> Chapter 1 · Setting Off: From a Crumpled Old Map
> That summer, ten-year-old Alan was trapped in his grandfather's old house by a sudden storm. In the attic, beneath a dusty canvas, he found a rusty wooden chest containing three treasures: a yellowed, crumpled parchment sea chart, a brass compass, and an intricate armillary sphere.
> The map showed Greenland looking larger than China, but his grandfather had told him Greenland was not that big. What was going on?
> How can we truthfully represent the entire Earth on a flat surface? When we force a three-dimensional sphere onto a two-dimensional sheet, we inevitably pay a price. This distortion cost changes not only the visual size of countries, but also quietly shapes how we see the world.
> Modern maps follow the "north-up" convention by historical choice, not by natural necessity. The Earth has no inherent "up"—this is a convention codified by Ptolemy and reinforced by Mercator in the 16th century.
> An interesting counter-example: maps with "south up" were common among Indigenous Australian and South American cultures.
$$S = \frac{d_{\text{map}}}{d_{\text{real}}}$$
(Three Common Expressions):
> Scale tells us the relationship between a distance on the map and the same distance on the ground. It can be expressed numerically, verbally, or graphically.
> Counter-intuitively, "large scale" maps have small denominators and rich detail; "small scale" maps cover wider areas but with less detail.
- **符号 (Symbols)**:圆形 (●) 代表城市,方形 (■) 代表首都,三角形 (▲) 代表山峰;
- **颜色 (Colors)**:蓝色 (blue) 通常代表水体,绿色 (green) 代表低海拔植被,棕色 (brown) 代表高地或山脉,黄色 (yellow) 代表沙漠或干旱区;
> The legend is the dictionary of the map's visual language, telling the reader what each symbol, color, and line style represents.
(Combined Effect)
> All three elements must coexist for a map to be meaningful. They form the foundational "iron triangle" of cartography.

(Why Project?)
> The Earth is a 3D oblate spheroid; paper and screens are 2D planes. The process of converting between them is called "projection."
> Mathematically, a sphere's surface cannot be flattened into a plane without distortion. Every projection involves a trade-off.
(Three Major Projections)
(Mercator Projection)
$$x = R \cdot \lambda$$
$$y = R \cdot \ln\left[\tan\left(\frac{\pi}{4} + \frac{\phi}{2}\right)\right]$$
$$k_{\text{area}}(\phi) = \frac{1}{\cos^2(\phi)}$$
> At 60° latitude, areas appear 4 times larger than they actually are in a Mercator projection.
> The Mercator projection is ideal for navigation because straight lines represent rhumb lines—constant compass bearings.
(Robinson Projection)
$$x = 0.8487 \cdot R \cdot \lambda \cdot (A)$$
$$y = R \cdot (1.3523 \sin(0.8865\phi) - 0.2161 \sin(2 \times 0.8865\phi) + \cdots)$$
> Robinson's projection balances distortion across latitudes—no extreme polar blow-up, no severe edge stretching.
> Robinson projection was used by National Geographic as the standard world map projection from 1988 to 1998.
(Mollweide Projection)
$$\theta + \sin\theta = 2\sin\phi$$
$$x = \frac{2\sqrt{2}}{\pi} \cdot R \cdot \lambda \cdot \cos\theta$$
$$y = \sqrt{2} \cdot R \cdot \sin\theta$$
> Mollweide preserves area but distorts shape—particularly near the map's edges.
> Mollweide is ideal for choropleth maps,
