Welcome to Math World

Have you ever noticed that when you fold socks in pairs, arrange toy cars from biggest to smallest, or count "one, two, three" in line—these seemingly simple actions are actually using mathematical thinking?
Mathematics—that word might sound a bit "fancy" and make you think of equations on a blackboard or calculation problems on exams. But in reality, mathematics begins the moment you open your eyes: you look at the clock and know it's time to get up, you weigh two apples to figure out which is heavier, you think about which shirt to wear first—all of these are mathematics.
In this chapter, we're going to figure out two things together: First, what exactly is mathematics; and second, why mathematics has actually been hiding in your everyday life all along. Ready? Let's begin this journey of mathematical exploration!

What Exactly Is Mathematics?
When asked "what is mathematics," many people would blurt out: "It's addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division!" "It's calculating numbers." "It's a subject in school."
These answers aren't wrong, but they only cover a small part of mathematics. It's like saying "a car is a vehicle with four wheels"—this definition is correct, but it completely misses the essence of cars: they can be race cars, SUVs, RVs, each with different purposes and joys.
Real mathematics is actually a way of thinking that helps us observe the world, understand patterns, and solve problems. It encompasses four core abilities:
First, observation—discovering differences and similarities.
Have you ever noticed how cats and dogs differ? Both have four legs and fur, but cats meow and dogs bark. Mathematical observation trains us to discover: which things are "the same" (can be grouped together) and which are "different" (need to be distinguished). This ability in mathematics is called Classification.
Second, comparison—judging size, quantity, distance.
Which block is taller? Comparing two glasses of juice—which has more? Tomorrow and the day after—which is farther from today? These seemingly ordinary questions actually train us to measure things with mathematical eyes. Comparison is one of the most fundamental math skills, helping us "line things up"—by size, by quantity, by order.
Third, counting—understanding the meaning of quantity.
"I have three candies""There are five people at home""This stack of books will take ten hours to read"—counting isn't just reciting numbers; it represents our understanding of the concept of "how many." One candy, three candies, a hundred candies—the quantities sound vastly different, but the concept of "candy" connects them all. This is mathematics' power of abstraction.
Fourth, finding patterns—predicting what comes next.
"Red, blue, red, blue, red... what color comes next?" If you can answer "blue," congratulations—you're already using one of mathematics' most important abilities: Pattern Recognition. Patterns make our world predictable and learning traceable.
These four abilities—observation, comparison, counting, finding patterns—form the cornerstone of mathematical thinking. They're not isolated but work together like four fingers: you must observe before you can compare; you must compare to count correctly; once you count enough, you can discover patterns.
Many parents might say: "But I was never good at math when I was a kid. Can I really teach my child well?"
The answer is: Of course you can! Because the "mathematics" we're talking about here isn't about doing advanced calculus or solving complex equations—it's about rediscovering those mathematical abilities you use every single day without even realizing it.

The Three Pillars of Early Mathematics
Now that we understand mathematical thinking includes observation, comparison, counting, and finding patterns, what should we focus on during children's early math education?
The answer is: Counting, Sorting/Classifying, and Pattern Recognition. These three areas are like three pillars supporting a mathematical building—they connect, reinforce each other, and together lay a solid foundation for children's future mathematics learning.

Counting: The First Building Block of Math
"One, two, three, four, five..." When children count with their cute little voices, many parents think this is just an adorable developmental milestone. But the importance of counting goes far beyond just "reciting numbers."
Counting is a kind of correspondence: when a child says "one," they're actually corresponding one object with the number "1." This sounds simple, but for children just starting to learn, this is a huge cognitive leap—they have to handle two things simultaneously: remembering the number they're saying and seeing the object in front of them.
Counting involves multiple levels of ability:
Rote Counting: Like singing a song, reciting the number sequence: "one, two, three, four, five..." This mainly tests memory and is the foundation of counting, but not the entirety of counting.
Rational Counting: Corresponding each number with an object: "One, two, three—there are three cars!" This is true counting, requiring children to understand the important concept that "the last number represents the total."
Number Sense: An intuitive understanding of number magnitude and quantity. For example, when seeing a pile of candy, children don't need to count each one—they can roughly tell "there are probably a dozen or so"; or know that 5 is bigger than 3, and 10 is much bigger than 8.
