Xiao Ming lay in bed, the morning sunbeams filtering through the curtains, painting golden ribbons across his desk. It was an ordinary Saturday morning in early autumn, the air filled with a gentle coolness, and distant bird songs filled the silence with life.
Xiao Ming rubbed his eyes and glanced at the digital clock on his nightstand—8:15 AM. For a thirteen-year-old middle schooler, this definitely qualified as "waking up early." He stretched luxuriously, thinking to himself: What a perfect Saturday morning for some well-deserved relaxation.
However, fate seemed to have plans of its own.
"Knock knock knock—"
A knock on the door interrupted Xiao Ming's pleasant dreams.
"Xiao Ming, are you up? Mom has something to ask of you." His mother's gentle yet anticipatory voice came from outside the door.
Xiao Ming felt a flutter of unease in his chest. Every time Mom used that "asking a favor" tone, things rarely turned out to be simple. He quickly got dressed, opened the door, and saw his mother holding a USB drive, wearing that expression that said "I know this is a bit troublesome but I need your help."
"What's up, Mom?" Xiao Ming asked cautiously.
" Sweetie, you know外婆's 70th birthday is coming up next month." Mom's eyes lit up. "Your dad organized a whole year of photos and stored them all on this USB drive. But these photos are a complete mess—sometimes saved by date, sometimes by event, making them impossible to use. I was hoping you could help me sort these photos by date and categorize them into different folders. What do you think?"
Xiao Ming took the USB drive, feeling its weight in his hand, as if it contained not just data but also his mother's earnest expectations. He plugged the USB into his computer and opened the folder—
"Oh my goodness!" Xiao Ming gasped.
有的文件名是"IMG_001.jpg",有的是"DSC_1234.png",有的干脆就是"未命名-1"。
On the screen, thousands of photos were packed together in a jumbled mess, completely disorganized. Some files were named "IMG_001.jpg," others "DSC_1234.png," and some were干脆 just "Untitled-1." Dates? Sorry, no way to tell. Locations? Impossible to determine.
Xiao Ming felt his head spinning. These were photos from an entire year! At the most conservative estimate, there were at least three thousand of them. If he opened each one, checked the date, and dragged it to the appropriate folder—even if each photo took just thirty seconds, that would mean...
Twenty-five hours. That's basically three whole days of work, just for photo organization!
"Mom," Xiao Ming said pitifully, looking up at his mother, "This... this might take a very, very long time..."
His mother smiled and patted Xiao Ming's shoulder: "It's okay, take your time. If you can't finish it all, that's fine too. I'll think of another way."
Watching his mother's retreating figure, Xiao Ming slumped back in his chair. He stared at the mountain of photos on his screen and let out a deep, weary sigh.
Just then, his phone suddenly buzzed.
It was a WeChat message from his good friend, Xiao Hua.
Xiao Hua had been Xiao Ming's best friend since elementary school. They often played basketball and video games together, and Xiao Hua was known throughout class as the "Computer Whiz Kid." At this moment, the message he sent was brief yet mysterious:
"Xiao Ming, heard your mom assigned you to organize photos? Haha, looks like fate! I just learned an incredible skill that can automatically sort your photos for you! Want me to teach you?"
Xiao Ming replied almost instantly: "What skill? That amazing?"
“Python!
"Python! Have you heard of it? They say it's like magic—it can make your computer obey your commands and automatically complete all kinds of tasks! Including organizing photos! I tried it last night, and it's truly powerful! I'll come over this afternoon and teach you how to install it. We'll have fun together!"
Python?
Python? Magic? A spark of hope ignited in Xiao Ming's heart. He put down his phone and looked at the blue sky outside the window, feeling for the first time that maybe the USB drive wasn't so terrifying after all.

The Waiting Hours: What is Programming?
The entire morning, Xiao Ming couldn't sit still. He'd open the folder to look at the photos, then close it again, his heart filled with both anticipation and nervousness. Was this Python Xia Hua mentioned really that magical? What exactly was it?
To pass the time, Xiao Ming opened his computer and started searching.
"What is Python programming"
Search results flooded in like a tide. Xiao Ming clicked on several web pages and began reading them seriously.
Slowly but surely, an entirely new world began to unfold before his eyes.
Xiao Ming learned that programming is essentially using a special language to "talk" to computers, telling them what to do. Just as humans use Chinese, English, and other languages to communicate ideas, people and computers also need a shared "language"—that is what we call programming languages.
> > Think of a computer program like a detailed recipe. A recipe tells a chef what ingredients are needed, in what order to combine them, and what temperature to set the oven. Similarly, a program tells a computer what data is needed, what steps to execute, and what results to output.
There are many programming languages in the world, each with its own characteristics and areas of expertise. For example:
- **C language** is like a car engine—highly efficient but complex to control
- **Java** is like standardized furniture—stable and reliable, suitable for large enterprise projects
- **Python** is like a master key—simple and easy to use, capable of handling almost any task
The more Xiao Ming read, the more excited he became. So programming wasn't some mysterious, incomprehensible thing after all—it was simply a tool, a means for humans to direct computers. And Python was one of the easiest to learn yet most powerful tools available.
Just as Xiao Ming was immersed in his sea of knowledge, the doorbell rang.
It was Xia Hua!
