A Village by the River /
A thousand years ago, long before there were tall buildings and bright lights, there was a small village by the water. This village sat on the edge of a great river, where the river met the sea. The people who lived there spent their days catching fish, watching the tides, and living simple lives connected to the water. If you could travel back in time and visit this village, you might not recognize it as Shanghai at all. There were no famous shopping streets, no giant ships in the harbor, and no famous Bund with its beautiful old buildings. But this tiny village was the very beginning of the amazing city we know today.
What Was Shanghai Like 1,000 Years Ago? /
Imagine standing on the shore of a vast river. The water is brown and muddy, carrying rich soil from far away in the mountains. As the river flows toward the sea, it slows down and spreads out, creating a triangle-shaped piece of land where freshwater meets saltwater. This special place, where the land reaches out into the ocean, is called a river delta.
The word "delta" might sound like something you learned in math class, but it actually describes a very special shape. When you look at the letter Delta (Δ), it looks like a triangle pointing downward. River deltas have this same triangular shape, spreading out like a fan where the river dumps all the soil and sand it has been carrying. In China, this delta is called the Yangtze River Delta, and Shanghai sits right at its edge, like a jewel on a crown.
If you visit a river delta today, you will notice something interesting about the soil. It is usually dark, soft, and very fertile, which means plants grow very well there. The land near river deltas is often flat and close to water, making it perfect for fishing, farming, and building settlements. That is exactly why ancient people chose to live in these places thousands of years ago.
The River That Gave Shanghai Life / 赐予上海生命的河流
The Huangpu River is Shanghai's most famous waterway today, but did you know it has been flowing for millions of years? Long before any humans walked the earth, this river was already carving its path through the land, carrying precious soil from the Yangtze River and depositing it near the coast. Over countless generations, this created the soft, fertile land that would one day become Shanghai.
For the people who first settled here, the river was everything. It provided fresh water for drinking and cooking. It offered fish and other sea creatures for food. It allowed people to travel from place to place using boats. And the rich soil near the river banks was perfect for growing vegetables and rice. Every single day of their lives was connected to the river in some way.
In those ancient times, boats were like the cars and trucks of today. Since the roads were mostly dirt paths that turned into mud when it rained, boats were actually a much better way to travel! A small wooden boat could carry goods down the river to trade with neighboring villages. Fishing boats would head out early in the morning and return by sunset, their baskets full of silvery fish that would feed whole families. Even the materials for building houses came from the river—sturdy wooden posts, reeds for weaving, and mud for making bricks.
The Ancient Song Dynasty /
Our story of Shanghai begins during the Song Dynasty, a period in Chinese history that lasted from 960 to 1279 AD. The Song Dynasty was a remarkable time in Chinese history—a period of great inventions, beautiful art, flourishing trade, and population growth. It was like a golden age for the Chinese civilization.
During the Song Dynasty, the Chinese people invented many things that we still use today. They created the first paper money, which made buying and selling much easier than carrying heavy coins. They developed moveable type for printing books, which meant more people could learn to read and write. They built sophisticated water clocks and star maps. They invented the magnetic compass that helped sailors find their way on the ocean. Without these inventions, our modern world would look very different!
The Song Dynasty is also famous for its beautiful art. Song Dynasty painters created stunning landscapes showing mountains, rivers, and mistshrouded forests. Pottery from this period is considered some of the finest in the world, with elegant shapes and delicate colors. Poets wrote touching verses about nature, friendship, and the passage of time. The Song Dynasty people valued education, beauty, and harmony with nature.

The Salt Trade /
During the Song Dynasty, the area near Shanghai played an important role in the salt trade. Salt might seem like a simple ingredient today—we just go to the store and buy a box of it—but in ancient times, salt was incredibly valuable. In fact, salt was once called "white gold" because it was as precious as gold itself!
Why was salt so valuable? There are several reasons. First, salt is essential for human health. Our bodies need salt to work properly, and without it, we would become very sick. Second, salt was used to preserve food before refrigerators existed. Before people could put food in cold boxes to keep it fresh, they would cover it with salt. Salt drew out the water from food and killed bacteria, allowing fish, meat, and vegetables to last
