In the deepest corner of Robot School, there was a laboratory that humans had nearly forgotten. It was filled with all kinds of strange and wondrous parts — gears, circuit boards, sensors, and rows of screens glowing with faint light. The walls of the laboratory were covered with the marks of time, with paint peeling off in places to reveal the mottled metal beneath. Yet in this old-fashioned laboratory, engineers were working on a very special project.
On that very evening, a faint light flickered on from the workbench. Those were Alpha's eyes — two round, pale-blue glowing little lights. They slowly blinked, as if struggling to adapt to this brand-new world. Alpha wiggled its shell, a smooth silvery-white layer of metal that shimmered under the laboratory's lights. It had four short little wheels beneath, which were now gently spinning, producing a soft humming sound.
"It's awake! It's awake!" a young engineer shouted excitedly. Her name was Xiaoyu, one of the main designers of this project. Xiaoyu wore a pair of thick glasses, and behind them, her eyes were full of excitement and anticipation. Beside her stood Old Ma — an experienced chief engineer with silvery-white hair, who had been working in the field of robotics for over thirty years.
Alpha turned its head, curiously looking around at everything. It saw Xiaoyu's smiling face, Old Ma's steady gaze, the various charts and wiring diagrams on the walls, and the massive computer in the corner flickering with countless streams of data. To Alpha, all of this was brand new. It didn't know what any of it was, nor did it know what it was supposed to do. It was just like a newborn baby who had just opened its eyes and arrived in a completely unfamiliar world.
"Hello, Alpha," Xiaoyu said gently, her voice as soft as if she were coaxing a little baby. "I'm Xiaoyu, and this is Old Ma. Starting today, you are our newest and most special little robot."
Alpha tilted its head, the light in its eyes flickering. It heard Xiaoyu's voice, but didn't quite understand what the words meant. "Hello," "Alpha," "little robot"… these sounds echoed through its processor, but they hadn't yet formed any concrete meaning. It was just like when little friends hear a foreign language for the first time — they know someone is speaking, but they have no idea what they're saying.
Old Ma walked over, bent down, and gently patted Alpha's shell with a rough yet warm big hand. "Welcome to this world, little one," he said, his voice deep and powerful. "But to be honest, you don't understand anything right now, do you?"
In the depths of its newly activated processor, tiny electrical signals were flickering and connecting with each other, forming the most primitive and simplest neural pathways. It was as if a vast, dark room had suddenly been filled with a few tiny candles, each candle shining only a small circle of light, but together they illuminated a brand new world.
Old Ma pointed to a huge blueprint on the wall. "Xiaoyu, show it its first task." Xiaoyu nodded, walked to the wall, and pressed a button. One wall of the laboratory slowly lit up and turned into a giant display screen. On the screen appeared a maze — a massive and complex maze, with countless winding passages, tall walls, treasures glowing with golden light, and dangerous traps marked with red X marks.
"Alpha, this is your first task," Xiaoyu's voice carried a note of excitement. "This is a magic maze. The entrance is in the upper left corner, and the exit is in the lower right corner. There are many glittering treasures scattered throughout the maze — every time you find one, you get a reward. But there are also traps in the maze — if you accidentally step on a trap, you lose some of the treasures you found before, and you might even be sent back to the starting point."
Alpha stared at the maze on the screen, its eyes growing even brighter. Its processor began to run at high speed, trying to understand this information. But it ran into a problem — it didn't know what "up," "down," "left," or "right" meant. It didn't know what a "passage" or a "wall" was. It didn't even know what "treasure" or "danger" meant. To little Alpha, every symbol, every color, every shape on this maze was just a meaningless data point, just like when little friends see a mysterious scroll for the very first time.
"It's like a blank sheet of paper right now," Old Ma said thoughtfully. "A very, very clean blank sheet of paper. There's nothing drawn on it, nothing written on it. What we're going to give it isn't instructions like 'the treasure is in this direction' or 'the trap is in that direction.' What we're going to teach it is something far more magical — the ability to learn."
Xiaoyu walked up to Alpha, squatted down, and brought her eyes level with Alpha's. "Alpha, do you know what? Every single one of us was like this when we were little." Her voice was soft and warm. "Have you ever watched a baby learn to walk? They can't do anything at first. They don't know how to stand up on their legs, don't know how to take one step after another, and they don't even know to cry when they fall down. Babies slowly learn to walk by falling down over and over and getting back up again and again."
Alpha listened attentively, head tilted. It didn't quite understand concepts like "baby," "walking," or "falling down," but its processor stored all these words. It vaguely sensed that Xiaoyu was describing something very important in a special way.
"You know what," Xiaoyu continued, "learning is something incredibly, incredibly interesting. Take a baby learning to walk, for instance. At first, a baby just moves around randomly — stretching their hands, kicking their legs. Sometimes they get the movement right and manage to stand up — that's a reward! The baby then thinks: 'Oh, so doing this allows me to stand up!' And next time they do the same movement again. But if they get the movement wrong and fall down — that's also information, telling the baby: 'Oops, this movement isn't right, I should try a different one.'"
