Lesson 1: Understanding Our Body's Tiny Universe
Now, imagine this: the morning sun streams through your window as you wake up from a deep sleep. Have you ever wondered what magical things are happening inside your body right now? Your heart is beating rhythmically, blood is rushing through your vessels, your lungs are breathing in oxygen, and your brain—the amazing command center—is directing all of this to happen in perfect harmony. Did you know? In just the few seconds it takes you to read this sentence, your body has already created millions of new cells to replace the old ones. The human body—this marvelous city made of trillions of tiny living units—is running, working, and protecting itself every single moment.
This is where our exploration begins—the human body, this exquisitely crafted "tiny universe." In this universe, every cell is like a little star. They come together to form tissues like constellations, tissues form organs like planets, and organs combine into systems like solar systems, ultimately creating the complete human body. Let's embark on this journey together and uncover the mysteries of this "tiny universe"—how it operates and how it keeps itself running.
The Building Blocks of the Body: Understanding Cells
If we compare the human body to a city, then cells are the most basic units of this city—like the bricks used to build it. A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. Nearly all living organisms on Earth are composed of cells. The English word "Cell" comes from Latin, originally meaning "small room." This is because early scientists, when observing cork under a microscope, noticed many structures that looked like tiny rooms, so they named them cells.
The Structure of a Cell: A Miniature Factory
Each cell is a wonderfully crafted miniature factory. Although they're too small to see with the naked eye—most cells are only 10 to 100 micrometers in size and require a microscope to observe—their work efficiency is astonishing. Let's get to know the different "departments" of this "miniature factory."
The Nucleus—the central control room of this factory. The nucleus is like the headquarters of a factory, containing the cell's "design blueprint," known as DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is a long-chain molecule that carries all the instructions needed to build and run our bodies. Did you know? If you connected all the DNA in one person's cells end to end, it could travel back and forth between Earth and the Sun hundreds of times! The genes (Gene) on the DNA are like detailed instruction manuals, telling the cell when to do what—for example, when to divide and when to make specific proteins.
Cytoplasm—the workshop of the factory. The area outside the nucleus is filled with a gel-like substance where the cell carries out various chemical reactions and manufacturing processes. Within the cytoplasm, there are many structures called organelles (Organelle), which are like "departments," each with its own unique function.
Mitochondria—the power plant of this factory. Mitochondria are called the "energy factories of cells." Through a process called cellular respiration (Cellular Respiration), they convert the food we eat into ATP (adenosine triphosphate)—the energy "currency" that cells can use. Imagine mitochondria as generators that never stop working, providing electricity for all the cell's operations. Mitochondria are very special because they have their own DNA, different from the DNA in the nucleus. Scientists believe that a very long time ago, mitochondria might have been independent bacteria that were later "swallowed" by larger cells, settling inside them and becoming part of the cell. This interesting theory is called the Endosymbiont Theory (Endosymbiont Theory).
Ribosomes—the production lines of the factory. These tiny structures are the cell's "protein-making machines." Following instructions from DNA, they assemble various proteins from amino acids (the building blocks of proteins). Proteins are one of the most important molecules in the body, involved in almost all physiological activities—from muscle contraction to immune defense, from digesting food to transmitting signals.
The Cell Membrane—the walls and gates of the factory. The cell membrane wraps around the entire cell. It not only provides protection but also controls what substances can enter and exit the cell. The cell membrane is like an intelligent security system, only allowing specific substances to pass through—nutrients can enter the cell, and waste can exit. This selective passing ability is called selective permeability (Selectively Permeable).

Cell Division: The Continuation of Life
Cells in our bodies are not static—they constantly divide and renew themselves. Cell division (Cell Division) is the process where one cell becomes two, two become four, four become eight, and so on. This process is essential for our growth, development, and tissue repair.
When you were a baby, your body was small and needed more cells to form your body, so cell division happened quickly. As you grew older, the pace of cell division slowed down but continued—helping you grow taller, making your hair and nails longer, and repairing your injured skin.
The most amazing part is that cell division has a precise control system. The DNA in the nucleus is completely copied before division, so each new cell gets a complete copy of genetic information. This process is called mitosis (Mitosis). During mitosis, the cell first copies its DNA, then evenly distributes the copied DNA to two new cells, ensuring each
