The night of November 7, 1917 (October 25 in the Julian calendar), the cannon fire from the cruiser Aurora pierced the silent sky of Petrograd. This single shot not only destroyed the two-hundred-year rule of the Romanov dynasty but also cast a stone into the river of human history that would reshape the world's destiny. As Bolshevik Red Guards stormed the Winter Palace and ministers of the Provisional Government were arrested, the fate of the world quietly turned toward a new direction—one in which two vastly different ideologies would wage the longest and most profound struggle in human history for the century to come.
What happened that winter night was far more than a change of regime. When Lenin stood amid the abandoned documents of the Provisional Government and declared the establishment of Soviet power, he represented not merely the victory of a new party but a declaration of war by an entirely new worldview. This worldview was convinced that the internal contradictions of capitalism would inevitably lead to its own demise, and that the working class and oppressed nations would establish a communist society without exploitation and oppression under the leadership of the Communist Party. This conviction would become the central tension in international relations for the next seventy years.
The Birth of a Revolutionary Doctrine
To understand why the Cold War was inevitable, one must first comprehend Lenin's revolutionary transformation of Marxist theory. The classical theory of Marx and Engels held that socialist revolution would first occur in the most developed capitalist countries, because there the proletariat was most numerous, most organized, and possessed the strongest class consciousness. However, Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century was a relatively economically backward country where peasants constituted the majority of the population. The theoretical challenge Lenin faced was: how could socialist revolution be achieved in such an "unqualified" capitalist country?
Lenin's answer was revolutionary: the era of imperialism had granted relatively backward countries a special historical opportunity. In his work "Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism," Lenin systematically expounded how monopolistic capitalism led to fundamental contradictions within the capitalist system. Within this analytical framework, the world was divided into two major parts: oppressing nations and oppressed nations. The working class in advanced capitalist countries had temporarily lost its revolutionary momentum because they received a portion of the "surplus profits" from colonial plunder, while the proletariat and peasants in backward countries, bearing double oppression, became the main force of revolution.
The key extension of this theory was the logic of "exporting revolution." Since the world capitalist system was an inseparable whole, since the contradiction between oppressing and oppressed nations was the fundamental contradiction of this system, revolution erupting in one or several countries would inevitably have international significance. The Bolshevik regime not only had to build socialism in Russia but also bore the responsibility to support and aid revolutionary movements in countries worldwide. In March 1919, the founding of the Third International (Comintern) put this theory into practice. Revolutionaries from around the world gathered in Moscow, planning the blueprint for world revolution under the banner of the Comintern.
Trotsky's Permanent Revolution
Among Bolshevik theorists, Trotsky's theory of "permanent revolution" had an especially profound impact on the origins of the Cold War. The core viewpoint of this theory was that the bourgeois democratic revolution and the proletarian socialist revolution were not two independent stages but a continuous process. In backward countries, the bourgeoisie, due to its weakness and capitulation to feudal forces, could not accomplish the democratic revolutionary task of anti-feudalism; this task had to be undertaken by the proletariat through establishing a worker-peasant alliance, continuously transcending the limits of democratic revolution toward socialist revolution.
Trotsky further argued that a victorious proletarian regime could not be confined within one country. To survive and develop, a socialist regime would inevitably seek international support, and the most reliable form of such support was to spark revolutions in other countries. In other words, socialist revolution was international from the outset; domestic revolution and world revolution were an inseparable whole. This theory provided the ideological basis for the Bolshevik regime's later support for communist movements globally, and it also became the psychological root of Western nations' fear of Soviet expansion.
From a historical perspective, Trotsky's theory was not mere fantasy. The Bolshevik regime indeed attempted to spread revolution to Europe between 1917 and 1920. Communist movement upswings appeared in Germany, Hungary, Finland, and the Baltic states. Although these attempts ultimately failed—the Spartacist uprising in Germany was suppressed, the Bavarian Soviet Republic lasted only two months, and the Hungarian Soviet Republic collapsed under Allied armed intervention—this series of actions deepened Western fears of Soviet "export of revolution." When the Bolshevik regime attacked Poland in 1920 in an attempt to advance revolution toward Europe, this fear reached its zenith. Although the failure of the Battle of Warsaw temporarily ended Bolshevik hopes of advancing westward, the logic of exporting revolution was already deeply embedded in the genetic code of Soviet diplomacy.
Wilson and the Self-Determination of Nations
While the Bolsheviks were seizing power in Russia, across the ocean the United States was gestating another set of ideas that would profoundly influence twentieth-century international relations. On January 8, 1918, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson delivered his famous "Fourteen Points" address to both houses of Congress, systematically articulating America's vision for the post-war world order for the first time. This speech was not only
