Introduction: Understanding the World from the Depths of Matter
Human civilization, in a sense, is a history of material discovery and utilization. When our ancestors first fashioned flint into tools, when bronze flowed into molds, when steel was tempered in flames—each material breakthrough was accompanied by profound transformations in human society. Materials are not merely tools for transforming nature; they are markers of civilizational progress. From the "Stone Age" to the "Bronze Age," from the "Iron Age" to the "Silicon Age," these designations themselves reveal the inseparable connection between materials and the development of human society.
However, materials science as an independent discipline underwent a long formation process. In antiquity, material discoveries relied mainly on chance and experience; in modern times, people began systematically studying material properties; and in the contemporary era, with the emergence of quantum mechanics, advanced microscopy, and computational simulation methods, materials science has finally entered its golden age—an era capable of designing and controlling materials at the atomic and molecular levels.
This chapter will guide readers through the developmental history of materials science, elaborate on the intrinsic connection between material revolutions and human civilizational progress, introduce the fundamental research framework of materials science, and focus on analyzing why the 21st century is called "the golden age of materials science." Through this macro-perspective overview, we hope to establish a systematic cognitive framework for readers to better understand the in-depth discussions on nanomaterials, superconducting materials, and metamaterials in subsequent chapters.

Section 1: Echoes of History — Four Material Revolutions and Human Civilization
1.1 The Bronze Age: Dawn of Civilization
Approximately between 3300 BCE and 1200 BCE, humanity entered the Bronze Age. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin (sometimes arsenic), with a lower melting point (approximately 950°C) than pure copper (approximately 1085°C), yet significantly greater hardness, making it easier to cast into complex shapes for tools and weapons. Archaeological evidence indicates that the earliest bronze artifacts were found at the site of Çatal Höyük in modern-day Turkey, and this technology subsequently spread to Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, and China.
The significance of the Bronze Age lies not only in the superior properties of the material itself but also in how it gave birth to new forms of social organization. The production of bronze weapons and tools required specialized craftsmen and workshops, promoting social division of labor; the exchange and trade of bronze artifacts drove the formation of long-distance trade networks; and the elite classes controlling bronze production and distribution established more complex social hierarchies. The famous "Bronze Age Collapse" (circa 1200 BCE) more profoundly illustrates a fundamental truth: when material technology undergoes fundamental transformation, entire social structures may become destabilized.
From a scientific perspective, bronze smelting marked humanity's beginning to consciously control material composition to achieve desired properties. Although ancients lacked the concept of "alloy phase diagrams," through long-term practical experimentation, they gradually mastered the relationship between copper-tin ratios and material properties. For instance, bronze with a tin content of approximately 10%-12% exhibits optimal mechanical properties—neither too brittle nor too soft—which represents the typical composition of ancient Bronze Age weapons and tools.
1.2 The Iron Age: Rise of Agriculture and Empire
The arrival of the Iron Age was another major leap in material history. Although iron artifacts appeared in the late Bronze Age, smelting technology only became widely disseminated in the eastern Mediterranean region after approximately 1200 BCE. Iron's abundance far exceeds copper and tin (the crustal abundance of iron is approximately 5.6%, while copper is only 0.006%), a fact that determined the Iron Age would have social impacts completely different from the Bronze Age.
Iron's high melting point (approximately 1538°C) presented enormous technical challenges to ancient craftsmen. Early iron smelting primarily used the "bloomery process"—heating iron ore with charcoal to obtain a spongy iron mass requiring repeated forging to remove impurities. This method was energy-intensive and inefficient, but the resulting wrought iron had good toughness and could be shaped through forging. Approximately in the 8th century BCE, the "cast iron production method" was invented, using higher temperatures to fully melt iron for direct casting, marking an important breakthrough in smelting technology.
The social impact of the Iron Age was profound. First, iron farm tools (such as iron plows and hoes) greatly improved agricultural production efficiency, laying the material foundation for population growth and urban development. Second, iron weapons (such as iron swords and arrowheads) shifted the balance of military power—since iron implements were more accessible, the power balance between tribes and nations changed, which is considered one important reason for the rise and fall of many ancient empires. Furthermore, the proliferation of iron tools broke the aristocratic class's monopoly on rare metals, enabling more people to obtain relatively inexpensive tools and weapons, thus promoting social democratization.
Notably, during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods (approximately 770 BCE–221 BCE), China developed unique high-quality steel production technologies. The invention of "pig iron decarburization" and "crucible steel" methods enabled China to produce high-carbon steel and "refined steel" with excellent performance. These materials were used to manufacture the famous "Sword of King Goujian" and weapons of the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, whose quality still amazes modern materials scientists today.
