Chapter 1: The Chatty Multitasking Castle
Lily pushed open the oak door carved with stars and absolutely did not expect to meet a talking castle—let alone one that could handle ten million things at once. Sunlight in the deep forest filtered through the ancient stone walls, illuminating miracles happening simultaneously in the courtyard: to the east, a group of little elves stood on tiptoes dusting crystal chandeliers; to the south, several hands pruned shrubs into different shapes; to the north, ten large pots boiled simultaneously in the kitchen, emitting entirely different aromas. Lily's mouth fell open. By the time she counted the seventh concurrent activity, her head began to spin—how was this possible? If there was only one cat, it couldn't chase mice, bask in the sun, and sleep all at once; if there was only one mouth, it couldn't sing, eat, and tell stories simultaneously. Yet this castle was clearly doing a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand things at the same time!
Just as Lily stood stunned, an elderly man in a crisp tailcoat, leaning on a silver cane, stepped out from behind the porch. His silver hair was combed neatly, his eyes behind glasses sparkled with wisdom, and a gentle smile played on his lips. "Welcome to Concurrency Castle, dear visitor," his voice was as steady as an old clock. "I am the steward here. You may call me Mr. Concurrency."
"Con...currency?" Lily repeated the unfamiliar word, feeling it roll over her tongue like a string of small pebbles.
"Yes," Mr. Concurrency nodded, his silver cane tapping lightly on the ground. "It means 'happening together.' However, dear, I must clarify a common misconception: the castle does not magically split one thing into ten million pieces in the same instant. That wouldn't be magic; that would be chaos—like trying to sing two different songs at once, which only produces noise."
He gestured for Lily to follow and walked toward the east corridor. There, six elves stood on six ladders dusting six different lamps, but their movements were perfectly synchronized, like a well-trained orchestra.
"Watch here," Mr. Concurrency said softly. "Each elf is responsible for only one lamp. They are not 'simultaneously' dusting the same lamp—that would bump heads. They are 'concurrently' dusting different lamps. This is the first secret of concurrency: Division of Labor. Each does only one thing, but when everyone does their part together, the overall speed increases dramatically."
Lily nodded uncertainly, her eyes fixed on one elf—after finishing his lamp, he lightly hopped over to help the adjacent elf fold his rag, while that elf turned to fetch new cleaner. As they exchanged actions, not a word was spoken, yet it was like a carefully choreographed dance.
"They are also collaborating," Mr. Concurrency read her confusion. "When one person is temporarily free, they naturally take over part of someone else's work. It's not pre-arranged; it's dynamic adjustment—just like when your classmates move desks together, the taller ones naturally take on more height, and the stronger ones voluntarily carry more. Every 'worker' in the castle knows how to observe and coordinate."
They walked through the corridor to a crossroads. To the left came the clanging of hammering, to the right the aroma of baking cookies, and straight ahead the sound of water and singing. Lily suddenly realized: these sounds weren't a messy noise; they were clearly distinguishable independent melodies, like different sections of a symphony harmoniously blending.
"Each task has its own 'space' and 'time'," Mr. Concurrency explained. "The cake elf is in the kitchen, the decoration elf in the living room, the music elf in the music room—they are physically separated to avoid interfering with each other. That is Isolation. At the same time, they synchronize progress through the castle's 'heartbeat'—an invisible metronome. That is Coordination. Division of labor, collaboration, isolation, coordination—these are the four pillars of concurrency."
Lily listened intently, arriving unconsciously at the castle's central hall. It was like a command center, with a huge crystal ball floating in the air, twinkling with countless points of light, each representing an ongoing task. Mr. Concurrency tapped his cane lightly, and the crystal ball unfolded into a dynamic map: in the kitchen, the cake elf was mixing batter; in the living room, the decoration elf hung balloons; in the garden, the invitation elf slipped letters into mailboxes; in the library, the game elf searched for board game rules.
"Watch," said Mr. Concurrency, "some tasks require shared resources, like the oven. There is only one oven, but both the cake elf and the cookie elf want to use it. What to do?"
On the crystal ball, two elves approached the oven, both reaching for the start button. Suddenly, a golden hourglass descended from the ceiling, hovering above the oven. Sand began to flow inside, and Mr. Concurrency's voice rang out: "This is Scheduling. When resources are limited, we need rules to decide who goes first. Here we use time-slice round-robin: the cake elf uses it first for 15 minutes, then the cookie elf for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the elf who is waiting does other tasks that don't need the oven—like the cake elf preparing frosting while waiting."
Lily watched in amazement as the cake elf indeed turned to grab a frosting can, while the cookie elf began preheating the oven. No arguments, no waiting—time was used perfectly.
"That is the wisdom of Context Switch," Mr. Concurrency smiled. "When an elf pauses work to wait for a resource, he shouldn't just stand there. He saves his current state (like 'batter has been mixed to step two'), then does another independent task. When the resource becomes available, he restores the state and continues. This way, not a single second is wasted."
Lily's eyes lit up: "So... it's not magic, it's clever arrangement?"
"Exactly!" Mr. Concurrency's cane pointed to
