Chapter 1: Welcome to Starry Sky School
---
Imagine, just for a moment, that you lived long, long ago, in a time before electricity, before smartphones, when the only light you could see at night came from the stars above. People back then could look up every evening and see thousands upon thousands of twinkling lights scattered across a vast dark sky—like diamonds scattered on a giant piece of black velvet.
What would you do?
You'd stare at those stars, wouldn't you? You'd wonder what they looked like. Maybe you'd think they looked like little animals playing games together, or like a string of candied hawthorns, or like your favorite pattern or picture.
🌟 The Birth of Little Star Milo
Long, long ago—so long ago that even Time itself had almost forgotten that era—there lived a little star in the sky. His name was Milo.
Milo was a very, very small star—so small that if you tried to look at him from Earth with just your eyes, you could hardly see him at all, like a single grain of sand on a beach. But Milo had a special gift: he loved to watch the children on Earth.
Every night, when the Sun公公 (Grandpa Sun) yawned and hid behind the mountains, and the Moon姐姐 (Sister Moon) quietly climbed up the sky wearing her silver cloak, Milo would open his big eyes wide and carefully watch the children on the ground who were looking up at the stars. He would see them point at the sky and say, "Look! That's the Big Bear constellation!" or "Quick, look at those three stars lined up in a row—they look like they're dancing!"
What Milo loved most was watching children give names to the stars. Some kids said those seven stars connected together looked like a ladle, so they called it "the Big Dipper." Some said there was a big scorpion in the sky, with a red curved tail—that was "Scorpius." And others thought there were two little babies hugging each other up there, looking so warm and sweet, so they called it "Gemini."
Every time he heard a new name, Milo would quietly memorize it in his heart. He thought humans who could name the stars were truly wonderful.
✨ What Is the Language of Stars?
One night, Milo just couldn't hold back his curiosity anymore. He decided he wanted to learn the language of humans, so he could talk to the children on Earth.
But how could a star learn to talk? Milo thought and thought, and finally came up with an idea: he would turn everything he learned about the stars into a special language—something he called "the language of the stars"—which is what we now call "astrology."
"Astrology" sounds like a really complicated word, doesn't it? But actually, it's not difficult at all!
You can think of astrology as a subject that studies the relationship between stars and people. Just like in school there are many different classes—math class teaches you to count, Chinese class teaches you to read characters, science class teaches you about nature—astrology is a special class that teaches us about stars, about ourselves, and about the relationship between stars and us.
Milo spent a very long time preparing this course. He invited his smartest star friends—The Old Longevity Star (the guardian of Sagittarius), Athena the Wisdom Star, and Venus the gentlest goddess of love—to help him write this textbook together.
Finally, on one especially bright and sparkling night, Milo decided to pass on the language of the stars to all the children who were curious about the night sky—and that means YOU!
🐻 From Bear to Ladle: Getting to Know Constellations
Okay, since you've come to Starry Sky School, let's start learning the most basic thing first!
What is a constellation?
Imagine you're in a super huge amusement park, and this amusement park is the entire sky! The sky is so vast that you can never reach its edge, and it houses all kinds of stars—some appear alone, while others gather together in groups.
Those groups of stars that gather together have a shared name given by people—they're called "constellations."
Did you know? There are 88 constellations in the entire sky! It's like a super big class with 88 groups, and each group has its own unique name and story.
Let us get to know some of the most interesting constellations!
The Big Dipper: The Big Ladle in the Sky
Have you ever seen a "big ladle" in the night sky? That's the Big Dipper!
The Big Dipper is actually made up of seven stars arranged together, looking just like the big ladle we use for drinking soup. Ancient people thought they looked like a ladle, so they called them "the Big Dipper."
But did you know? In North America, people thought these stars looked like a big pot, so they called it the "Big Pot." In England, some folks thought it looked like a carriage. In China, we call it "Beidou," meaning "the Big Ladle of the North."
The same exact stars, but in different places and different cultures, have completely different names and stories. Isn't that interesting?
Orion: The Great Hunter in the Sky
Now let's meet another super cool constellation—Orion!
On winter nights, if you look carefully at the sky, you'll see three stars neatly lined up in a row, like a cute little bowtie. Surrounding these three stars are four even brighter stars, forming a quadrilateral that looks like a giant human figure.
This is Orion—the great hunter in the sky! In ancient Greek mythology, Orion was the strongest hunter, powerful enough to defeat any wild beast with his bare hands.
And in Chinese mythology? These three neatly arranged stars have a beautiful name—San Xiu San Xing, meaning "the three stars of the San Xiu mansion." The ancients said these three stars symbolize fortune, prosperity, and longevity in the world!
You see? The exact same stars, yet the stories from East and West are completely different! This shows that people from every place, when they look at the stars, see their own stories reflected in them.
The Twelve Zodiac Signs: Which One Do You Belong To?
Now let's talk about a topic you've probably already heard of—zodiac signs!
