Introduction: What Do Eastern and Western Traditions Say When We Talk About Destiny?
---
Have you ever experienced this: on a late night, you casually look up at the starry sky and suddenly feel a strange sensation—as if those distant stars are watching over everyone on Earth, and you, my friend, are also being attended to by some invisible force. This feeling is ancient; it is not a modern exclusive but an old echo inscribed in the depths of human collective memory.
Alternatively, you might have had a completely different experience: you walk into an ancient temple or church, surrounded by exquisite murals and sculptures. The murals depict celestial deities, the movement of constellations, the gears of destiny—ancestors from East and West, each in their own way, tried to answer the same question: Is our life already arranged by some higher power?
This question is the core we will discuss today: Destiny.

Part 1: Humanity's Eternal Question About Destiny
When we talk about destiny, what exactly are we talking about? This question seems simple but touches on the most fundamental confusion of human existence. Since the moment human civilization was born, we have been constantly asking: Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? The ultimate answer to these three questions often points in the same direction—destiny.
1.1: Civilizations Born Under the Starry Sky
Let us turn back the clock to around 3000 BCE on the Mesopotamian plain. At that time, humans had just learned to write, and one of the earliest things recorded was observations of the sky and stars. In the city-states of Mesopotamia, the most important daily work of the priests was to look up at the sky, record the trajectories of the stars, and divine the will of the gods. They believed there was some mysterious connection between the stars in the heavens and mortals on earth; the movement of every planet might foretell the rise and fall of kings, the survival of kingdoms, even the destiny of the entire world.
At the same time, on the other side of the Earth—in the Yellow River and Yangtze River valleys—ancestors of Chinese civilization were also conducting similar observations and reflections. They noticed that there was an eternally rotating celestial north pole in the sky, around which all the stars revolved. This fixed point was called "Taiyi" or "Ziwei Star" by the ancients, and it became the symbol of the emperor—the pattern of the "Ziwei Star" hung directly above the emperor's throne because the emperor was considered the representative of the Heavenly Emperor on earth, and the Heavenly Emperor dwelt above the North Star.
This is a cross-temporal echo. Babylonian priests looked at Jupiter's trajectory to deduce the fate of the empire; Chinese historians observed celestial phenomena at night to record the fortunes of emperors. Their methods differed, their symbolic systems were different, but they looked at the same starry sky and asked the same question.
1.2: The Many Faces of Views on Destiny
In the long scroll of human history, the concept of "destiny" presents an extremely rich landscape. Different civilizations, different eras, and different cultural backgrounds have all shaped distinctive views of destiny.
Views of destiny in the Western tradition have gone through several important stages. In ancient Greece, people generally believed in the existence of the Three Fates (Moirai)—Clotho, who spun the thread of life; Lachesis, who measured its length; and Atropos, who cut it. These three sisters symbolized three stages of life: birth, continuation, and end; no one could escape their decisions. In Greek tragedies, we repeatedly see heroes struggling against fate—Oedipus wanted to escape the oracle but ultimately walked step by step into the depths of the prophecy; Prometheus stole fire from heaven but was chained to the Caucasus Mountains to endure eternal punishment. The Greek view of destiny was full of tragic color: although humans could struggle, the final outcome was often determined by higher powers.
In the Roman era, the concept of destiny became closely tied to the goddess "Fortuna." Fortuna held the wheel of destiny, her eyes blindfolded, symbolizing the blindness and unpredictability of fate. Romans believed this goddess could turn a poor person into a wealthy one in an instant, or cast an emperor into the abyss. Fortune and misfortune were often decided in the very instant she turned her wheel. This concept profoundly influenced Western cultural understanding of opportunity, luck, and uncontrollable factors.
Views of destiny in Eastern traditions present a different scene. The Eastern philosophy of destiny, represented by China, emphasizes the holistic concept of "unity of heaven and humanity." In this system, destiny is not controlled by an independent deity but is the embodiment of the universal operating laws in the individual. The Five Elements theory holds that the five basic elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water—maintain cosmic balance through constant motion and change, and human destiny also follows the same patterns. The Sixty-year Cycle of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches is an exquisite correspondence of time and space; the Eight Trigrams and Sixty-four Hexagrams are symbolic expressions of cosmic change patterns. Chinese fortune-tellers are not fighting against an autocratic god but interpreting the language of the universe—they believe that by observing celestial phenomena, time, and an individual's birth information, one can understand the potential direction of that person's life trajectory.
These two traditions—the tragic view of destiny in the West and the regularistic view of destiny in the East—constitute the two basic paradigms of human contemplation on destiny. The differences between them precisely reflect the fundamental divergence in the underlying logic of Eastern and Western cultures. The collision and blending of these two traditions is precisely the core theme of this book.
