Little Ling's Magical Journey: Welcome to the Kingdom of Emotions
Morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, landing softly on Little Ling's long eyelashes. Today was a special day—Little Ling was about to begin an unprecedented adventure.
"Little Ling! Wake up!" A gentle voice echoed in her ear.
Little Ling opened her eyes to find herself standing in a meadow of vibrant colors. The sky was a soft lavender purple, and the grass felt as soft as stepping on clouds. In the distance stood a glittering crystal castle, its towers reaching high into the clouds.
"Who are you?" Little Ling asked curiously.
"I'm your new friend, called 'Emotion Xiao Xu.' Welcome to the Kingdom of Emotions!" the voice replied cheerfully.
Little Ling blinked. She had heard of many kingdoms—the Candy Kingdom, the Toy Kingdom, but never the Kingdom of Emotions.
"The Kingdom of Emotions? What's that place?" Little Ling asked.
Emotion Xiao Xu smiled and explained: "In this kingdom live four very important little residents. Every single second, you can feel their presence—when you get ice cream, you feel happy; when you lose your favorite toy, you feel sad; when your brother teases you, you feel angry; when you're alone in the dark, you feel scared. These four feelings are the friends we're going to meet today."
Little Ling nodded thoughtfully. She remembered what happened yesterday—her mom bought her a beautiful new dress, and she jumped for joy; later at the park, her little bear toy accidentally fell into the pond, and she felt sad for a long time; then a neighbor's big dog barked at her, and she was so scared she hid behind her mom.
"So these are all emotions!" Little Ling exclaimed, suddenly understanding.
"That's right!" Emotion Xiao Xu said excitedly. "Emotions are like magical postmen, delivering letters to your brain every moment. Some letters bring good news, some bring not-so-good news, but every letter is very important—because they all tell you something about yourself."
Little Ling's adventure officially began. Following Emotion Xiao Xu, she walked step by step into the magical crystal castle. In the grand hall, four doors of different colors were waiting for her—
A golden-yellow door, radiating warm light; A blue door, flowing with water-like tranquility; A red door, conveying urgent and powerful energy; A gray door, shrouded in a thin layer of mist.
"Behind each door lives a little emotion resident," Emotion Xiao Xu said mysteriously, winking. "Which one would you like to meet first?"

What Are Emotions? Messengers from Our Inner World
In the Kingdom of Emotions, Little Ling learned an important truth: emotions are natural responses from our inner world to external events and physical states. Just as weather changes with seasons, our emotions fluctuate with what happens around us.
Scientific Definition of Emotions: The Nature of Emotions from a Psychological Perspective
In developmental psychology, emotion is defined as a complex psychological and physiological response pattern involving three core components: subjective experience, overt behavior, and physiological arousal (Ekman, 1992; Izard, 2007). This means when an emotion occurs, you simultaneously experience three types of changes:
First, Subjective Experience—This is what you feel deep inside. You might say "I feel very happy" or "I feel very scared." This awareness of your inner feelings is the subjective experience component of emotions.
Second, Overt Behavior—These are the physical expressions of emotions. When happy, we smile; when sad, we cry; when angry, we stomp our feet; when scared, we shiver. These observable bodily reactions are the overt behavior component of emotions.
Third, Physiological Arousal—This is the automatic response inside your body. When emotions arise, your heartbeat might quicken, breathing might accelerate, and palms might become sweaty. These involuntary bodily changes are the physiological arousal component of emotions.
For preschool children aged 3-6, these three components often appear simultaneously, though their development varies. Research shows that children begin using simple language to express their emotional feelings around age 2, and by ages 4-5, they can already understand and name basic emotional states (Sinoff & Werner, 2019).
The Difference Between Emotion and Feeling: Why Don't We Say "Gan Qing"?
Many children might confuse the words "情绪" (emotion) and "感情" (feeling). In Chinese, although they look similar, in psychology they have clear distinctions.
Emotion (情绪) usually comes quickly and goes quickly, like clouds in the sky, drifting and changing. You might suddenly get angry because of something small, but forget about it a while later; you might feel happy seeing a cute puppy, but after playing for a while, this happiness gradually settles down.
Feeling (感情) is more enduring and stable. It's a deep emotional connection formed with a person or thing after spending time together. For example, your dependence on mom is a feeling, your affection for your kindergarten teacher is a feeling, and your concern for your pet turtle at home is also a feeling.
In emotional intelligence cultivation, we mainly focus on how to recognize, understand, and manage those coming-and-going "emotions," because changes in these emotions directly affect our daily mood and interpersonal interactions.
The Function of Emotions: Why Do We Have Emotions?
Perhaps some children might ask: "If emotions sometimes make me sad, scared, or angry, why do we have emotions at all?" This is an excellent question.
Although emotions sometimes bring us uncomfortable feelings, they play an extremely important role in human evolution and individual development. According to evolutionary psychology theory, emotions are an ancient surviv
