When Sound Becomes Story: Entering the World of Podcast Sound Design
The subway car rumbled through the tunnel, the automated announcement fading into the mechanical roar of the train. Outside the windows, darkness rushed past, punctuated only by occasional dim lights flickering by like fragments of half-remembered dreams. The other passengers were lost in their own worlds—some staring at phone screens, others dozing with eyes closed, still more scrolling through social media in mechanical fashion. The air carried that particular exhaustion unique to early mornings.
But in one person's ears, something different was happening.
It was the opening sound sequence of a podcast: a low ambient bed铺垫ing in, an almost imperceptible hum gradually emerging, as if from somewhere far away. Then, soft piano notes descended, each one carrying precisely the right amount of resonance, dissolving slowly into the silence. Following this, a steady and warm voice began to speak, telling a story about a distant place.
This person—let's call her Lin Yu—had only meant to fill the boredom of her commute. But in that moment, she was completely captivated. Without thinking, she turned up the volume, sinking deeper into the world this sound had created. The surrounding noise still existed; the subway's rumble was still harsh. Yet in her perception, those sounds receded into distant background noise. Right now, only that voice, that narration, that story, existed with any real presence.
This wasn't an ordinary morning. Thirty minutes later, when the subway reached her stop, Lin Yu didn't immediately get off. She sat in her seat, waiting for the episode to reach a natural pause before reluctantly removing her earbuds. That day, at the company cafeteria, she recommended the podcast to a colleague for the first time, with a simple explanation: "You have to hear their sound, that feeling."
Years later, when Lin Yu herself became a podcast creator, she finally understood what had happened that morning. It wasn't simply that a recording had been played; it was that a carefully designed sonic experience had been created. The immersion she felt, the state of being deeply drawn in—none of this had happened by accident. It was the magic of sound design, the accumulation of countless decisions and choices.

This is the power of sound design. And it's exactly what this book wants to share with you.

What Is Sound Design?
Let's begin with a seemingly simple question: What is sound design?
Wikipedia defines sound design as "the art and skill of creating and selecting sound effects for films, television, theater, podcasts, games, or other media." This definition covers the broad meaning of sound design, but it may not be specific enough to help you truly understand what podcast creators mean when they talk about "sound design."
Before we go deeper, let's do a thought experiment. Imagine you're producing a podcast episode with the theme "The Global Journey of a Cup of Coffee"—from coffee plantations in Ethiopia, to processing plants in Brazil, to a cozy café in the city. Your task is to tell this story in a way that makes listeners feel the aroma of coffee, the sunlight on plantations, the labor of workers, and finally the warmth of that cup in your hands.
How would you approach this?
If your first instinct is "grab a microphone and start recording," that's completely fine—you do need to record sound. But that's only the starting point of sound design, not the end. True sound design thinks about more questions: What should the ambient sounds of the recorded environment be like? What style should the background music be? What timbre and tone should the voice use? How should the sound fade in at the opening and fade out at the ending? Between different segments, how should the sounds transition?
Sound design isn't just about what you *record*; it's about how you *construct* and *orchestrate* these sound elements so they together create a complete auditory experience. Just as a film director doesn't merely film actors' performances but also carefully designs the visual language, color palette, and background music, a podcast sound designer doesn't just record conversations and narration but carefully constructs the entire sonic world of the episode.
(Recording Technology)
(Sound Editing)
(Sound Mixing)
(Sound Storytelling)
Four Layers of Sound Design
To better understand sound design, we can break it down into four fundamental layers:
Layer One: Recording Technology
This is the most basic layer of sound design, dealing with how to capture sound using equipment. It includes microphone selection (dynamic, condenser, lavalier, etc.), selection and treatment of recording environments, setting recording levels, choosing audio formats, and more. The technical quality of this layer directly affects the professionalism of the final product. A conversation recorded on a phone in a noisy coffee shop versus the same conversation recorded with high-quality equipment in a professional studio—listeners would experience these two recordings as worlds apart.
Layer Two: Sound Editing
After recording is complete, sound editing involves processing and assembling the original audio material. This includes noise reduction, equalization (EQ), compression, adding reverb, and more. The task of the editing layer is to polish recorded material into usable assets while preparing them for the subsequent mixing and mastering stages.
Layer Three: Sound Mixing
Mixing is the process of integrating multiple audio tracks together. At this layer, podcast creators must decide the relative volume and balance between different elements: voice, background music, ambient sound, sound effects, and more. A good mix allows these elements to coexist harmoniously, enhancing rather than interfering with each other. For instance, when a narrator describes a tense scene, how should the background music cooperate? When introducing an interview clip, how much should the ambient sound be reduced? These questions are resol
