How Large Is the Universe?
Have you ever looked up at the night sky? When darkness falls and stars begin to twinkle, have you ever wondered: How far away are those stars? How large is the universe?
This seemingly simple question is actually profoundly deep. In this chapter, we will embark on a magnificent journey across cosmic scales, starting from our home planet Earth. We will explore step by step: from Earth to the Moon, from the Moon to the edge of our solar system, from the solar system to our Milky Way galaxy, and from the Milky Way to the entire observable universe. Along this journey, you will gradually come to understand the vastness of the cosmos, appreciate humanity's place within it, and learn the basic tools for describing cosmic distances.
Let us begin with a fact you may have never noticed: every atom in your body comes from nuclear fusion reactions inside distant stars. When those ancient stars died, they scattered these elements into space, which eventually formed our Earth and our bodies. This astonishing fact tells us that everything in the universe is interconnected. The first step to understanding this connection is understanding just how large the universe truly is.
Our Starting Point: Earth
Let us begin with the ground beneath our feet. Earth is the only place in the known universe where life is confirmed to exist, making it particularly precious and special. However, from a cosmic perspective, Earth is actually quite small.
Earth's diameter is approximately 12,742 kilometers. This number is large enough for everyday life—if you fly from Beijing to New York, it takes about 13 hours. But when we look toward space, this distance becomes insignificant. Imagine shrinking Earth to the size of a basketball; then Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, would be about the size of a beach volleyball. And the Sun? If the Sun were also proportionally reduced, it would be a sphere about 1.16 meters in diameter, large enough to occupy a corner of an entire room.
The average distance between Earth and the Sun is called an Astronomical Unit (AU). One AU equals approximately 150 million kilometers. This distance is so vast that even traveling at the speed of light—the fastest speed in the universe—it takes light about 8 minutes and 20 seconds to travel from the Sun's surface to Earth. In other words, when you look at the Sun on a clear day, the sunlight you see was actually emitted by the Sun more than 8 minutes ago.
This fact might make you feel slightly uneasy—the Sun we see is actually 8 minutes in the past. So when we look at celestial objects farther away in the universe, what point in their past are we seeing? In fact, because light takes time to travel, the distant celestial bodies we observe are always from their past. When we observe an object 1 light-year away from Earth, we see it as it was one year ago. This "time reversal" effect is one of the keys to understanding the universe.
Measuring the Cosmos: Light-Years
Speaking of the speed of light, we must introduce the most commonly used unit of distance in astronomy—the light-year. Many beginners misunderstand the term "light-year" and think it is a unit of time, but it is actually a unit of distance. As the name suggests, a light-year is the distance that light travels in one year.
The precise speed of light in a vacuum is 299,792,458 meters per second. For simplicity, we often use the approximate value of 300,000 kilometers per second (more precisely, 299,792 km/s). Let's calculate how far light travels in one year:
Where $c$ is the speed of light and $t$ is the number of seconds in one year (365.25 days). This number is approximately 9.46 trillion kilometers, or in scientific notation, $9.46 \times 10^{12}$ kilometers.
To give you a more intuitive sense of light-years, let's use some concrete examples:
- **Earth to Moon distance**: Approximately 400,000 kilometers; light takes only about 1.3 seconds to travel this distance. In other words, sunlight reflected by the Moon takes only 1.3 seconds to reach Earth.
- **Earth to Sun distance**: Approximately 150 million kilometers (1 AU); light takes 8 minutes and 20 seconds.
- **Earth to nearest star (Proxima Centauri) distance**: Approximately 4.24 light-years. This means even traveling at the speed of light, it would take over 4 years to reach there.
The light-year became the standard unit of distance in astronomy because cosmic distances are simply too vast. If we used kilometers to describe interstellar distances, the numbers would become extremely large and unwieldy. For example, the distance from Earth to the center of our galaxy is approximately 25,000 light-years. If expressed in kilometers, that would be approximately $2.4 \times 10^{17}$ kilometers—a massive number with 24 followed by 16 zeros!
In modern astronomy, besides light-years, there are several other commonly used units of distance worth understanding:
Parsec (pc): This is a distance unit based on astronomical observations. One parsec equals approximately 3.26 light-years. This unit originates from the method of stellar parallax—as Earth orbits the Sun, the position of nearby stars shifts slightly relative to more distant background stars. By measuring this angular shift, astronomers can calculate the star's distance. One parsec is the distance at which a star has a parallax of 1 arcsecond.
Megaparsec (Mpc):100
Kiloparsec (kpc): 1,000 parsecs, approximately 3,260 light-years. Often used to describe distance scales within the Milky Way galaxy.
Megaparsec (Mpc): 1 million parsecs, approximately 3.26 million light-years. Often used to describe distances between galaxies.
