbrush.
Little Ink carefully picked up the brush. This paintbrush was more beautiful than any brush he had ever seen. The handle was made of some kind of dark wood, smooth and warm to the touch, as if countless hands had held it before. Three spirals identical to those on the box were carved into the handle. At the top of the handle was a small gemstone, and its color was peculiar—it seemed to shift constantly between red, blue, and yellow.
The brush's bristles were made of some material he had never encountered before—soft as clouds, yet with a strange sheen that glittered under the dim light.
"Who does this brush belong to?" Little Ink asked softly, as if afraid to disturb some sleeping being.
No one answered him. But just then, that peculiar gemstone suddenly glowed, emitting a soft light. The light was warm yellow at first, then gradually turned blue, and finally red—the three colors cycling continuously, like a silent invitation.
Little Ink felt his heart race. He had never felt this way before—nervous yet excited, scared yet expectant. His small hand gripped the brush tightly, his fingers white from the force.
"What... what do you want me to do?" he whispered.
The gemstone on the brush glowed even brighter, as if urging him on. Little Ink hesitated, and then—
He took the brush and waved it through the air.
In an instant, the entire attic was engulfed in colorful light!
Little Ink felt as if a giant, warm hand had gently held him. The sensation was like swinging on a swing, like sliding down a slide, and also somewhat like being gently rocked in his mother's embrace. His eyes were forced shut by the brilliance, but he wasn't afraid at all, because he could feel that this light was friendly and gentle.
Then, everything went quiet.
Little Ink slowly opened his eyes.
He found himself standing in an endless world of colors.
The ground here was pal
