We Are All Networked
Have you ever wondered that when you post a photo on social media, a few minutes later you receive likes and comments from friends in different places? Or when you follow an influencer and share their video to your account, your friend shares it with their friends? These seemingly simple daily actions are actually weaving an invisible, vast web.
In this web, you are not an isolated individual. You are a point, connected to other points through various means. And every interaction you make—likes, comments, shares—adds new connections to this web. This is a social network, an ancient yet modern concept that shapes our way of life, thinking, and even our future.
What is a Social Network
A social network refers to a relatively stable relationship system formed by interactions among individual members of society. In other words, it is the study of how people connect with and interact with each other. This concept may sound academic, but in reality, it surrounds us—from the moment we open our eyes in the morning and check our phones.
Imagine drawing every person in the world as a small dot. Whenever we have contact with someone—whether sending a message, making a phone call, or having a face-to-face conversation—we draw a line between these two dots. These dots are called nodes, and the lines are called edges. Together, nodes and edges form what we call a network.

The diagram above shows a simple social network. Each node represents a person, and each edge represents some kind of connection. Notice that some connections are bidirectional (you and your best friend are each other's friends), while others are unidirectional (for example, you follow an influencer, but the influencer doesn't necessarily follow you back).
The Meaning of Nodes
In a social network, a node is the basic unit of the network. It can represent a person, an organization, a city, or even a country. Nodes have the following characteristics:
Diversity: Nodes can be different types of entities. In social media networks, a user account is a node; in transportation networks, a subway station is a node; in biology, a neuron is a node.
Attributes: Each node has its unique attributes. For example, in a WeChat network, a node's attributes might include username, gender, age, geographic location, registration time, etc.
Position: A node's position in the network is also important. A node in the center of a network often has greater influence.
The Meaning of Edges
Directionality: Some edges are bidirectional, like friendship—you are my friend, and I am yours. Some edges are unidirectional, like following on Weibo—I can follow you, but you don't necessarily have to follow me back.
Strength: Edges can vary in strength. The friend you chat with every day has a stronger connection to you than the relative you only greet during holidays.
Type: Edges can represent different types of relationships, such as kinship, classmate relationships, colleague relationships, fan relationships, etc.
Starting from "Six Degrees of Separation"
When it comes to social networks, there is a famous theory you must have heard of—Six Degrees of Separation. This theory was first proposed by Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy in 1929 and later verified through Stanley Milgram's "Small World Experiment" in 1967.
The core idea of Six Degrees of Separation is: any two people in the world can be connected through at most six layers of relationships. In other words, you only need to go through five intermediaries to reach any person on Earth, whether it's a Hollywood star, a government official, or a resident of an African tribe.
Imagine this scenario: you want to contact a scientist you admire, say a Nobel Prize winner. You don't know him, but here's what you can do—first contact your teacher, your teacher contacts his colleague, his colleague contacts this scientist's student, and this student contacts the scientist himself. Counting it up, it only takes four to five steps to establish a connection with this scientist.

Small World Networks
The Six Degrees of Separation theory reveals an important characteristic of social networks—the Small World Effect. Mathematically, we can quantify this characteristic using the average path length, which is the average distance of the shortest paths between any two nodes in the network.
$$L = \frac{1}{n(n-1)} \sum_{i \neq j} d(i,j)$$
Where $L$ is the average path length, $n$ is the total number of nodes, and $d(i,j)$ is the shortest path length between node $i$ and node $j$.
In a small world network, although there are many nodes, the average distance between any two nodes is short. This is why rumors can spread throughout the entire internet in just a few hours, because information only needs to go through a few "hops" to reach a large number of people.
Network Forms: Random Networks and Scale-Free Networks
