Have you ever had this experience? On a clear night, gazing up at the countless stars, you suddenly feel a sense of inexplicable peace and vastness? That feeling is as if the entire universe is whispering to you, telling some ancient and mysterious secret. If you've had such an experience, congratulations—you've already planted the seed of connection with astrology.
Astrology, the ancient discipline that studies the relationship between celestial movements and human destiny, has accompanied humanity for thousands of years. From the plains of Mesopotamia to the banks of the Nile in ancient Egypt, from Greek temples to Chinese observatories, humanity has never stopped gazing at and contemplating the stars. Today, we embark on a wonderful journey, starting from the most fundamental concepts and gradually uncovering the mysteries of constellations and destiny.
Gazing at the Starry Sky: Humanity's Ancient Dialogue with the Universe
Let's turn back the clock to over ten thousand years ago. Our human ancestors still lived in caves, but they shared a common habit—looking up at the sky. The sun during the day provided warmth and light, while the moon and stars at night guided their direction and perhaps even foretold mysterious forces. This attention to the sky was no accident; it was an innate instinct of humans as highly intelligent beings.
Why are humans so fascinated with observing the starry sky? This question seems simple but touches upon the deepest codes of human civilization. First, the sky is an extremely regular reference system. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west daily, the moon changes phase periodically, and stars appear in specific positions during fixed seasons. This high degree of regularity was precious in the chaotic natural world, providing humanity with the basis for measuring time, determining direction, and predicting seasons. In other words, without observing the starry sky, humans could never have developed agricultural civilization, let alone cities and nations later on.

Secondly, the sky inspired humanity's most primitive imagination. When our ancestors lay on the grass gazing at the Milky Way, they saw not just points of light but a mythological world filled with gods, heroes, and animals. Orion in Greek mythology is a great hunter, while in ancient China it was known as "Shen Xiu" (the Three Stars), one of the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions. Ursa Major in Native American stories is a bear chased to the sky, while in China, it is the familiar "Big Dipper" area. This ability to weave stars into stories is an important marker distinguishing humans from other animals, and it is also the cultural soil where astrology was born.
The Light of Civilization Illuminates the Stars
When discussing the origins of astrology, we must mention several ancient civilizations. They were like different sparks of human wisdom that ultimately merged into the astrological systems we know today.
Mesopotamia: The Cradle of Astrology
If we say Mesopotamia is the birthplace of astrology, probably no one would object. This land between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers (roughly corresponding to modern-day Iraq) gave birth to humanity's first writing, the first legal codes, and also the earliest astrology.
Around 2000 BCE, the Sumerians living in southern Mesopotamia began systematically observing the sky. They noticed that there seemed to be some connection between the appearance of certain celestial bodies and events on the ground. For example, when Mars became unusually bright, wars or conflicts often occurred on earth; when Venus appeared on the eastern horizon, it foretold good luck and abundant harvests. Although these connections in today's view are more coincidences than causation, it was this observation and association that opened the prelude to astrology.
During the ancient Babylonian period (approximately 1800-539 BCE), astrology had developed into a fairly complex system. The Babylonian priests—who were both clergymen and astronomers—recorded precise trajectories of the sun, moon, and planets, connecting these celestial bodies with deities. Each celestial body corresponded to a deity, and the actions of the deities were believed to affect human fortune and misfortune.
One of the Babylonians' most important contributions was creating the prototype of the twelve signs of the zodiac. They noticed that the sun seems to travel along a fixed path during the year, which was called the "ecliptic." They divided this path into twelve regions, each with its unique name and symbolism. Around 500 BCE, most of the constellation names used in modern astrology had been basically established, including Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
Ancient Egypt: Eternal Worship of the Sky
The ancient Egyptians discovered a precise correlation between the flooding of the Nile and the rising of Sirius, leading them to deeply realize that some mysterious resonance exists between the sky and the human world. When Sirius first appeared on the eastern horizon before dawn, the flooding of the Nile followed, bringing fertile silt to the farmland. The ancient Egyptians called Sirius "Sopdet," representing the goddess of rebirth and renewal.
The ancient Egyptians' worship of the sky reached near obsession. The construction of the pyramids contained profound astronomical significance—the internal passages of the Great Pyramid of Giza precisely pointed to certain important stars, while the pyramid's shape symbolized the rays of
