When we look back at the long river of world history, we find countless empires shining and falling like stars. Some empires had vast territories but were short-lived, while others had brilliant civilizations but remained isolated. However, one empire stands out with its unique resilience and magnificent grandeur, writing an extraordinarily important chapter in human history—the Ottoman Empire. From 1299 to 1922, this empire traversed 623 years of ups and downs, spanning three continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa, ruling hundreds of millions of people, nurturing a unique civilization, and profoundly influencing the course of human history.
Understanding the Ottoman Empire is not only about understanding the rise and fall of a historical entity, but also about understanding an important window into the exchanges and mutual learning among world civilizations. Located at the crossroads where East meets West, this empire served as the frontier between Islamic civilization and the Christian world, and as an important hub in the Silk Road trade system. Its existence gave medieval and modern world history a more complex and multidimensional appearance.
This chapter serves as the opening of this book, establishing an overall cognitive framework for readers about the Ottoman Empire. We will start from the basic positioning in time and space, clarifying the empire's starting dates and geographical boundaries; through horizontal comparisons with other famous empires, we will help readers find the Ottoman Empire's precise location in their known historical coordinate system; we will trace the empire's name changes in different periods and explore the origins of the name "Ottoman"; finally, we will preview the overall structure of this book, giving readers a clear overall grasp of the knowledge territory they are about to explore.
The Starting Year: The Historical Significance of 1299
The history of the Ottoman Empire is generally counted from 1299, the year when Osman I (c. 1258-1326) formally declared independence and established the Ottoman Beylik (meaning "the leader's domain" or "principality") named after himself. However, understanding this date requires us to place it within a grander historical context.
1299 was a time of profound transformation in both East and West. In Anatolia (present-day Turkey), the once-powerful Seljuk Turkish Empire had fragmented into pieces, entering what historians call the "Post-Seljuk Period." The Mongol Empire's westward expansion in the mid-13th century brought tremendous upheaval to this land, and the Seljuk Sultanate became nominal in name only under Mongol attacks. Various local forces declared independence and established their own domains. It was in this chaotic situation of competing powers that the Ottoman family, through exceptional military talent and political wisdom, gradually rose above the many small states.
The rise of Osman I was quite legendary. According to tradition, he came from a Turkish nomadic family of the Kayı tribe, which had been subordinate to the Seljuk Turks. Osman's father was named Ertuğrul, who reportedly led his people to settle in the Sakarya River basin in northwestern Anatolia after a defeat. It was on this land that Osman I gradually accumulated strength and ultimately established his own regime in 1299.
It should be noted that 1299, as the starting year of the empire, is not a precise chronological point but a symbolic date determined by later historians based on the Ottoman Empire's own developmental logic. In fact, there is still considerable scholarly debate about the specific details of Osman I's life, but 1299, as the concept of the beginning of the Ottoman era, has become deeply ingrained and serves as a common starting point for both academic research and popular narratives.
The Ending Year: The Empire's Demise in 1922
If 1299 represented the萌芽 of a great empire, then 1922 marked the final end of this empire in history. On November 1, 1922, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey formally abolished the Sultanate, and the last Sultan Mehmed VI had fled Istanbul in haste the day before. The Sultanate that had lasted for over six hundred years thus came to an end, while the Republic of Turkey, declared on October 29, 1923, marked the beginning of a completely new era.
1922 was not a sudden historical event but the result of the Ottoman Empire's long decline. From the end of the 17th century, the empire had already shown signs of decline: militarily, it suffered defeats in multiple wars against European powers; economically, the traditional tax-farming system and isolationist policies led to stagnant productivity; politically, nationalist ideologies constantly eroded the empire's multi-ethnic and multi-religious structure. Neither the 19th-century "Tanzimat Period" (1839-1876) nor the early 20th-century "Young Turk Revolution" (1908) could save the empire from decline. The participation in World War I (1914-1918) became the final straw that broke the empire's back.
Understanding the significance of 1922 also requires us to make an important distinction: the abolition of the Sultanate did not mean the complete legal end of the Ottoman Empire. In fact, before 1922, the Sultanate had been abolished once in 1920 by the Grand National Assembly, but this abolition had no practical effect due to foreign occupation and the existence of the Sultan's government. The 1922 deposition was completed when the Sultan himself had fled and there were no heirs, thus having decisive legal effect. From this day forward, the Ottoman Empire that once spanned three continents no longer existed in the political sense.
Periodization of the Empire's History
To better understand the Ottoman Empire's historical evolution over more than six hundred years, historians generally divide it into several main periods. This division considers both the i
