Chapter 1: Where Is Shanghai? The City's Geographic Location and Early Forms
Imagine that you are on a spaceship, slowly moving away from Earth. When you reach a few hundred kilometers above the ground, you see a blue planet—our Earth. As you continue to descend, you can see the eastern coastline of China, with its long stretches of coast, golden beaches, and countless city lights twinkling below. In the central part of this coastline, a massive river flows into the sea. This river is called the Yangtze River, the longest river in Asia. And near where the Yangtze River meets the East China Sea, there is a magical city that sits both by the river and faces the sea—this is the protagonist we are going to meet today—Shanghai.

1. Looking at China from Space: Finding the Yangtze River Mouth
Let's travel back in time to a very, very long time ago. In ancient times, China's land did not have so many cities—there were only dense forests, vast plains, and raging seas. Back then, the Yangtze River was not what it is today; its water volume fluctuated greatly, and its channel kept changing. Archaeologists tell us that about seven thousand years ago, the area where Shanghai now stands was still an expanse of ocean, with only a few hills and sandbars protruding above the water.
Scientists, by studying sediments on the seabed, have discovered that between six thousand and ten thousand years ago, the sea level was much higher than it is today. Imagine that the coastline back then might have extended all the way to where Suzhou and Wuxi are now. As time passed, the seawater slowly receded, and the land gradually emerged. The Shanghai area was "born" in this way, piece by piece, from the seabed. Scientists call this type of land an "alluvial plain"—meaning a plain formed by the accumulation of sand and silt carried by rivers.
This type of land has a characteristic: it is extremely flat, with almost no ups and downs. Standing on such land and looking in all directions, you might feel that the sky and the earth seem to merge together. In ancient times, such places were not suitable for human habitation because when typhoons and heavy rains came every summer, the entire area would be flooded. Back then, the early inhabitants of the Shanghai area could only build houses on some higher ground—these are the small hills we can still see today, such as Sheshan in Songjiang District.
If you have the opportunity to fly over Shanghai on a plane, you will notice an interesting phenomenon: in the western part of Shanghai, there are some slightly raised hills, but the further east you go, the flatter the terrain becomes, finally extending all the way to the seashore. This is the basic topographical feature of Shanghai: higher in the west and lower in the east, gradually transitioning from hilly areas in the west to plains in the east, finally disappearing into the vast waters.
Now, let's focus our attention on the location of the Yangtze River mouth. The Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and the third longest river in the world, stretching approximately 6,300 kilometers. It originates from the Tanggula Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, rushing eastward with great momentum, passing through many provinces, and finally emptying into the East China Sea in the north of Shanghai. When you look down at this area from space, you can see the Yangtze River like a huge silver ribbon, winding its way from China's interior, and then suddenly widening at its mouth, forming a huge bay shaped like a trumpet—this is the famous Yangtze River Estuary.
The Yangtze River Estuary is a very special place. Looking at the map, you can see that near the mouth, the Yangtze River is divided into two branches by Chongming Island: the North Branch and the South Branch. Chongming Island itself was formed by the accumulation of silt carried by the Yangtze River. It is China's third largest island and one of the world's largest fluvial islands. Chongming Island has an area of approximately 1,300 square kilometers, larger than many cities. This island is still growing larger every year because the massive amounts of silt carried by the Yangtze River continue to accumulate around the island.
Satellite images taken from space show that the color of the Yangtze River Estuary changes with the seasons: during the summer rainy season, the river carries huge amounts of silt into the ocean, and the seawater turns a murky yellow; while in winter, when the river water is clearer, the seawater presents a deep blue color. This color change allows us to clearly see how the Yangtze River water affects the East China Sea—the river water extends hundreds of kilometers outward on the sea surface, forming a light yellow water mass, which scientists call the "Yangtze River Plume."

2. The Meeting of River and Sea: The Geographic Code in Shanghai's Name
Now, let's solve an interesting puzzle: How did the name Shanghai come about? Why is Shanghai called "the meeting point of river and sea"?
First, let's understand the term "the meeting of river and sea." In ancient China, "jiang" (江) specifically referred to the Yangtze River, "hai" (海) referred to the East China Sea, and "hui" (汇) meant meeting or gathering. So "jiang hai zhi hui" means the place where the Yangtze River meets the East China Sea. Looking at the map of China, you will find that Shanghai is恰好 located on this stretch of coastline between the Yangtze River mouth and Hangzhou Bay. The Yangtze River rushes from the west, carrying water from most of China's land, and here it pours into the sea; while the tides of the East China Sea surge from the east, constantly pounding Shanghai's coastline day and night. Here, one river and one sea meet, forming a unique geographical landscape.
Then, where did the name "Shanghai" come from? This story goes back a very long time. During the Song Dynasty, the area on both sides of the Huangpu River in present-day Shanghai still belonged to two different counties: Puxi belonged to Huating County (later Shanghai County), while Pudong belonged to Haiyan County. At that time, the most prosperous area was not along the Huangpu River, but on both sides of the Wusong River (now
