Life in the Universe: A Millennia-Old Question
When you gaze at the summer night sky and see the Summer Triangle formed by Deneb, Vega, and Altair, have you ever had a fleeting trance: among those twinkling light spots, could there be a child of another civilization also looking toward Earth with a telescope? This question spans thousands of years, and has never stopped being asked since humans first looked up at the starry sky. Whether it is the Chinese myth of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl separated by the Milky Way, the conjecture of ancient Greek philosophers that "there are countless worlds with countless forms of life", or the "canals" of Mars seen through telescopes by modern astronomers, humanity's quest for "whether life exists in the universe" runs through the entire course of human civilization. Astrobiology is exactly this interdisciplinary discipline that attempts to answer this ultimate question - it combines the perspectives of astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology and even computer science to re-examine "life" from the scale of the universe.
In ancient Chinese classics, there have long been romantic imaginations of cosmic life. Qu Yuan wrote in "Heavenly Questions": "How are the sun and moon suspended? How are the stars arranged?" Not only does he question the laws of celestial motion, but he also implies curiosity about the existence of other beings among the stars. The philosophical view in "Zhuangzi · Discussion on Making All Things Equal" that "heaven and earth are born with me, and all things are one with me" regards human life as part of the entire cosmic life system. Song Dynasty scientist Shen Kuo detailed the fall of meteorites in "Dream Pool Essays", clearly pointing out that "meteorites are the essence of stars", believing that the stars in the sky and the matter on Earth have the same origin, and may even give birth to life - this simple idea of "cosmic homology" echoes the modern astrobiological hypothesis that "life is a universal phenomenon in the universe" across thousands of years. This quest for stellar life is not unique to China: cuneiform tablets from ancient Babylon record that "the structure of the heavenly world is the same as that of the earthly world, and there is also life in the heavenly world"; the ancient Egyptian "Book of the Dead" believes that stars are the dwellings of gods, and the life forms of gods are different from those on earth.

Aristotle indeed leaned more toward the view that "Earth is the only home for life in the universe": he believed the universe was finite, with Earth at its center, and that celestial bodies and Earth were made of completely different substances—celestial bodies were composed of perfect "aether", eternal and unchanging, while Earth was made of four elements: earth, water, air, and fire, which would decay and change. Only Earth had the conditions to nurture life. His views were later integrated into the geocentric system by Ptolemy, and adopted as official doctrine by the Christian Church in the Middle Ages: since God created humans in his own image, Earth must be the only home for life in the universe, and other celestial bodies were just "lamps" for humans to watch. This idea dominated Western civilization for nearly 2000 years, until 1600, when the Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake in Rome's Campo de' Fiori for publicly supporting the idea that "the universe is infinite, and there are countless habitable worlds with life", making later generations realize how great a price this conjecture required at the time.
While ancient Chinese conjectures about cosmic life were not shackled by religion, they also remained at the level of philosophy and imagination for a long time. It was not until Shen Kuo's "Dream Pool Essays" in the Song Dynasty that meteorites were first linked to cosmic life: Shen Kuo detailed the fall of a meteorite in Changzhou in 1064, which was "shaped like a fist, colored like iron", and clearly pointed out that "this object is the essence of stars", believing that the stars in the sky and the matter on Earth have the same origin, and stars may also have life. This simple idea of "cosmic homology" surprisingly echoes the core hypothesis of modern astrobiology that "life is a universal phenomenon in the universe", spanning nearly a thousand years.
The turning point of cognition came in the 16th century: in 1543, Copernicus' "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium" was published, and the heliocentric theory officially broke the shackles of "Earth is the center of the universe", proving that Earth is just an ordinary planet orbiting the Sun, and there are other Earth-like planets in the solar system. In 1609, Galileo used a self-made telescope to observe the sky, and for the first time saw that the surface of the moon was covered with craters and mountains, which was by no means the "perfect aether sphere" described by Aristotle; he also discovered four satellites of Jupiter (later called Galilean satellites), proving that not all celestial bodies orbit the Earth. These observations directly broke the cognition that "celestial bodies are perfect and only Earth can nurture life", and for the first time gave the conjecture that "there is other life in the universe" an observational basis.
The 19th century was a century of "Mars fever": in 1877, Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli used a telescope to observe Mars and saw thin dark lines on its surface. He called them "canali" in Italian, which originally meant "waterways, channels", but when translated into English, it became "canals", implying artificially built irrigation projects. This translation error instantly detonated public imagination: American astronomer Percival Lowell established a special Mars observatory in Arizona, observed Mars continuously for more than ten years, drew hundreds of diagrams of
