The Magic Key to Economics
Imagine walking into a large supermarket with your parents. As you push open the heavy glass door, cool air greets you, carrying various food scents—the aroma of fresh bread, the sweetness from the fruit section, and the smell from the meat counter in the distance. Your eyes scan row after row of endless shelves: colorful snacks, neatly arranged drinks, various brands of personal care products, piles of vegetables and fruits... Suddenly, a big question pops into your head: "Why are there so many things here?"
Yes, why? This question sounds simple, but when you really think about it, there's a big secret hidden behind it.

A Little Girl's Curiosity
Let me tell you a real story. This story took place in America, and the main character was a seven-year-old girl named Lina.
One sunny weekend morning, Lina went to the supermarket with her mom. As usual, they pushed a shopping cart through the dense rows of shelves. While helping her mom pick out apples, Lina noticed dozens of different brands of cereal on the shelf—some boxes had cartoon characters, some emphasized "whole grain," and others claimed to have various vitamins added. Lina picked up one box, put it down, picked up another, and finally couldn't help but ask her mom:
"Why are there so many kinds of cereal? Wouldn't one kind be enough?"
Her mom smiled and said, "Because different people like different flavors."
Lina tilted her head, thought about it, and asked again, "But where do these cereals come from? Why are there so many things in the supermarket?"
Her mom was stumped by this question. She thought for a moment and said, "Well... probably because someone makes them, then they get shipped to the supermarket to sell."
Lina wasn't satisfied with this answer. She continued observing everything in the supermarket, and more and more questions filled her mind: Why are some things cheap and others expensive? Why are some items placed in obvious spots while others are in corners? Why are some things available every day while others only appear at certain times?
This story teaches us that curiosity is the first step in exploring the world. And these questions Lina asked are precisely the core questions that economics aims to answer.

Let me explain what economics is. Lina's question seems simple—"why are there so many things"—but to truly answer this question, we need a key. This key is economics.
So, what is economics?
Economics sounds like a fancy term, and many people think it's only about money, stocks, funds, and banks. But in reality, the scope of economics is much broader than you might imagine.
Simply put, economics is the study of how people make choices and how resources are allocated.
There are three key words in this sentence: people, choices, and resources.
(Land and Natural Resources)
Think about resources for a moment. Resources are all the various things we use in life. In economics, we usually divide resources into four categories:
Category 1: Land and Natural Resources
This includes not just the land itself, but also minerals buried underground, timber from forests, fish in the ocean, oxygen in the air, sunlight shining on fields... In short, everything nature provides us can be considered a natural resource.
(Labor)
(Capital)
(Entrepreneurship)
Category 2: Labor
Labor refers to people's work—your parents going to work, you studying at school, farmers growing crops, workers manufacturing products... all of these are labor. The quantity and quality of labor (meaning whether people have sufficient skills and knowledge) directly affects how much society can produce.
Category 3: Capital
Note that "capital" here doesn't mean money, but rather the tools and equipment people make to produce more things. For example, machines in factories, computers, excavators, tractors that farmers use, even a simple hammer—these all belong to capital. Capital is the product of human labor and an important tool for further improving production efficiency.
Category 4: Entrepreneurship
This is the most special type of resource. It refers to someone willing to take risks and combine the first three types of resources to start businesses, produce goods, and provide services. Without entrepreneurship, resources would just be resources and wouldn't become the products we see in supermarkets.
There is always a cost to everything we do, and this cost is called "opportunity cost" in economics—the value of the next best alternative we give up when we make a choice.
Every choice has a cost. If you choose to watch cartoons, the cost is giving up the time you could have used to study or play with friends. If a factory decides to produce cars, the cost might be giving up the opportunity to produce buses or trucks. If a country decides to invest more in education, the cost might be investing less in healthcare or infrastructure.
This is why economics is so important—it helps us understand how to make better choices when resources are limited.

The quantity and quality of labor (meaning whether people have sufficient skills and knowledge) directly affects how much society can produce.
