Chapter 1: Chill First! Let’s Talk About Your Prejudices Toward Divination
Last week, my friend Xiao A sent me a 59-second voice message at 2 a.m. on the third day after her breakup, starting with a sobbing “Divination is such a scam, I told you so!” The background was the noisy chatter of a bar. The day before, she had stumbled upon a tarot reading livestream on a short video app, and the host, after staring at her birth date for three seconds, declared firmly, “You will definitely meet your soulmate next week – a guy in a black top and black-framed glasses.” For the whole following week, she deliberately wore a black coat, swapped her clear-framed glasses for black ones, and took a detour after work to walk through the busiest exit of the subway station. The only person who matched the description was a salesperson pitching gym annual memberships, who turned out to be married with a kid old enough to start elementary school. She was so angry that she deleted all divination-related apps on the spot and swore she would never touch anything like that again.
Xiao A’s anger is totally understandable. After all, almost all the information we’ve received about divination since childhood has been negative: parents warn us “don’t mess with those weird, superstitious things, they’ll ruin your luck”; news reports keep exposing cases of “fortune-telling masters” scamming people out of millions of yuan; even science teachers in school emphasize “believe in science, oppose feudal superstition”. Over time, divination has almost been equated with “superstition”, “scamming”, and “unreliable”. Many people roll their eyes at the mere mention of divination, thinking “what era is this now, who still believes in that stuff?”
But hold on, don’t scroll away, and don’t start arguing with me just yet. We’re not talking about these prejudices to “whitewash” divination, nor are we trying to convince you to believe how magical it is right now. On the contrary, we’re talking about these biases to pull “divination” down from the pedestal, and pull it out of the trash heap too
1.1 Why Do We Instinctively React Negatively to the Mere Mention of Divination?
Over time, divination has almost been equated with “superstition”, “scamming”, and “unreliable”. Many people roll their eyes at the mere mention of divination, thinking “what era is this now, who still believes in that stuff?” This instinctive aversion is almost a “default setting” from our upbringing: parents warn us “don’t mess with those weird, superstitious things, they’ll ruin your luck”; science teachers emphasize “believe in science, oppose feudal superstition”; news reports keep exposing cases of “fortune-telling masters” scamming people out of millions of yuan; and in TV shows and movies, diviners are either con artists pretending to have supernatural powers, or all-knowing mystics – there are barely any normal characters who use divination to help people sort out their problems. This all-around information input has locked in our first impression of divination: it’s unreliable, don’t even touch it.
这种偏见的形成其实是有迹可循的,我们可以用一张简单的流程图理清楚它的生成逻辑: ```mermaid graph LR A[成长环境灌输:家长/老师/媒体将占卜与“封建迷信”绑定] --> B[刻板印象形成:占卜=不科学=骗人] C[影视剧渲染:占卜师=神棍/骗子] --> B D[真实诈骗案例曝光:不良从业者用占卜行骗] --> B B --> E[偏见固化:一提到占卜就反感,拒绝了解] E --> F[错过占卜的实用价值,甚至因偏见踩坑] ``` This bias actually has a clear path of formation. We can map out its generation logic with a simple flowchart:
This aversion itself is not your fault – it’s the result of a combination of social environment, media messaging, and real scam cases. But the problem is, this “lump them all together” bias not only makes us miss out on the potential value of divination, but can even make us fall into pitfalls ourselves. For example, one of my readers was struggling at work and originally wanted to find a reliable diviner to help her sort out her career confusion. But because she kept thinking “divination is all a scam”, she tough it out for half a year, working overtime until midnight every day, until she was diagnosed with moderate depression and had to quit to rest. She lost half a year’s bonus and set back her career development. If she had let go of her bias and used divination as a tool to sort out her confusion, she might have identified the problem earlier and made a more suitable choice.
1.1 Why Do We Instinctively React Negatively to the Mere Mention of Divination?
To unravel this aversion, we first need to break down its core sources, each of which corresponds to a common prejudice we hold about divination. Let’s talk through them one by one.
---
##### 1.1.1 First Source: We’ve Been Ingrained with the Equation “Divination = Feudal Superstition”
From childhood on, parents, teachers, and mainstream media have all repeatedly told us one thing: divination is feudal superstition, a leftover from the old society, something only uneducated people believe in. For example, in elementary school science class, teachers would dedicate a whole lesson to “opposing feudal superstition”, which always included fortune-telling, face reading, and tarot divination, telling us these are all scams and we should believe in science. Parents would also tell us “don’t play with those things, playing with them too much will ruin your luck” when we played fortune-telling games.
But there is actually a huge misunderstanding here: the “feudal superstition” we are taught to oppose actually refers to “criminal activities that use supernatural forces to scam and harm people”, not the tool of divination itself. For example, the 2021 *Anti-Organized Crime Law of the People’s Republic of China* explicitly mentions cracking down on “criminal activities that use superstitious activities to commit crimes”, targeting the “use”, not the superstitious activities themselves. Just like we don’t say “kitchen knives are murder weapons”, we only say “the person who uses a kitchen knife to kill is the murderer”. The tool itself has no inherent right or wrong; it depends on the purpose of the person using it.
