When we walk into a museum and stroll through its galleries, the meticulously arranged artifacts, hung artworks, and interactive installations that create an immersive environment seem to silently tell specific stories. We may not have noticed what forces guide our gaze, determine our walking rhythm, and influence our emotional connection with the exhibits. All of this stems from the exhibition space itself—a carefully designed narrative container, a medium connecting objects and people, time and space, the past and the future. Understanding exhibition space is an essential lesson for every exhibition designer, and also the starting point for entering the world of spatial narrative.
Exhibition design, as an independent discipline, integrates knowledge and skills from multiple fields including architecture, interior design, visual communication, museology, psychology, and communication studies. It is both an art, requiring designers to possess keen aesthetic perception and creative expression abilities, and a technology, demanding mastery of spatial planning, ergonomics, lighting technology, multimedia interaction, and other professional skills. However, whether art or technology, its core objective remains constant: creating meaningful spatial experiences that allow audiences to walk, observe, think, and feel within the space, ultimately gaining knowledge, emotional resonance, or aesthetic appreciation.
In this chapter, we will establish the basic conceptual framework for understanding exhibition space. We will first explore what exhibition space is, what its essential characteristics are, and what functions it can fulfill. Then we will analyze the characteristics and design requirements of different types of exhibition spaces. Next, we will review the development of exhibition design from traditional to contemporary periods, revealing the key transformations the field is undergoing. Finally, we will compare traditional museums with contemporary experiential exhibitions, helping readers establish a design thinking starting point adapted to contemporary development.

What is exhibition space? This question seems simple but contains rich connotations. In its most literal sense, exhibition space is a physical place used for displaying objects and presenting information. However, understanding it merely as a "container with four walls and a roof" vastly underestimates the complexity and importance of exhibition space.
Contemporary exhibition design theory tends to view exhibition space as a narrative medium. Unlike traditional narrative media such as books or films, exhibition space is a three-dimensional, embodied, and immersive narrative medium. Audiences are not "reading" or "watching" an exhibition; they are "walking through" it, "breathing within" it, using all their bodily senses to experience the information conveyed by the space. This particularity of physical presence determines that exhibition space has narrative potential that other media cannot easily replace.
Eilean Hooper-Greenhill, a renowned museum scholar, once pointed out: "Museum space is not a neutral container, but an active site of meaning construction." This statement incisively reveals the essential characteristic of exhibition space: space itself participates in the generation of meaning, rather than passively carrying exhibits. The scale of space affects our perception of exhibit scale; the color of space affects our emotional state; the layout of space guides our viewing sequence; the materials of space evoke our associations with touch and era. Through careful spatial design, designers are actually weaving a network of meaning, inviting audiences to explore, discover, and construct their own understanding within it.
To more precisely grasp the essence of exhibition space, we can understand its basic attributes from three dimensions: physical attributes, narrative attributes, and social attributes.
Physical attributes are the most intuitive level of exhibition space. They include the form of space (planar shape, height, volume), materials (materials and textures of floors, walls, and ceilings), light environment (configuration of natural and artificial light), and climate conditions (temperature, humidity, air quality). These physical elements not only determine the visual appearance and physical experience of space but also directly affect the preservation and display effects of exhibits. Taking materials as an example, an industrial-style exhibition hall dominated by fair-faced concrete gives people a completely different feeling from a traditional tearoom-style exhibition hall with wooden materials. The former often conveys a modern, cool, and rational atmosphere, while the latter creates a warm, humanistic, and poetic ambiance. Designers need to select appropriate combinations of physical attributes based on the theme, content, and target audience of the exhibition.
Narrative attributes involve how exhibition space conveys information and tells stories. Essentially, any exhibition is engaged in narrative, just with different methods and depths of storytelling. Some exhibitions use time as the main thread, presenting the development of history, such as the basic galleries of national museums. Some use themes as a framework to explore specific issues, such as special exhibitions on climate change. Others use emotions as a thread to create specific experiential atmospheres, such as commemorative exhibitions or art installations. The core question of narrative attributes is: How can the organization of space, the arrangement of sequences, and the hierarchy of information help audiences understand what the exhibition aims to convey? This requires designers to possess narrative planning abilities, transforming content into spatial language.
Social attributes focus on exhibition space as a place for interpersonal interaction. Exhibitions are never purely private experiences but have a strong social dimension as public activities. People visit exhibitions with family, fr
